Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
Hi, I found that Power Manager doesn't work anymore in Windows 10 and that it is included in something called "Lenovo Settings" that has to be downloaded from Microsoft Shop, free.
I registered on Microsoft shop with a new account and tried to get/download it... No way. I come to the page where I can request Lenovo Settings, clock on Free button, they ask for my account, I click on it... black window for a while and then... again the "request for free window"
Any idea of help? Is there any possibility of having the old Windows 7 Power Manager working on Windows 10? I tried to execute the installation setuo program with Windows 7 compatibility, but it says cannot be executed in Windows 10, I found the old PowerUI.exe in Driver/Vista/Pwmgt directory, tried to execute it in Windows 7 compatibility... No error, but also no answer
Thanks.
Javier

Re: Power Manager Fix for Windows 10 on T500
Hi
I found the following procedure online which solved my problem with Power Mananger.
Lenovo Power Manager doesn't work because the Setup file is blocked.
The blocking mechanism is a so-called hard block and is applied by the Program Compatibility Assistant.
The following workaround fixed it for me:
Install the Windows 10 Assessment and Deployment Kit ( adksetup for Windows 10) from https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/window ... x#adkwin10 (when you install Windows ADK, choose only Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT))
From the start menu, run the Compatibility Administrator, either the 32-bit or the 64-bit version depending on your application
In the left-hand pane under System Database (32/64-bit) -> Applications, look for the corresponding application (if you can't find a good match, you can look it up in the Event Viewer, see below)
In the large pane on the right-hand side there should be an entry AppHelp - HARDBLOCK
Right-click the exe-file with the hard block and select Disable entry
Now you should be good to go. In my case I additionally had to set the program to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode.
Open the Event Viewer eventvwr.msc
In the left-hand pane, navigate to Application and Services Logs-> Microsoft -> Windows ->Application Experience -> Program Telemetry
In the large middle pane, double click on the event with a timestamp that matches the blocked message. In the window that opens, there should be passage of text like
Compatibility fix applied to C:\DRIVERS\VISTA\PWRMGRV\Setup.exe.
Fix information: Lenovo Power Manager, {c2c0a0a8-ec3a-4f72-b657-5c39de76c771}, 0x10161.
The boldfaced part is what the application is called in the Compatibility Administrator
Make sure you download the latest ADK file.
Good luck

Your guide was great... step by step! Thanks!
And it worked!!!! ... Installed OK and started execution also...!!!
I presume this process could also be used in some other applications with similar problem...
Thanks so much

I was able to go to the url, using internet explorer instead of Edge ( ), so, I start the process, over the day I feel I will have done it.

Hi, thanks for your answer, I will try it, but, could you please edit your post and separate de "from" word with space of the "https" of the url to download the ADK?
Being the url a "short one" I cannot go to it even doing copy/paste....
Thanks so much.

Re: Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
Hi,
Would this be working on Thinkpad T430 too? That's the only issue that's keeping me from switching from Windows 7 to 10.
How is Power Manager in Windows 10 working? Any issues?
Thanks!

Hello.
I presume the answer is yes, it would work.
What I cannot tell you is how power manager works in Windows 10, because there is only few days I followed the suggested process. For the time being, no problem, no error.
Regards.

Re: Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
I managed to smuggle the PowerManager into 10 from 7, but I've noticed some really nasty jerky performance.
I've read that it can lead to some real performance problems under 10, it sucks because I have it set up just how I want, but I'm trying to hunt down some problems on the system, and many things are pointing to it as being a cause.

Re: Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
A simpler way to make the Power Management work is to just install the Lenovo Setting App and then the Power Management drive. If you have more space for Lenovo apps, get the Lenovo Companion. You can tweak most of the Battery settings in the Lenovo Setting app, like setting a max charge threshold and so on. I haven't found a way to set a start charging threshold though...

Re: Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
Re Win 10 on an X220... I was really tired of killing batteries by charging them to 100% all the time. And this is an issue for me, since I usually use my Thinkpad in a docking station.
So, I got an X220 with a quite decent battery, and decided I didn't want to kill it like I had killed all the others. Following the instructions of somebody-or-other, I installed the Lenovo System Interface Foundation, and the Power Management Driver. (I don't recall that either of these steps was too difficult -- the trick was to install the Power Management Driver in Win 7 compatibility mode.)
And it worked! For months! I could set the battery charge and hold thresholds in Lenovo Power Manager 8 (which is what the above installed) and yes I was happy about this.
But suddenly, it has quit. Everything is fine -- the settings stay put and charging goes as expected -- until I shut down the computer. Then, the settings for the Lenovo Power Manager seem to disappear, and the battery charges to 100%. When I turn the machine back on again, my settings are gone, and the battery is fully charged.
I tried re-installing the Power Management Driver, but it didn't help.
Grrr. I was so happy this was working. Does anybody know how/where the Lenovo Power Manager settings are saved, or how I might fix this? Is the native Win 10 power manager overriding the Lenovo PM settings?
Thank you!

Re: Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
(edit: just saw this post. shawross' post above is tackles the 1511 compatibility check directly, but changing the name of setup.exe works too and might be faster for some)
Just to document what I've found out:
On the original Version 1507, Build 10240 version of Windows 10, it was possible to install the Windows 7 / Vista Power Manager to see detailed battery information, set charge thresholds. This side-steps the dysfunctional Lenovo Settings "App" along with the 100MB+ system interface drivers - all you need is the 2MB Power Management driver and 22MB Power Manager.
Method: Run the downloaded installer (e.g. n14u406w.exe), have it unpack the files but don't complete the install. Navigate to the unpacked area (C:\DRIVERS\VISTA\PWRMGRV), right-click on setup.exe and set it to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode. It will install as usual. You can disable the Windows 7 - style Lenovo battery toolbar indicator, and simply right-click on the Windows 10 battery icon system tray to launch Power Manager. It's icon in Control Panel worked OK too.
This worked great until the Version 1511 update. Post-upgrade, an MS compatibility check steps in to install Power Manager (and the X230 Dolby sound driver).
The Dolby sound driver simply reinstalls and runs OK, but Windows 10 pre-emptively steps in and disallows Power Manger setup.exe from running - even with Windows 7 compatibility set.
Here's the trick: make a copy of the unpacked setup.exe (to e.g. setup1.exe). Set Windows 7 compatibility mode and run this copy instead. Everything will install and work as before. Windows 10 apparently signature-checks against filenames, which this defeats. The installer attempts to access 'setup.exe' when running, so copy rather rename.
These existing full-function Windows 7 tools work well under 10, and put the modern "App" to shame. The blind-set Registry edits to set the charge thresholds proposed elsewhere are not necessary.

Re: Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
On my T440, I have been using the old Power Manager 6.67.5 installed from file n14u406w which have been working fine, installed using the tweaks described above.
But yesterday, opening the PM showed that it is now version 8 (8.00.10) without me (knowingly) have done anything to update. Still working fine, showing status of both batteries etc.
How can this be?
Is Lenovo secretly updating the utility to a non-existing version for my Win10 pro?
Anybody with a similar experience?

This is golden. Finally the Power Manager on W10. The renaming trick + running in W7 mode did it. But it installs with only one power profile; timers off (presentation).

That happened to me too. Strangely, after a reboot, the other profiles appeared.jcvjcvjcvjcv wrote:This is golden. Finally the Power Manager on W10. The renaming trick + running in W7 mode did it. But it installs with only one power profile; timers off (presentation).

I still only have the "timers off" profile, even after reboot. But if you are willing to export them
Loving the new battery (previous one had 42 out of 94 Wh..), although I hope the 1Wh / per cycle capacity loss is not going to be the trend, but only made 3 cycles so far. Cycles at 90 Wh take longer than on 40 Wh

Re: Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
Dear jcv / TPFanatic
I too did the rename of setup.exe to setup1.exe, then set W7 compatibility , but get only one "timers off" profile in Battery section of Power manager (6.86.14) on Win 10 Pro on a W701. Reboots do not bring back other "missing " profiles .
What worries me more is that for a new battery ( 71Wh design capacity) it now shows only 36Wh as 100% capacity after i went into Battery Maintenance on Battery tab & switch from always charge fully to 100% to the next option - optimise for battery life.
I am worried W10 may kill my battery, so what is the best way to :
-- recover all missing profiles in Lenovo Power Manager 6.68.14 under W10 Pro ?
-- ensure the battery is correctly set for maximum battery life under W10 ?
Grateful if you can send me the other Missing profiles , but are they to be manually created in first tab ?
Thanks very much to anyone who can help please !

Re: Lenovo Settings (Power Manager) for Windows 10 on T500
Hi an old thread. I am hoping previous contributors see this and can help me out. I followed the inttructions but notticed the unpacked setup.exe (and renamed setup1 file as a result) cannot be set to compatiblity mode as that is not an option.
These are the release notes. I am guessing for older versions.
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1fup85w.txt
I downloaded from here:
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/prod ... Management
I'm trying to force install this on an x201 running W10 (clean install) version 2004.
Thanks in advance for any help!
