R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
My R500 seems to perform an overheat shutdown randomly but often enough.
It sounded like the fan was going or had some kind of obstruction and I replaced it and the heat sink paste (Arctic Silver)
I run CoreTemp 1.1 and dont see any outrageous temp swings.
But when it does shut off, I'll blow air thru the cooling fins and the air seems quite hot!
Is it hot enough to cause a thermal overload protection shutdown? I don't know.
Right now Core temp shows
Core #0 60c min 43c max 66c
Core #1 59c min 43c max 66c
Are these normal temps for an r500? I have not done any overclocking or CPU swap.
info from Core temp . . .
model: Mobile Intel core 2 duo p8600 Penryn - 3m
platform: socket P mfcpga -478
frequency: 2526.14mhz (265.91 x 9.5 )
Vid: 1.1000v
cpuid: 0x1067a
the only thing that prevents a shut down is an external fan blowing thru rent vent of r500!
thanks in advance, Eto

Re: R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
OK, I have removed the fan for 5 minutes and these are the CoreTemp 1.1 temp figures . . .
Core #0 60c min 43c max 67c
Core #1 60c min 43c max 74c
OK, the fan has been removed for 15 minutes and these are the CoreTemp 1.1 temp figures . . .
Core #0 61c min 43c max 67c
Core #1 59c min 43c max 74c
I'll post one more reading at 30 minutes without the external cooling fan blowing on the r500's intake fins. In the mean time is it possible there is some other unknown (at this point) cause that is terminating my R500?
As far as virus/malware protection to eliminate a rogue program, I use ESET Smart Security and Malwarebytes !
A virus wouldn't care about the fan, and not really sure the fan is the "life buoy" it appears to be, in saving my R500 from a thermal overload shutdown!
I think I'll try an F8 Safe boot with networking (SOoooooo much easier with windows 7!) to narrow it down to a software or hardware issue!
Any other suggestions, my learned friends?

Re: R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
Maybe you bought that machine 2nd-hand and the previous owner overclocked the hell out of it?
The official shutdown temp for a P8600 is 105°C.
Also, blowing air into the fan-opening might prevent the CPU-fan from working properly.
I suggest to buy another P8600 (or T9400), they are dirt cheap on eBay.
Then check that the cooler makes proper contact with the CPU.
Apply AS5 as per instructions: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth ... d_v1.1.pdf
And stop using that external fan.

thanks real black stuff for suggestions
Re: R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
The CPU seems to be cooling fine but what about the Northbridge with Intel graphics? R500 with integrated graphics, I assume, has thermal paste between heatsink and Northbridge. With Intel graphics the Northbridge could be getting hot? But you did repaste, so
no idea why it's having these problems, unless you did the CPU but not the Northbridge.

Re: R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
The copper heat sink component covers both CPU and GPU, and used arctic silver on both. i dont think i used TOO much heat sink paste as I use a credit card to make the layer even across both CPU/GPU surfaces and wipe away any excess.
Sometimes it will play for a while without doing a "Exceeded Thermal Limit" shutdown, I watch the CPU load on core temp.
I also started a logging feature with Core-Temp (didn't realize it had that option).
I'm going to let it run without the fan latter today and see what is recorded to the log.
Realblackstuff the fan blows INTO the intake radiator grid and NOT against the fan output radiator grid.

Re: R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
I hate to disappoint you, but there is no INTAKE grid, both grids on rear and left are OUTLETS!Eto wrote:Realblackstuff the fan blows INTO the intake radiator grid and NOT against the fan output radiator grid.
The "fresh" air is sucked in through a bunch of holes in the bottom.
Re: R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
Here's a twist, if I run my R500 WITHOUT the power supply it doesn't shut off (thermal overload) till the battery completely discharges?
Re: R500 randomly shuts down overheating issue?
oh and thanks for the input realblackstuff I didn't know/realize that about where the intake was/is!
