Its exiting that so many ordered! I am very tempted even though I don´t have a X6x. I´m holding out for the "retro" but I might regret it... But if the "retro" turns out not to be all that the potential buyers want/need then there might be another batch of X62 or maybe even a X63.

Anyway, best of luck to you who did order! Hope to see lots of detailed reviews ;)

I haven't seen in the thread that there are actually 2 versions of the board: X62 and X62s with a smaller fan. I order X62s as a replacement for X61s. Hope this default logic is the right one.

Someone got into contact with a Chinese seller that is selling complete systems with SXGA+ displays and/or motherboards. Stock is limited, but there is a google form if anyone is intersted:

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... te/d60ncx2

Using the extra costs and effort of using a middleman to make the purchase as an excuse, I was planning on waiting it out to see how you all fared with ordering and installing the motherboard, and then waiting to see if / when HOPE releases X62 for international sale. But this reddit post has possibly lowered my barrier to entry, rendering my excuse powerless to stop me from embarking with you all on this journey.

Here's to hoping there are language options in the BIOS which is natively written in Chinese, and that it is easy to configure. ;p

@fatpolomanjr I saw the reddit post just now as well and I´m finding my self in a difficult situation:

- Wait for the "retro", which might not be all that I want, and miss the opportunity to buy a complete, ready to use X62 thinkpad (with IPS!). Will there be more pre-built laptops like this for the same price next year? Most likely no.

- Buy this laptop now and cope with the possibility that there might be kinks and stuff that don´t make it the ultimate daily driver for ME. Cope with the fact that I would not be able to justify buying the "retro" when its out.

Two questions for the knowledgeable people in this thread: Will a Samsung M2 ssd work at full speed in the X62 and do you think I´m able to just slot in a SWE keyboard in the X62 and it´ll work?

I don't see why there shouldn't be another batch, even into next year, seeing as this sells out quite well. Moreover, some people here believe in mythical T70 (which would be a similar remake of T60/1) and would actually make for a real retro.

You might be right about more batches, but a pessimistic person is seldom disappointed ;)

A T70 would be very nice! Let's hope it happens!

Same. The seller sent me payment request for one motherboard, which will be from the second batch of X62.

Due to the success of the X62, they're starting to poll for the designs on the T70 and X210.

I'd really love to see an X302, with an IPS display...

See the reddit link I posted. There were some 7 out of 20 motherboards from the second batch ordered already.

e: It was updated.

I also think it is possible that in the future we might get adaptable mobo options from a company like Raspberry Pi or maybe Intel.

A Raspberry Pi is a substantially worse computer than the X300 motherboard, though.

For anyone getting an X62, I highly recommend flashing this 60Hz HV121P01 EDID to your SXGA+ display so it can run at 60Hz instead of the stock 50Hz. For some content designed for 60fps this is a beneficial change to prevent temporal aliasing stutter. I've written about it here.

No argument there.

If you build it similar to how Norway Pad did with his homemade Retrothinkpad I think it's doable.

You can plug in a Compute Stick, but it might be more like a sidegrade rather than an upgrade from the X301's CPU. Then again, you gain 2 extra cores.

I read through your article, but I don't know how to ground an eeprom or what a "leg" looks like. After doing so, you flash the display from a command line program in an OS environment like linux or windows right? Not with an external device?

I just modded the metal frame of an X60 Tablet SXGA+ (omg so much cutting with a dremel when you follow the german wiki) and successfully installed one of xiphmont's LED kits, which works beautifully. So before I experience the pain of getting it back into the lid I want to do any further mods while it is out.

No question there but in future years this won't be the case IMHO. Today obviously the technology is not there but driven by companies like Arm and Intel with their Xeon Processors you will see amazing advancement.
To think that the Raspberry Pi will not advance any further is a bit short sighted IMO. But how long this technology takes to advance and it what directions we will need to wait and see.

Yes, the flashing process was done in Linux. Perhaps Powerstrip will allow it under Windows with some versions.

I wish I had been at a capacity to take more photos at the time. The EEPROM is a small 8-pin chip on the control board of the LCD, which is near the display LVDS connector. Pin #7 is the write protect pin, which must be 1) desoldered from the PCB and lifted gently upwards so as to not make electrical contact, and 2) attached via a small wire to pin #1 on the chip, which provides 3.3V. Once this is complete, the LCD will allow the computer to rewrite its EDID ROM contents using the edid-rw software, or any other software of choice.

The EDID may be rewritten using external solutions, though, as this person did for a monitor: http://www.imsolidstate.com/archives/879

I presume (same applies to NorwayPad) the UpBoard could already compete with x301 as it has an Intel Atom at decent freq... while being passively cooled and of identical dimensions to RasPi: http://www.up-board.org/specifications/

It would be really interesting if Lenovo ever sold the licensing for the x60/t60 casing to raspberry pi so they could make a laptop. If Libreboot was less of a grass roots organization, I'm sure they could join in too. Perhaps remaking old laptops with newer/more powerful/cheaply produced hardware is the way of the future.

I read that there was a delay and that the second batch wouldn't be finished with production until mid-September.
