Firefox 53: no support for Windows XP or Vista

#1 Post by Puppy » Sat Oct 01, 2016 11:00 am

For those who still use old ThinkPads with XP

Mozilla plans to end mainline support for the Microsoft operating systems Windows XP and Windows Vista with the release of Firefox 53 in March 2017.

It makes sense because it slow downs further development.

The PowerPC Macintosh community created a version of Firefox to continue unofficial support for PowerPC Macs that were dropped after the 3.6 line; I wouldn't be surprised if someone (at MSFN, etc.) created something similar based on Firefox 45 or 52 ESR to continue unofficial support for XP/Vista (maybe even 2000) in the same manner :)

I run Firefox 45 ESR using BlackWingCat's KernelEx under Windows 2000 on my Z60m, haven't had any issues in my experience (you will have to extract it from the installer using 7-Zip or a similar program however, or run the portable version)

It makes sense because it slow downs further development.
For XP it kind of makes sense development-wise; for Vista - not really, but it does make sense testing-wise.

Very little that has reasonable cause to be in a browser's code can break on Vista (if it works on Win7). But they probably can't be bothered to actually test it to be able to commit that it will work, so they will just have to create an artificial block to prevent it from installing on Vista. Good job!

But, hey, it's not like Microsoft's treatment of Vista has been any better. ;)

If you want to continue using PaleMoon on XP, you can.
Just don't update beyond V26.5.0 and set your PaleMoon Update to NEVER:
https://www.palemoon.org/PM_end_of_WinXP_support.shtml

On my desktop with W7/64-bit and 12GB RAM I use the 32-bit PaleMoon in combo with Rizonesoft's Firemin.
No Firefox for me!

On Windows XP and Vista Firefox automatically updates to 52.0 ESR version now.

Important - Firefox is ending support for Windows XP and Vista

Firefox security updates for XP and Vista users will continue until September 2017, although new features will not be offered. In mid-2017, a final support end date will be announced based on the number of users still on Windows XP and Vista.

The main problem is Windows XP.
Because on 7 you can get the new opera, just put it on "battery saving mode" and even on a pentium M it is will be "fast". (my experience at work, and I've tried different browsers such as K-meleon (one of the fastest)).
Maybe K-meleon will work on XP, but is based on a outdated chromium I believe.

I use the FreeBSD ports system so when a vulnerability is discovered in Firefox I have to find a substitute available in ports to make do till the maintainer patches it. Midori is about the best alternative I've found, and there is a version for Windows too:

http://www.midori-browser.org/

And if it comes down to it there's always lynx.

Mozilla announces extended end-of-life support for Firefox under Windows XP and Vista

Today we are announcing June 2018 as the final end of life date for Firefox support on Windows XP and Vista. As one of the few browsers that continues to support Windows XP and Vista, Firefox users on these platforms can expect security updates until that date. Users do not need to take additional action to receive those updates.

On my ThinkPad T41 with XP Pro SP3, my main installed browsers that I use day to day are:

Internet Explorer 8 (generally outdated, unsafe, only used for legacy testing)
Google Chrome 49.0.2623.112 m (the final version for XP),
Mozilla Firefox ESR 52.x.x (currently 52.9.0 as of this writing)

Other browsers I use on occasional basis, standalone/portable browsers, etc:

Advanced Chrome 54 (fork of Google Chrome, in development, contains bits and pieces from 49, 51, 54)
New Moon 27.x (spinoff of Pale Moon, in development, continues Windows XP support)
Opera 36.0.2130.65
Pale Moon 26.5.0
Sea Monkey 2.49.4
SlimJet 10.0.13.0

Windows XP will be around for years to come, whether people want to accept it or not.

Microsoft will finally lift their blessing for the last supported version of XP next April. That'll be a historic milestone. What other mainstream technology product has been supported this well by its OEM and third parties for almost 18 years?
