Hey guys, breaking news! I've just uncovered a photo prototype of the upcoming Not-IBM classic ThinkPad:

Image

It will feature:
  • A 19" 16:9 display with the classic resolution of 1024x576, accompanied by intense LED PWM for maximum flicker
  • The 'classic keyboard' nobody wants with the extra large delete and esc keys instead of the (you know) regular 7-Row
  • Ultra-low profile TrackPoints so none of the 'classic' caps you have will fit anymore
  • The new TrackPoint MONO-BUTTON, this new revolutionary button is touch-sensitive and will 'assume' what function you want based on where your thumb touches. Don't worry, the Lunovoh SuperSense (TM) Algorithm will ensure mispresses don't happen!
  • The mega-ultra-wide TouchPad also bundled with Lunovoh SuperSense (TM) to determine which button you want to press at the bottom
  • Classic (optional) discreet audio buttons are $199 extra as a part of the Lunovoh SuperMedia bundle: a bundle that helps enhance your multimedia experience on the Not-IBM ThinkPad!
List price: $2999 ($3198 w/ SuperMedia)

Forgive my ignorance, but does this come from an acutal thinkpad or is it a montage?

Well, the name of the image gives it away (Thinkpad SL300).

If you want to go even further back, then Thinkpad 240 had a 6-row keyboard. But that was a 10.4" ultraportable...

why not "innovate" with 21:9 aspect ratio?

Back to the topic :) Is there any known progress of the project or it has been killed silently by Lenovo in favor of more crippled Android/Chrome/crapware laptops/tablets (that will dominate for masses in the future, unfortunately) ?

The last news of it was just Lenovo managers providing speculative details. If the Retro ThinkPad isn't going to feature a proper display and keyboard (and knowing Lenovo that'll probably be the case), forget it.

Wait until CES in January. If they won't present anything during CES you can consider it killed. However, for now there's a chance they still hold it to show off during CES. I also hope for a nice refresh of T and X series (NVMe disks and Thunderbolt 3 would be wonderful, just as better screens of course).

They did show the thinknpad 13 and X1C OLED at CES this year while you could not buy one before much later in the year. Couldnt they do it for the TP classic too? they should have some mechanical design to show, even if not final.

I wouldencourage them to do so (if the project is still alive) to make people (like me) wait for a bit longer.

Another thing they can do:
put 3:2 or 16:10 screen in X/T/P and use the height won to give us a 7row kboard (and make it chicklet if they want to i dont care). Then classic would have much less importance.

no need for a special new line of product to do that fairly simple thing.

Edit: it is impressive how we have no rumors this year on the ThinkPad line 2017, 2 months before CES...

Exactly, they might wanna wait on until October which, if I remember correctly, would mark the de-facto 25-th anniversary of Thinkpads.

Likely. I still don't understand why there is the silence about this particular project because competition can hardly create a "Retro ThinkPad".

Impossible. We can hope that most of them won't get 50 Hz PWM

Yeah. It's never too early to give just a little teaser given the project was announced back in 2015. A teaser by definition wouldn't spoil anything.

Then again, any sensible company would have regularly communicated on a so-called "transparent" design process ; and we aren't dealing with a sensible company.

Aparrently Lenovo just went a bit into the bezel-less direction with their new Yoga 910. This machine resembles X1C to such a degree, that I would be very suprised if the latter didn't get similar screen very soon.

Just catching up with the competition (XPS). I'd wait for detailed review. I smell cheap low-gamut pentile matrix display with Lenovo (tm) 50 Hz PWM.

I hope this isn't the future. The screen is still 16:9, and they further shrunk the keyboard from 6 1/2 rows to 6.
There's just one issue I have with the keyboard: the right Shift key has been shrunk to fit the up-arrow key next to it. As a right-handed person who spends most of her day typing, this really got in my way on a regular basis. Every time I went to capitalize something, I ended up with my next sentence in the line above it. I tried to give up and use the full-sized left Shift key, but it just didn't suit my typing style. Begrudgingly, I kept using the tiny Shift key, and after typing a few hundred words, I started to get used to it.
Work: T60/61 FPad (Win 7, UXGA IPS); T60/61 FPad (Win 7, UXGA IPS); forever.
Toys: X1 (first gen, Win 7); T450s (Win 7).

I was just minimizing the disasters:) IF thinkpads were not to change at all, say, T470 would look just as T460 -- and Retro doesn't come out -- I wouldn't mind a bigger screen in the same chassis. Of course, well informed people say T/X will be redesigned anyway for 2017, so that's probably not the case but who knows.
As far as the keyboard goes... You know, some people said TP 6rows was [censored], and then came Apple... 5rows + dungbar. I think nobody at Lenovo would be insane enough to degrade TP keyboard further, as with this shift key...

Why not, just another "innovation". Especially if it allows to share parts = just another cutting costs. Lenovo is probably not able to get more crappy (= cheaper) displays than current terrible ones so the keyboard is another part they could save on. You can expect:

- shared keyboard part with even more broken layout
- cheap plastic parts that cracks spontaneously (P series already features this)
- USB type C only
- twenty different vendors of the "same" display component, 50 Hz PWM and 55% rgb color space coverage guaranteed
- BIOS always in beta stage, boot drive not found "pro" feature included
- one year old graphic drivers that BSODs once a week
- UltraSecure Boot Dock - when disconnected from a dock motherboard have to be replaced in 1 of 10 cases (P series already features this) to prevent unauthorized access

Oh, search my recent posts.... someone at Synaptics has [....]. "Newest driver" is not quite the same as "best driver"...

They tried the stunt with no physical buttons on the W540, and so far the only excuse I hear from W540 users to not replace that nonsense with the palmrest of the W541 (buttons!!!) is "I always use an external mouse".

576p

yo, that's my jam.

While like many of you we were all caught up in the classic TP fever, at this point most of us would think this thing would never eventuate.

Why? Because I dont think the demand would make things profitable.

But lastly, the success of this device would tend to bely their current design strategy... why would they go with an old design when their marketing says the new design is 'so much better' and that 'everyone has moved over'.

Its like as if Tesla introduced a gasoline powered car.

New Lenovo is the 'island keyboard', "one piece touchpad" and all the modern lenovo nonsense we hate.
