Heat Sink Thermal paste.
Heat Sink Thermal paste.
I'm looking for the thermal paste for a T20 that I am restoring. The ibm part number is 05k5751.
I have thermal grease. The IBM machine is using a paste. It is hard to tell when searching the web for paste not grease. You think I could put grease over the cpu to stick to the paste?
Thanks
R

Re: Heat Sink Thermal paste.
Thermal grease and thermal paste are the same thing.
Before applying a ricecorn-size dollop of fresh paste, clean off the old goop properly with 91% Isopropyl alcohol.
I now recommend Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut or Kryonaut

Re: Heat Sink Thermal paste.
I'd take it one step further and use a liquid metal TIM, such as conductonaut or liquid ultra (my personal favorite). Ignore this, it will not work for the T2x with aluminium heatsinks.

Here is a picture of the paste. The paste is on the heat sink. The impress is the top of the PIII.

I do not think grease will do. Slide around over time.

rccharles,
You need a thermal pad. Liquid Ultra reacts badly with Aluminum.

That stuff is NOT suited for laptops!Raidriar wrote:I'd take it one step further and use a liquid metal TIM, such as conductonaut or liquid ultra (my personal favorite). The G30 has a nice beefy copper heatsink which is perfect for use with a liquid metal TIM, just be careful with applying. Nothing moves heat like metal.
Please read up on the matter before giving such totally wrong advice!
OP has a T20/T21/T22 which have aluminum heatsinks, NOT a G30, which doesn't even exist AFAIK..
Re: Heat Sink Thermal paste.
Oh snap I'm sorry, I thought I read this as T30, typed in G30 (meaning to type T30), I was reading too quickly and have since edited my post to remove the bad information.RealBlackStuff wrote:That stuff is NOT suited for laptops!Raidriar wrote:I'd take it one step further and use a liquid metal TIM, such as conductonaut or liquid ultra (my personal favorite). To reiterate, you cannot use liquid metal TIM with aluminum heat sinks, it will certainly corrode it.
But it can certainly be used in laptops with copper heatsinks. I have them in the T420, X220, and several alienwares, and it does a marvelous job. It also never dries out if the fit of the heatsink is good enough to eliminate air pockets. I will be doing the same with the T30 and T61P

Re: Heat Sink Thermal paste.
AS5 is no longer the king. A good diamond based paste is the way to go, such as ICD, Antec Formula 7, or Gelid GC Extreme. Furthermore, if the heatsink contact is good, I've had excellent success with the Coollaboratory Liquid MetalPad, which is aluminum heatsink safe.jaspen-meyer wrote:You should write a book debunking human engineering feats.rccharles wrote:I do not think grease will do.
