Large storage capacity on the go, or reasons why I would NEED a SSD..
My future budget is pretty restricted, and I know everyone says to upgrade to SSD for the speed and ruggedness, but any future budget I got right now won't allow me to get a drive big enough for things I need stored, I have a massive library of books documents, music and photos and even a samsung 500GB SSD simply won't be big enough, the only option I can see for large capacity and not horribly slow loads, is the seagate firecuda hybrid line of 2.5 inch drives, really the speed of the SSD is nice, but not mandatory, and the firecudas seem pretty efficient as well, along with having much more capacity. The 5 year warranty is pretty encouraging too.
So can anyone give a really good reason why I shouldn't go with the firecuda given my storage capacity needs and my budget restrictions? Right now i got a unlabeled 128gb SSD that could crap out anytime given the inventory it came from.

What would this be installed in?
On many of the models, you can use a small(er) SSD as the OS/boot disk and get an Ultrabay adapter for a traditional HDD for file storage, so you have the best of both worlds.

x220t, I have no ultrabay, and since I want to be carrying this a lot, a ultrabay would be way to cumbersome to carry around and I don't have one, I know in the future I could just add a ssd msata and put all my OSes on it and boot from that and use the HDD for storage, but that's past my currently perceived budget. Also, he ultrabase won't work with a slice battery either will it?

Right, the tablet won't work with the slice battery.

Alright, cause I got a slice battery, if I ever get the time my next project would be to rebuild the battery pack which I've seen successfully done, are those ultrabase extended batteries any good, it seems they would weight more than the ultrabase itself, but atleast useful if you needed long battery life.

I have a slice battery for my T420/W520. I don't use it often, but it has come in handy a few times. It really adds to the bulk of the machine; with an X220 the extra bulk would be even more apparent because of the smaller size and lighter weight overall of the machine vs. the larger 14 and 15" T/W series cousins.
I've thought about getting one for my X220 but I haven't seen a need yet; before I get the extra battery I'd probably hunt down a Panasonic 6 or 9 cell main battery for it - since when I got it, it was equipped with a generic 6C which only holds a new design capacity of about 80% the genuine full charge capacity.

Slice battery is the only battery mine came with, and even then the runtime isn't that great, a rebuild is in order at the very least. But yeah, the extended batteries add alot of bulk, especially when trying to write or draw on the tablet. I'm curious if a ultrabase style battery might be less cumbersome than the slice, maybe someone on the forum has tried one.theterminator93 wrote:I have a slice battery for my T420/W520.
