Youtube on T4x

#1 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Thu Jul 13, 2017 9:55 am

What OS/Software do you use to watch videos on a T4x machine. What quality do you get out of the video(240p, 360p, 720p). Im not expecting a 4k@60 video :)
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

The answer to your question(s) will depend on which T4x system - as well as which OS - we are discussing.

On my SATA-modded 15" T43p running W7 Pro 360 is fine, 720 is pushing it and can be severely stuttering at times, using Pale Moon.

Honestly, I rarely bother with YT on anything that sports a single-core CPU, but that's me.

I dont understand why a RPI with a 700Mhz ARM can do 720p no problem but a 2+GHz P4 cant. Im guessing ARM architecture is just plain more efficent :(

You do understand that the chips in T4x series are not P4 units, or related to them in any shape or form?

Well, no one envisioned running today's web - let alone YT - on these CPUs back in 2004...

Hmm, on my stock 15" T43p at UXGA running W10 pro 720 is totally fine, 1080p won't play at all. Thanks to Microsoft Edge. However, DRM content won't play well at all.
Also do you have H264ify? I heard that will improve performance

H264ify doesn't do * for my Firefox. 1080 60FPS is more like 1080 0FPS.

I use Minitube on OpenBSD on my 15" T43p. It plays at 480p in fullscreen perfectly smoothly. I just watched this video in fullscreen and the CPU remained at 85% idle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEGOihjqO9w

Did you use youtube-dl to pull it down?

I asked because I just clicked the link on my Windows machine, and the 1080p version auto-loaded.

I use Youtube Downloader HD to download and play and save YouTube videos. They play just fine after downloading and then I usually want to save some of them anyway. I use the portable version ... very stable, current version was released in February.

May not be what you really want but videos download nice and play very well with Media Player Classic in the full K-Lite Codec Pack 13.3.5.

I use Windows 7, Firefox on my T41, even 144p video stutters in the normal player, but I got an addon for Firefox for downloading YouTube videos, which fits neat into the Share/Add to/More bar, and I middle click (open in new tab) on the download button and the video plays perfectly in the Firefox video player, without having to download the whole thing. It even does 720p fairly well but the network card struggles to keep up, 720p is flawless on Ethernet.

Not on debian 9 it doesn't ;) Funnily i switched to debian from arch when arch announced they were planning to depreciate 32bit, i feel debian 32bit runs better on this machine than arch did. But arch would play 720p files downloaded by youtube-dl OK, debian not so. There are only 2 major changes, obviously arch > debian 9 and i've used btrfs instead of ex4 for the home partition.

I wonder if this has something to do with Debian switching back to ffmpeg (from libav). I performed a live upgrade (apt dist-upgrade) from Debian 8 to 9 when it came out, and encountered an issue with video playback. What program are you using to play 720p videos, and what issue are you having?

It's not really a problem as the T43 gets used mainly as work machine so i don't watch much video on it, plus at its age any video play back let alone 720p is welcomed.

mpv plays 480p fine but 720p de-syncs the audio and it now has occasional fits of the stutters.

The main factor there is how compressed the data is. The less compressed, the better playback. Youtube happens to be very compressed, so maybe a Blu-Ray over USB could fare better.

Let's face it, blu-ray in T43p isn't pretty even with my absolute maximum specifications. I have personally tried both blu-ray disc playback and blu-ray file playback. The results aren't pretty. Bluray files use a uncompressed file yea, which explains why it's large, but it also uses much higher quality files, which also explains it's file size and that kills the T43p.

T4* models can only play 480p YT videos, and even then that is pushing it. Just a few years ago I had no problem playing 720p videos full screen in crunchbang linux on a med-spec T43. My overall feeling is that modern browsers have become too bloated for these machines. Web browsing is way more painful than it was not too long ago.

Having said that, a youtube client such as minitube or youtube-viewer make watching and playing HD videos perfectly smoothly.

I think it is perhaps due to no HTML5 hardware decoding by the video card. Is very big CPU usage on the videos with resolution above 360p. Youtube not allow playing videos through FLASH since september of 2017 and i am use PotPlayer and PotPlayer Youtube plugin Shortcut for Firefox (and other browsers) able to play videos with hardware acceleration with resolution up to FullHD without freeses and frame drop! :thumbs-UP:

It would be nice if an HTML 5 video decoder could be installed in a mini PCI or PCIE form factor, it would solve one of the obsolescing factors that keep old laptops from competing for consumer web use.

The end of Adobe Flash will do great things as well for Core 2 Duo era laptops.

I wouldn't count on it. It's not Flash that's at fault - it's the codec.

Why not a Mini-PCI atom coprocessor :) . I could see that improving performance, but the pci bus is a bit limiting.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
