Thinkpad W520 screen replacement. Suggestion on after market screens.
Hello everyone.
I have a Thinkpad W520 and because i have a permanent imprint caused from the trackpoint pressure i want to replace it with a new one. My current screen is 1600x900.
I've found some new screens sold at Ebay at the price of about 60 euros (1600x900). Does anyone have experience with them? Are they inferior than the original one of the W520? Is there difference on color quality? On contrast? Do they have so dark black like the original one or the black is like dark gray?
Thank's.

1: Look up the model number listed on the eBay ListingLoneTraveler wrote:Hello everyone.

2: Match compatible model numbers
3: Make sure it doesnt mention "xx model number compatoble lcd" that is a surefire way to get a TN screen(grey not black) instead of IPS (black black).

Thinkpad4by3 i didn't understand very well what you meant. I search for the screen using the FRU number. As you say they write at the descriptions that they'll send the exact model or something compatible if not found the exact. From the price i'm afraid about the quality of the screen. Also the policy for the pixels doesn't ensure "0 dead pixel", something that i don't like at all.
Also I never thought that my original panel is IPS. I don't think W520 came out of the factory with IPS. The contrast is great and the black true black. And colors are not inversed looking from the side. But i thought that it is just TN or LCD or whatever (i'm not an expert). On the other hand the screen on my old L520 (HD) was awful.

They make every type of screen in every type of resolution ever conceieved.
The 2 main types are TN lile your L520 which has those greys instead of black and bad viewing angles.
Exception: TN screens can be AWFUL or they can be good. Tilt your screen all the way back while at a normal angle. If the colors change, its TN otherwise its IPS.
There is the other main type which is IPS. It has great viewing angles and deep blacks. This is your current W520 screen.
There are 2 model numbers. When looking for a new LCD, you will need the LCD Model Number. THIS IS NOT THE FRU. An LCD model number can vary by manufacturer. A samsung might be LTN141U1. You can see how this isnt like the FRU number which is 00x0000.
Make sure the seller is well rated and doesnt seem fishy. If you still arent sure, you are free to PM an eBay link if you would like me to take a look at it. A good sign if it has a real picture, not a placeholder image.

Thinkpad4by3 thank you very much for your help!
OK, i didn't know that my W520 has IPS panel.. interesting
Well, i figured out some things searching the last hours. What i want is exactly this model (AUO B156HW01 v4). Actually an upgrade of my current LP156WD1 (1600x900). The original of course. I've found a seller who offers it (i've already asked if he/she ensures that it is the original that Lenovo used to use, and wait for answer). The problem is the pixel policy (ISO-9241 CLASS 1). Who wants to take the risk of having a dead pixel in the center of the screen? I wouldn't have problem to pay even 25% above the price to have "0 dead pixel" guaranty at least for a year..

You don't even want to touch swapping LCD panels of different makes and models. I've tried and sometimes it works no problem, and sometimes wierd things can happen. Sometimes, it flat out doesnt work. Use the EXACT panel that is in you W520 or get a replacement top unit. You have to match the LCD cable that came with your panel. In the decade prior, IBM put little resistors in the cables to tell the computer the LCD resolution, so screens have to be swapped with cables. Now, Lenovo uses many different manufacturers, each with a slightly different pinout. If the green wores and the red wires are on different pins, your colors will be bad.LoneTraveler wrote:Thinkpad4by3 thank you very much for your help!

Tl;dr Match the lcd panel with what you have or risk problems.

Thinkpad4by3 that's a pity.. I'd like to upgrade the screen. But of course not take the risk. Do these pictures i attach help to know if the FHD display will be compatible? Do they give any clues about the wires that you said above?

Actually, youre in luck, all GENUINE W520 screens are plug and play, so your road to FHD is clear .
Even I wasnt sure so I had to resort to others on this fourms .
I just wanted to warn you cuz i once did T430s lcd in T420 (768p-->900p) and i got every green pixel on, every other pixel off. It looked horrid.
People on the fourms will be able to sell you a compatible GENUINE W520, and those sellers are more experienced than me on compatible LCDs. Regardless, ordering ans waiting for mail from Hong Kong is a pain in the a-- .

The W520 does not come with an IPS option. However the FHD option (TN) has Wider viewing angles than a crap/cheap TN screen.Thinkpad4by3 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 23, 2017 2:15 pmThe 2 main types are TN lile your L520 which has those greys instead of black and bad viewing angles.

I don't know how safe is it to buy from members of forums. Actually i can't see any sign of safety! Maybe i'll find to buy from Europe and not from Hong Kong. You did very well to warn me. Re: Thinkpad W520 screen replacement. Suggestion on after market screens.
I finally bought from ebay the AUO B156HW01 v4. It was the original. But it was defective (fairly big press mark on one side) and had to return it to the seller. My impression of this screen was not good. It was very very red! And even when i changed the color's temperature to higher value i kept seen a clear red line at the base of the screen. Also changing the color temperature i saw some "blue ghosting" when scrolling text on a white background. The same happens with my current screen when i make the colors warmer but i see red ghosting. I guess it has to do with slow response time. So i'm searching for another compatible model or maybe will buy exactly the same model as i have now LP156WD1(TL)(B2) since i like it very much but has some problem.
So could you make any suggestions about compatible screens? Some requirements for me are:

Been there done that with defectice LCDs. Seemed great at first until the onset of purple lines.... That was the end of that lcd.

Definitely defective, this screen is regarded as the best screen for this series. I have few of these screens and non of them have a red tint.LoneTraveler wrote: ↑Thu Jul 13, 2017 7:00 pmMy impression of this screen was not good. It was very very red!
As alternative you could try the B156HW01 v7, which is the same as v4 but glossy (provided you don't mind the reflective surface). Also the other "V" versions from AUO will work (like v1, v2, etc) but are of inferior quality.
I also have a W510 with a LP156WF1-TLB2, a very nice screen IMO, although inferior to the V4/V7.

Re: Thinkpad W520 screen replacement. Suggestion on after market screens.
I don't like glossy screens so never thought of buying the v7 model.
The v1 seems good solution (it's also very bright). But i don't think that i'll be able to find such old screens and that they won't be defective or at least have a dead pixel People all these years asked for testing them before shipping so i guess that what is now left is defective or with dead pixels.
So my only solution is to find a NEW compatible model. How can i know which NEW models are compatible with the W520? What I mean to get a "list" or create one after search with all the models that fit without problem..
Does anybody have an idea?

I don't have a list of compatible models (apart from the ones mentioned before). According to Panelook.com these should be compatible (but they sometimes have errors in their specs so take this list with a pinch of salt)

I don't think that's necessary, I've used so far 4 different types of displays for T/W510 and T/W520 series and it was plug and play. No EDID flashing of any kind was needed...

Re: Thinkpad W520 screen replacement. Suggestion on after market screens.
How much did the screen cost and who was the seller? If you post the source we may be able to advise - not saying you made the wrong judgement, but ebay etc. are littered with "compatible" fake screens.LoneTraveler wrote: ↑Thu Jul 13, 2017 7:00 pmI finally bought from ebay the AUO B156HW01 v4. It was the original. But it was defective (fairly big press mark on one side) and had to return it to the seller.
The B156HW01 is a great screen, which makes me think it was a fake rather than a dud.

where can i add the "compatible" panel to the comparison?Tasurinchi wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2017 3:15 amI don't have a list of compatible models (apart from the ones mentioned before). According to Panelook.com these should be compatible (but they sometimes have errors in their specs so take this list with a pinch of salt)Code: Select all

and which one is the correct number from the 3 of them at the back of the original old panel?

You got a compatible panel? I think you better upload a picture. Each manufacturer put stickers in different places.screenshot wrote: ↑Fri Jul 03, 2020 5:56 pmand which one is the correct number from the 3 of them at the back of the original old panel

I normally go to panelook.com and enter the model# in the search bar.
Then if you scroll down, you see an overview of the models of your current screen first, and if you keep scrolling down, sometimes (it doesn't work for all LCD models) a list of compatible models. For example for my LP156WF1-TLB2:

ok, the screen is probably this then:
https://www.panelook.com/LTN154U2-L05_S ... _8683.html
but it doesnt show any compatible model icon on the top right and what are those 6bit hot models?
or maybe something via the signal interface model?:o
https://www.panelook.com/connector_mode ... hp?id=1311
or maybe just these from t61p with best brightness?

For which laptop do you want to replace the screen? I was assuming a W520 but now I see a T61p in the talk...

no, i was just thinking that if t61p(or any other) had a brighter screen, then you could just plug that in as-is? (just to get better brightness, but not ips etc if you dont need that)

Unfortunately those screens were not particularly bright.
Plus the T61p screens are 16:10 vs 16:9 for the W520
