Horizontal absolute max is 301mm. Vertical is 203mm. 191mm from webcam's plastic bottom to bottom of the lid. 176mm from webcam to hinges. 188mm from top to hinges.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
So, it seems I got a W21 instead of a W11. Not much info on that panel neither, but CHECK THIS OUT ! Google found me a guy that says it's the panel from the 2016 xps. Pretty sure the plug being 1" further will mean my extender won't be long enough and I'll have to find another cable though.
Check the distance between the edge (right) and display protector (left) !
Will test tomorrow and post more pictures.
I was right. F**k that W03.

Yay for having room on either side, that W21 should fit with enough room for a pet ferret. Those things fit everywhere!

It does save 6mm (2 more than what I was able to recover modding the W03) and will allow for clips on the bezel sides. It also means we could focus on building a kit instead of talking about ferrets.

I'm a little confused by all the different models in here. What's the model number of the current screen you are using, is it LQ133M1JW21? Is it a matt panel too?

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
They both seem to be different revisions of the same screen. I ordered a W11 and received a W21. It is matte. Ebay seller listed LTN133HL10 as a compatible model but no mention of the W21. I don't really care at that point, panel works and fits. If someone manages to find a datasheed for any of those I'll be very grateful.
After a bit of research it seems the 11 is used in the xps 9343 and the 21 in the 9350. Check reviews on those (FHD non touch) for a bit more specs. This one has good info.
I did some fitting tests to show more precisely what space is available. You could trim those clips by less than 0.5mm on one side and the panel will fit in-between. Panel is just a hair shorter than 299mm.
Cable IS too short even with the side switcher. I might go the ghetto way and just chain 2 switchers together.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
Thanks for the info.
I can't seem to find the same screen as you without it being a gloss panel. I'll keep an eye on ebay.
Edit:
I did a little bit more research into the panel I mentioned previously from the ideaPad 710s. It seems it's model number LQ133m1jw15 and looks like the connector is in the same position as on the OEM X2xx screens.
Here's some info on it.

Glossy is the assembly with touchscreen. Panel itself is matte.
Looking at that W15, not much details, but sellers mention the equivalent LP133WF4 SPB1 that is listed at 300.26mm wide. AFAIK it should fit.
Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
Good info, thanks.
Maybe I'll borrow the 710s screen for testing and if it works in the lid then I'll buy another.

I've been trying to find this W11 panel on ebay and the likes with no success. Is there an alternative model number for it or something? Any links to where you bought yours?

Hi boutch55555,
Any updates?
Have you made a trimmed the bezel for the 21 screen? Also, have you done any battery life measurements--stock vs 13 inch with the fhd mod?

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
I finally got some more side switchers for the screen and can at least confirm it works with 2 of those chained. No interference or weird glitches in the panel.
No battery tests as I broke something on my first fhd kit and lost brightness control. Tested with 2 screens and 2 motherboards, so it must be the fhd board. Honestly it now looks so bad with all the repaired traces I'm surprised it still works at all.
I got a new kit from nitrocaster a couple weeks ago but I'm waiting for a x230 for this one. I bought one, should get it next week, so hopefully the final assembly will be on the 23-24 weekend. I will just replace motherboard + bottom of the case on my current build, making this a weird (perfect) x3 2/30 FrankenPad.
Waiting for a friend for a camera to do a full conversion video. I might include the fhd kit install in it. I'll post in a new thread since it will be a guide, not WIP anymore, and keep all the info in the first post. I will link it here once it's posted.
My usual test would be looping a video loaded from a network share on wifi @50% brightness. I could do my classic "plane survival" test, 30% brightness, network + bluetooth disabled, only zsnes open, with the 9 cell + battery slice, with only 8bitdo nes30 retro plugged. Any other tests you'd like ?

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
Are you seeing CABC (content aware brightness control. Irremovable auto brightness in the firmware of some sharp panels)?
Some people on reddit who bought an x330:
https://world.taobao.com/item/550879131 ... 3.6.Pq57nV
Had this when I questioned them about it.
(What do you think of that kit by the way. Is their some discussion somwhere on their LVDS to eDP mod VS nitrocaster's?)

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
I have not noticed it but I read it's enabled on the XPS, so it would apply to both the 03 (2015) and 11/21 (2016). No mention of it in the 03 technical specification PDF though.
As for comparing it with nitrocaster's, for that board, it's pretty similar, but the through hole design of nitrocaster's board will hold the board better without tape / epoxy. They produce newer boards with 4 DP lanes (allows 1440p), msata3 and usb3 (relocated in the expresscard slot), if you need any of those features. I'll try to get one of those.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
I taped the 03 into my lid as a temporary panel and, though it's got some backlight bleed because of how much you have to hack it apart, the brightness does work in linux just fine (Debian stretch and xfce). I haven't tested windows yet, but I imagine it works as well because that would be a screen firmware limitation otherwise.boutch55555 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2017 5:38 amI have not noticed it but I read it's enabled on the XPS, so it would apply to both the 03 (2015) and 11/21 (2016). For a long term solution, I would not recommend the 03. Every time I open or close the lid with the screen on, I get minor backlight bleed which is slowly getting worse. Looks downright beautiful when you're not using anything super dark, though.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
I don't recommend the 03 neither. There is a LQ133M1JW15 that is supposed to be a better substitute for the Ideapad 710 LP133WF4-SPB1. Might want to check if that last screen has CABC issues, since it's the only "compatible" (untested in x220/x230) screen made by LG not Sharp. Both should fit as it's been done on a x240.
I just got everything ready for round 2, I'll post details when done. Also, yay, the 9 cell included with the x230 is genuine, has only 100 cycles, 87% original capacity.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
Oh boy this is easy compared to the 03.
Mostly what has changed from last time + details on lid fitting : https://imgur.com/a/6CGlx
Still needs some finishing, but looks way better than the first one.
I'll get all the info from this thread and make a wiki page or something so it's more readable.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
By the way, battery benchmarks will likely take all week to get. I run a clean Windows 10 install, as I could not get Debian to show on the screen after 1h of messing with it, no time to troubleshoot and want to get those benchmarks out. Balanced performance power profile, 100% brightness (made sure Windows ABC is disabled), wifi card disabled in software (no surprises from Windows Update). Nothing running aside from a batch script that outputs a timestamp to a file each 60 sec.
I'll be doing and posting (in order)
LQ133M1JW21 (FHD 13.3)
B125XW01 V0 (stock TN)
LP125WF2-SPB3 (FHD 12.5, one of recommended screens for nitrocaster's mod)
I'll check if the LP125WH2-SLB1 (stock IPS) I got works and add it to the list
I might do a couple test runs on FHD without screen mirroring since I'm already at 100% brightness to test the impact of it and have an idea of the possible gains of a coreboot patch.
Each screen will do 2 cycles, more if the variation is over like 5-10% on the 2 runs, but I still have no idea what level on consistency I'll get.
First run on the W21 finished after 8h20.
Edit 2nd run 8h21, pretty constant. I'll have the first TN run tomorrow morning.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
First run on the TN done, at 8h52. If I'm not mistaken in my math it means the new panel is only 6% less efficient than the stock one.
2nd run at 9h25, that makes it 11.5% less efficient now.
With that info, I'll do the 2nd TN run tonight and jump straight to the first W21 without cloned display tomorrow. Who knows, without display mirroring we might have a better runtime than the stock screen
Won't happend.
Edit : That might not be entirely accurate, as nitro's mod still installed, but no cables plugged in it. I have no idea what the idle power consumption on that thing is, but I'd guess pretty low.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
Advancements in Technology and manufacturing will hopefully correct this over time. One of the disadvantages of IPS screen technology as compared to TN and AMOLED is power consumption. A typical IPS screen requires 15 percent more power than TN. It also needs a strong backlight unlike an AMOLED display to improve screen clarity. This requirements results in higher power consumption and faster battery drainage.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
Seems it has improved quite a bit since that TN panel was made. 2nd run of the W21 without mirroring was 10h21. That would be a 9.9% better runtime than stock. I'll do one more control run on the TN panel. If it doesn't go over 9h35 I'll call it a day. Both my edp cables are buried behind glued screens, I won't be able to test the older LP125WF2-SPB3. But I really wanted to. If someone can get me that cable shipped to Canada in 3 days, I'll do it.
No news from the thinkwiki admin for my account after 7 days. I'll post it elsewhere if I don't have one next weekend.
I got a slab of HDPE to try to make a bezel holder for the mill, I'll try that in the next weeks.
Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
@boutch55555, what thickness double-sided tape are you using to keep the panel in? I'm using 1.5 mm foam tape and it seems like it's a little too thick. Putting the bezel on causes a fair amount of bleed.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
Weird, 1.5mm should not be enough. Is it affecting the whole screen or more one of bottom / top / sides ? What panel are you using ?
Don't have the exact thickness and can't find it online (3M 111c), I'll check it tonight. AFAIK it's pretty close to 1.5 mm. I used only one layer on the first panel (w03) but I'm pretty sure it holds mostly because of the pressure on the sides , not the adhesive. I had to use 2 layers on the w21 to get it at the correct height. If bleeding is at the top make sure the webcam cable isn't stuck going straight down, I had to remove some tape that held the 3 parts of the cable (thinklight, webcam and lid sensor) to flatten it and route it 1cm to the right before going down. I'll add a picture of that tonight. You can also check that the cuts on the 3 magnesium legs holding the top plastic part are deep enough and the 8 bezel clips that needed to be removed don't have leftovers still sticking out.

Re: WIP DIY x320, what I learned so far
Currently, I'm using the w03 model, transitioning to the w11 later next week. So the w21 is thinner? I wonder if the w11 is as well. I was getting bleed at the top and bottom mostly, probably because of cable routing, I'll watch for that on my next lid.
