quad core cpu for T430 suggestion

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Thu Aug 17, 2017 7:38 pm

has anybody used a lower end 3rd gen iseries quad core cpu in a T430? what model cpu would be best to be used in this model thinkpad? this one has the i5-3210M from the factory but what would be a good 3rd gen iseries quad core cpu to us in this machine that would not really overheat or do anything weird to the machine? I use the 90W adapter with all of my machines so that shouldn't be a problem.....

The usual recommendations are 35w TDP quad cores like i7-3632QM and i7-3612QM.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

any i5 quad core cpu with a 35W TDP that would be a good fit for this machine?

If you buy those CPUs, BUY IT IN CHINA IF POSSIBLE! I bought one i7-3720qm CPU in taobao for just ¥700! Yes its one of the last stages of beta units which I forgot which one it was, but it works awesomely in my T530! If you look on eBay those things typically sell for $200+! As for tdp, it's not much of a deal as long as you have your heatsink and thermal paste hooked up properly and clean. it's not much higher than the 2nd gen CPU (i5-2520m) it came with anyways.

Ah... No quad core mobile i5 That's ok... Might see if I can win a bid on an i7-3632 or is there a better option that won't stress the t430 out too much

i is the inexpensive version or base model of the laptop. Usually comes with low specs and/or integrated graphics, though for my T530i it can still end up having i7-3720QM, NVS 5400M, 16GB RAM.
u is the ultra portable version of the laptop. It is thin, no DVD drive, no CPU upgradability, worse heat dissipation, overall not as modular as the regular T430 computer (HDD, WLAN, RAM and battery are removable, but not as easily accessible)
s is generally more powerful than the rest of the series, though you can easily upgrade a T430i into T430s by yourself as long as you get the NVidia motherboard.

So that makes the t430u like the t440s, the t430 like the t440 and the t430s like the t440p? What one has the most performance most upgradable (including CPU) and is the thickest laptop? The t430 or t430s?

Oops I think T430s is another slim down version of T430, as the graphics chip is certainly weaker. So at this point since there isn't any p in T430 series, go for the T430.
However, I strongly recommend the bigger brother T530 if you are fine with the slight bigger size and heavier body, because:
1. T530 can take good FHD panels. There are posts all over the places about ppl complaining the crappy screen options for the 14" counterparts.
2. T530 can take quad core i7, while that will burn the systemboard of T430 if you do the same.

So yea, if you really want T430, go for T430. Otherwise get T530 which should be around the same price anyways at almost 5 years after its introduction.

Using this old comment just to ask, has anyone here upgraded T430 with an i7-3612QM?

I'm quite happy with my T430 (apart from a couple of minor gripes) the way it is, however I just happen to have an i7-3612QM lying around. (It's in a Dell Inspiron 5520 laptop which got bricked by a perfectly innocent BIOS update, even recommended as "critical" by Dell Support Assistant... lol.)

Anyway, I'll see for myself how it is when I get around to doing it, but it'd be interesting to hear other people's experiences or advice...

OK. So, I've upgraded the CPU today (as mentioned above). It's been uneventful, everything works normally. The only "problem" I got is that the ThinkPad complained about the AC Adapter (65W - it wasn't powerful enough, and it wouldn't charge the battery any longer.) So I switched it to 90W, and it's all working fine.

CPU temperatures are a bit lower than when T430 had the i5 CPU - but that's probably got something to do with blowing out the dust + fresh thermal paste. :D Typically, temps are in the high 40s (Celsius), or mid-50s when I watch YouTube videos in HD. This is all on the Smart Mode 1 of the ThinkPad Fan Control, which means the fan is not blowing. On Smart Mode 2 it drops back into the 40s (or even the high 30s).

(Continued from above)
The CPU Mark (in Passmark) my T430 got before the "transplant surgery" was 4516 and 7070 with the "new" CPU. (For my other ThinkPads CPU Mark is as follows: Yoga 260 = 3844 and T400 = 1600).
