X61 fan replacement

The fan on my X61 is pretty noisy and I'm thinking of replacing it.

Looking on Ebay there are tons of fans - https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... +fan&rt=nc

how do I go about choosing one? I presume there is no reason to replace the heatsink....

Instead of posting all these useless questions, methinks it is high time that you download, read and follow the HMM for every IBM/Lenovo laptop that you have.

I'm sure there are several different fans which can be used with an X61. I was hoping that someone could recommend one, one which is as quiet as possible.

The problem is, the X61 has two heatsink designs, having different (and physically incompatible) fans, but sharing the same FRU number (42X3805), unfortunately.

Here's a picture of some X61/s heatsinks. The two heatsinks on the right are for the X61.

It's easy to notice that their fans are completely different, which means you have to check which type is installed in your X61.

Yes you can. That fan is fixed to the heatsink with screws. You'd need a #0 or #00 Philips screwdriver IIRC.
