So Who Actually Ordered?

#1 Post by unix_joe » Sat Oct 07, 2017 3:16 pm

Has anybody here actually ordered the T25?

I went back and forth on it for a couple of days. The screen was a tad disappointing, but the keyboard won me over. I can have a brand new machine with the classic keyboard. That's the first time I've been able to make that claim since early 2012.

Estimated ship date is 17 October. That's extremely disappointing. I was hoping to have it in my hands by this time next week, when I'll be back in NC for a few days.

The first order of business will be to cover up those atrocious webcams. Maybe some black cardstock? I'll also try a spare 16GB SODIMM to bump it to 32GB, and see if my OpenBSD installation runs on it.

A small cut square of electrical tape works wonders for covering cameras. You can hardly tell it's there.

After I cut through all the marketing smoke, I just saw a regular no-good thin laptop with -U CPU with a surprisingly good keyboard, nothing else. So; no, I didn't order.

Congrats on your purchase! Do you remember what the estimated ship date was? My date is ten days out.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that a machine which was planned for over two years, to be released in a very low, fixed quantity, and with no customization options at all, would take ten days to ship. To an address two counties away in North Carolina.

Hi theterminator93,

Are you usually using Windows 7?
*IF* by chance you try to install Win7 Pro onto TP25, please do let us know how it works out!

We also are (trying) to figure out if TP25 can run under Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, especially for the 7-row keyboard and USB-C port...
(We anticipate the fingerprint reader may not work under Win7 due to no Win7 driver; our own experience with X1 Carbon Generation 4 (made in 2nd half of 2016) used a new fingerprint [which looked just like the one in TP25] which had no Win7 support... but we don't use our fingerprint reader, so nothing lost!)

[Edit: Windows 7 does not support USB-C ports. Only Windows 10 and later OS's support USB-C ]

I placed my order at about 10:30 AM local time (same time zone as the warehouse it shipped from) and I got a shipping notice email that evening at about 9 PM. It was delivered two days later. The build date on the unit is 09/17.

Well... It's a Kaby Lake CPU so there's no official support for Windows 7 on the hardware. :(

I was (well, and still am) much the same way; not a fan of 10. But the longer I march on in the IT environment the more I realize we can't keep 7 forever, and 10 won't be going away. So I at least need to know how to use it and feel comfortable with it from a professional standpoint. So on these grounds I'm almost forcing myself to use it since for now, I've got plenty of Windows 7 hardware running well and this machine to retreat to if I want.

There may be a way to hack it in, but for the time being I'm not certain I'm ready (or willing) to undertake the adventure. From what I can see at the moment there's no recovery partition or options on the unit. I should probably create a backup image of it today before I get too many more customizations of my own on it, in case I need to restore it later. There isn't much Lenovo software on it aside from the control center app and a special TP25 wallpaper, so it seems. Fortunately even if I did create an image of it now, the extras of my own additions would be simple things like runtimes, web browsers, media players etc...

Hi theterminator93,
OK, noted Kaby Lake CPU so no Win7 support (and almost definitely no Windows Update either).
As such, please do not try to install Win7 on your TP25 !
Kind regards,

I was on the Lenovo site last night looking at the P71, but I could not find the TP25 anywhere on the site and a search of the site turned up nothing.

Does someone have a link to the page at Lenovo with this system?

TP25 is listed under the T-Series ThinkPads.
Our region still did not offer TP25 for sale yet :(

Thanks.

I didn't realize it came with only the 14" screen. I'll hold out for the inevitable 15.6" version. I hope so anyway.

I’ve canceled my order. My decision to purchase was largely influenced by the estimated 2-3 business day arrival time, which lined up perfectly with my next trip home. Ten days just to ship means that I won’t realistically see the laptop until early next year, based on my upcoming itinerary.

I still don’t understand how, with two years lead time, no customization options and a very limited run, that the full batch of 5,625 machines weren’t ready to slap a label on and ship immediately. This rollout reminds me of the botched BlackBerry KeyOne release from early summer.

I ordered; I am not home; I won't see it until January; I still ordered. I am stoked! Especially by theterminator93's report of the keyboard!

Care to tell us whether it came with a WWAN card? Is it really single module 16GB? Finally, do you have a 45W charger at hand and could you try whether it keeps the lights on at least even if not charging the battery? Thanks!

I tried it with a 45W adapter that came with an E570 at one of my clients this morning, it ran fine when I booted it up. It had a full charge at the time though so I can't elaborate beyond that.

Based on what's in Device Manager, it has an Intel 8265 dual band AC card as well as NFC, but I don't see any WWAN devices listed.

It also appears that I have a 3 year warranty which came with it standard. Going to see if I can get the recovery media sent out (edit: 2 minutes in chat and a USB key is on its way!). I also created a CloneZilla image just in case, although I have already installed some programs. :)

It discharges the internal battery first. I would rather it discharge the removable battery first. Gonna need to look into seeing if I can control that... Battery life so far has been superb as well. I was working on some things in Photoshop last night for about 3 hours and ran it down to 75%.

The touchscreen finish matches what I'd expect from any other ThinkPad. If I didn't know beforehand it was a touchscreen, I would have never suspected. There's also a built in fn/ctrl key swap option in BIOS, as well as a sticky-fn-key option too.

I read about it a bit just now, and my understanding that it is not by design. The external should discharge first. However, some BIOS versions for some machines have a bug where the internal discharges first. Another however, it is said that it only discharges it down to 5% before switching to external, so you still have some juice to swap external batteries.

In any case, this is something that can and will be fixed with a BIOS update, once someone brings it to Lenovo's attention.

Which is interesting, because I checked and found that there was a BIOS update available as soon as I unpacked it. Which has since been applied. Hmm. :?

I ordered one of the 8 that arrived in the Nordic.
Not what I wanted exactly, but finally a chance to get a modern laptop with a real keyboard.
(Would have loved a real screen (wqhd+ and preferably 3:2), and connectors on the backside)

I got a bad feeling when you wrote that it would be the same performance as a t420 (as I'm replacing my t430s-classic-keyboard-mod) so I did some googling:
CPU 20% faster overall,
10-15% faster integer speed,
30% faster floating point.
at 15W instead of 35!
Which gives a 20% increase of speed at less than half the power draw.

And.... they seem to be sold out (or at least out of stock in US and CA).
Still took 'em 4 days to sell a measly 5000!

It did run out yesterday at first you could get to the cart and complained there later you couldn't even get to the cart https://photos.app.goo.gl/ASH7muddxiK5op892

Today it's back because they cancelled a ton of discount orders , reddit is full of it and yes , mine as well. I reordered real darn quick at full price but https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... t_ack_for/ says they cancelled their second order. I will call lenovo in 4.5 hours when they reopen for a real friendly chat. While some might have used the IBM EPP portal in Canada with the not-at-all-secret password without having a right to it, I have a relative who is working at IBM and he is not a janitor but a Distinguished Engineer, FFS.

How does the W530 maxed out do?
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Are you aware of fact that Superposition benchmark mentioned by Olangu was created to analyze video cards performance not the overall computing power? Since when do we use office computers as an gaming rigs?
Extreme performance and stability test for PC hardware: video card, power supply, cooling system. Check your rig in stock and overclocking modes with real-life load! Also includes interactive experience in a beautiful, detailed environment.
P70 / W530 / W700 and 30 more

It's quite safe to say that the values I posted earlier hold up pretty well.
So it's a 15-30% increase in computing power (CPU)
and a 161% increase in the performance of the GPU.

The additional performance increase is from faster ssd and ram.

The message I'm trying to pass on is that the TP25 is faster in every aspect compared to the xx20 (or modded xx30) computers most of us is using. Sure it set me back $3k to get it with a docking station. But I have the money to signal to Lenovo that we need computers with useful keyboards.

That said, If I could get a wqhd mod for my t430s I would probably stick with it...
