Tin foil in IPS screen replacement (LP125WH2-SLT1)
Hello, my name is Diego and I am from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I recently joined the forum and I bought a beautiful x230 weeks ago with a TN panel.
Buy an IPS panel, allegedly LP125WH2-SLT1, in Aliexpress (rookie error). The panel has aluminum foil (I suppose it's aluminum, the seller told me it's tinfoil) stuck in the circuit board section, close to where the 40 pin connector is.

Also notice that there is a black tape attached to the edges.

My question is this: for safety I should remove the aluminum before testing the screen?
I have serious doubts that it is the model that I ordered since the weight exceeds 240 grams (although the panel is thin, has 3 mm.). The seller told me that the difference in weight is because of the tin paper !!!

Honestly, if it seems legit, just test it outside of the machine. I would be cautious with an AliExpress screen, but it isn't AliBaba screen so you have slightly less worry. If it was Alibaba, I would call Homeland Security to take it away
. Don't take it off. It is likely connected to ground and acts as a protective layer. Kind of like an anti-static bag. I wouldn't remove it on risk of shorting out the PCB underneath or damaging it. I pressed on one too hard and purple lines showed up uninvited. Be careful, and if you see the white magic smoke genie escaping, pull the power cord immediately. DO NOT TEST WITH THE BATTERY PLUGGED IN!! If you do, you will not have easy control over the power going into the machine.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Thanks for the reply
Tin paper is glued to the top of the circuit board cover (I do not know what material it is, but it is the one seen on most of the spare screens). So the circuit is not covered only with this paper, so I asked, I had doubts that this paper short circuit with some other component.
Is it safer to test with electric current instead of placing the battery?
I saw these videos to guide me and they all use battery to test

I also asked the seller (Kevin Trade Shop) if I should remove the paper to install the screen.

This is the respond from the seller
"Don't touch the tin foil.Tin foil is for better protection against static electricity".

The first 2 pictures are fine, that 'tinfoil' needs to be there.
But the other pictures with tape look like the screen has been tampered with.
Those LCDs are often used in Lenovo Twist S230U, where most of them also have a touchpanel.
They'd look like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/122667202512
Your screen looks like they removed the touchpanel and 'covered up' the mess it left behind.
I would return it for exchange or refund.

Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

Re: Tin foil in IPS screen replacement (LP125WH2-SLT1)
Sadly, I had to use the notebook to travel and work these days and I could not get to test the screen I bought before the time required by Aliexpress to confirm the reception of the product.
Today at the end of the day I took some time to test the screen:
It works (and I hope it keeps running) but as I suspected, it is not an SLT1 model. Both AIDA64 and MonInfo show the display model: SLB3. Which coincides with the weight of the product.

The seller is called Kevin Trade Shop, has good ratings in Aliexpress, but again as in other cases, they sell SLB3 screens as SLT1.
The quality of the screen is good although I did not have much time to try it. Will have to see how it behaves over time

Doh! I ordered from the same seller 5 days before you posted this. I ended up getting the same thing, except my panel has a single stuck/dead pixel in the top left corner. It could have been worse though. Been seeing a lot of people order an SLT1, and get an SLB1 instead.muchosmitos wrote: ↑Tue Oct 24, 2017 12:57 amSadly, I had to use the notebook to travel and work these days and I could not get to test the screen I bought before the time required by Aliexpress to confirm the reception of the product.
