CPU choice for T440p
CPU choice for T440p
I'm at the point where can buy myself a new CPU but need advice on what to choose... I've got the i5-4300m now and require I go up to a quad core CPU for light gaming with older games... I was thinking of going up to to the i7-4702MQ but is this a good choice? I choose it for it's low TDP to not only to get better battery life but to keep the heat down and playing older games I don't need a very powerful CPU....
i'd also like to be able to run some VM's from time to time and require a cpu that allows me to use VM's
what can you recommend?

Re: CPU choice for T440p
Have you tried running the games you want to play with your current CPU?
The T440p tends to run hot on Quad i7's, I own one with the 4710MQ and I have to use it on battery mode to avoid uncomfortable temperatures, also the SSD is placed on the Ultrabay since the left side of the machine tends to get hotter.
On paper it should be a good choice since you're not upping the TDP.

I have not run any games with my current CPU as I need to change out my motherboard but if they run good I won't bother getting a new CPU

Any quad-core i7 will throttle, I use i7-4810MQ, my buddy use i7-4702MQ.

Re: CPU choice for T440p
I'm just about maxing out the i5-4300m now plus I'd like to get an 8gb stick of ram to increase the ram to 12 GB as that's just about maxed out as well... Been testing out my games and find that I'm playable now at around 40 FPS average (35-50 FPS normally) I'm still trying to see if more cores vs higher clock speed is better because I'll get a faster i5 if that's better

i've narrowed down to these 3 choices
i7-4610M
i7-4702MQ
i7-4712MQ
what one do you think would be the best for gaming?

Re: CPU choice for T440p
Maybe something like this will help on throttling?
I use it to get the CPU-temp down on my x230 when playing CS:GO. It takes the temp down from high 80's to low 70's. It does make some noise, but I have headphones on when playing:

Re: CPU choice for T440p
I use TPFanControl and always run my fan at around 4500RPM when gaming and never dip lower than about 35 FPS but i'm maxed out and need to change my cpuHurstbridge wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2017 2:33 amMaybe something like this will help on throttling?

Re: CPU choice for T440p
Ah, yeah, so do I as well. I run TPfancontrol on max when I'm playing CS:GO on the i7-3520m on my x230, which is around 5400rpm. The external fan then takes it down another 15C down.
