TP X300 - help needed - scroll in win10?

#1 Post by Insomniac1971 » Thu Oct 26, 2017 2:03 pm

Hi folks, I'm back with an old problem - this concern my X300 with ALPS Ultranav touchpad/trackpoint and scroll in win10.

Link to the R500 page
viewtopic.php?f=73&t=118680&p=790780#p790780

It's the excact same problem I had with my R500: Touchpad scroll works in Internet Explorer, Firefox, File Explorer, Device manager, Help, Services.msc and some other places, but it does not work in Start menu or any menu under system, Control panel, Edge or Windows Store - no matter what I have tried it simply will not Scroll - There is no doubt in my mind that this a BUG in registry or the interface - I have tried to find the problem in registry but came up empty.

I tried contacting MS support about this but they indian guys kept on giving me the runaround and asking me to install newest drivers - I started out telling them that I had the newest ALPS drivers from 2009 for windows 7 - so again where they answer without reading the full question(they do that alot).

I have tried various forums including Tenforums, sevenforums, Lenovo - I tried drivers from Toshiba, Dell, other Thinkpad models - any laptop with similar ALPS touchpad.

As I stated in the R500 thread, I'm guessing that the problem lies in the user interface and not the driver(otherwise it would not work at all) and because most of the user interface windows like Store and Control panel and Start menu is linked to Edge and that is the one having the bug. I just can't seem to get MS interested in fixing this bug together with me or all the other people with the same problem (not only thinkpad owners).

Hope someone can answer this cause it driving me nuts!

Touchpad/Trackpoint: ALPS UltraNav 2 - I have the newest driver from lenovo an ALPS don't have driver download available. But can't see how its a driver issue when it works in Device manager and the other places.

With kind regards

JBJ
Scrolling right now in Firefox - If i go to Start, Edge or Store, its not working.

Your only solution may be to source a Synaptics touchpad and install that in place of the ALPS. Or somehow trick the ALPS into using the drivers from a different manufactured touchpad.

The synaptics touchpad will not fit - so that is not an option.

I'm going to sell my X300 thats why I'm even trying to use windows 10 on it, personally i prefer linux on my systems, but buyers will want windows not linux.

As I wrote earlier, I already tried all the drivers I could find on the net, both series 7 from the oldest to the newest and series 8 oldest to newest(unfortunately series 8 driver disables touchpad and trackpoint after restart, so you have to navigate by keyboard to device manager and roll back the driver to the series 7 one).

What I need is for someone who has this working on their thinkpad, to point me to the driver they use so I can download it and try it out:)

Or if there exist some reghacks that can fix this issue.

Once you have installed the working driver, to stop the abominable W10 from updating that driver, go here:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/take-back- ... indows-10/ and scroll down to Local Group Policy Editor; follow instructions.

Then get an X300 or X301 palmrest that does have the Synaptics touchpad, or hack in the touchpad. The ALPS is unmanageable and it's Microsoft's fault.

TP fanatic - I'm not going to replace the touchpad with a synaptics one, the touchpad works just fine under Win7 and Ubuntu with scroll and everything else - I know some of you have had problems with touchpad jumping around, but mine works - the only problem with it is the scroll function in Modern UI.

RealBlackStuff - there is, currently, no newer windows 7 driver and the one installed is the latest one for windows 7 and X300 so for now, there is no problem about windows updating the driver to a useless one - the problem is that the driver don't seem to work with Modern UI(works fine everywhere else).

Maybe(speculation on my part), when the driver was made "back in the day", Modern UI was not an option(as windows vista or 7 don't use that) and nobody thought this driver would ever be used in windows 8-10. But I do see your point of locking the update to not update driver(if there ever is going to be an updated one) - once I get it working(if ever).

What is needed is a driver that work with modern UI, maybe not one made for the X300 or windows 7, but for another model with the same ALPS touchpad - so either one made for windows 8(8.1) or one directly made for windows 10.

Lenovo has more than once re-used the touchpad in other models, I just can't find which model - it's easy to find models with Ultranav but some are synaptics and some are ALPS, Lenovo don't specify which HW version or REV. it is, or even if it's one with updated firmware or even if there is firmware(for another model) that might work with the X300's touchpad - that is only something I can find here from other users and people more skilled than me in Thinkpads.

Maybe some other people has found some way in registry to enable the features that doesn't work - I'm just not skilled enough to find the problem there, and believe me I have tried looking line for line and looking them up on the net, but couldn't find a solution to get it to scroll in the Modern UI parts.

I tried various tricks to enable extra features of alternative drivers from other manufacturers like Dell, Toshiba but never got the scroll working and those drivers caused various other problems like freezeups so I went back to the original driver.

The windows 8 and 10 drivers for other models, that I have found on Lenovo's homepage disables the touchpad upon restart. I haven't found a working one yet, maybe someone else have?

Has anyone with the ALPS touchpad got the scroll working in windows 10?

I can live with having to hold down left mouse button with the pointer on the slider in the right side and then use the touchpad to move the page down, by dragging it, but it's stupid that it doesn't work as it should and bug's the h.ll out of me because this is the only thing I have found not working - everything else just work.

Other people have had wifi, sound, bluetooth and other HW problems - But I used the newest ISO 1607 from MS homepage + plus got a 4GB update right after install and have not had those problems. Even got Troubadix's fancontrol to work.

It it were me (unless I'd find someone that got W10 working on an X300), I'd dump that POS W10.
I find W10 the most obnoxious OS I have ever come across! YMMV.

PS: as this is not an X300 problem, I moved the thread to the W10 forum.

I have my OS rule(for myself)

W8/8.1/10 ONLY for xx40 and newer
W7 for x60 to xx30, but I will occasionally install on newer machines.
XP for P4/P-M machines
2000 for P3
98 for P2
95 for DX2/50 - P-MMX
3.11/DOS for all prior.

I tend to characterize the latest hardware and software as the latest Backdoors and Malware.

But maybe that's just me.

I totally agree with you about W10 being the worst POS since ME and VISTA - But as I want to sell this machine, I need it to work, nobody want to buy it with linux on it.

When I used it myself I had Peach OSI 16.04 64bit on it and it worked like a charm, and only took up 13GB fully installed with Libreoffice and everything. The only thing I needed to tinker with were thinkpad fan control, but I got that working too.

You and I discussed how to get an bigger SSD in this one, remember:)

I thought you are trying to sell it in Windows 10? That is why you should replace it because the Synaptics works in 10.

You have until the end of 2017 to play with 'free' W10: http://www.zdnet.com/article/hands-on-w ... eal-world/
Install the most basic OS version on it from any Lenovo W7 recovery set, then follow the link and keep your fingers crossed.

I already have win10 on it fully registered and clean install.

Only thing not working is the scroll in modern UI.

I ended up installing Peach OSI on it instead - the continuous change of Win10 is not my cup of tea. In Peach scroll works in all programs.

I'm using the X300 as my own personal laptop and for everything that I did before on my T61, R500 and T500 - Using linux programs(much better than win versions) for my work. Everything works, some needed some modifications but I don't have problem now. Currently running Peach OSI 16.04 LTS 64Bit. Upgraded the X300 to 160GB SSD and 4GB Ram.
