i7 3rd Generation for T520

#1 Post by MikalE » Fri Dec 01, 2017 4:58 pm

I just finished wading through ten pages of a search for this and came up with nothing. I know there is a thread out there discussing a 3rd generation i7 QC swap in a T520 series Thinkpad but I can't find it.

Does anyone have a list of compatible Sandy Bridge 3rd Gen i7 QC processors that will operate in the T520?

Any strange BIOS mods I need to know about or will one of these boot right up and auto-load the drivers?

Sandy Bridge isn't 3rd gen, it's 2nd gen.

If you're interested in Sandy Bridge quad core mobile CPUs for the T520, all of them should work with the latest BIOS.

If you're interested in Ivy Bridge 3rd gen CPUs, then you're going to need to flash Coreboot with a chip flasher.

I just realized I was looking at desktop packages, but even though they are Sandy Bridge processors they use a different incompatible socket.

'Nuff said on this subject I guess. That's out.

Correct; you need the mobile version of the CPU, which is compatible with the FCPGA988 socket,

For what it's worth, I have tested the following 3rd generation chips in a T420:
Each processor runs normally, as far as I can tell:
i5-3210M
i7-3610QM
i7-3612QM
i7-3630QM

The 'Ivy Bridge T520' thread is here:

Thanks for the link so I could read up on that. I didn't think I was crazy.

That procedure is a little above my pay grade. I would end up bricking my machine. I'm more of a hardware type person and would have to leave the programming manipulation to someone else.

You say you have tested those 3rd generation CPU'S in a T420. I take it that is after flashing Coreboot, correct?

Has anyone you have heard of tried this with a T520? Would there be any logical or electrical differences in using a T520 in the same way a T420 was used? Could there be additional video problems other than those encountered using the T420 as a testbed because of the different size screens?
