Rumoured new machines :

• Thinkpad X1 Tablet and yoga Generation 3
• Thinkpad X1 Carbon Generation 6
• Thinkpad X280 (Complete redesign) and new to the X-Series:
• Thinkpad X380 Yoga
• Thinkpad L380 and a new 13-inch Thinkpad L380 Yoga Convertible
• Thinkpad L480 and L580
• Thinkpad T480s (Complete redesign), Thinkpad T480 and T580 (with Nvidia GeForce MX150)
• A new 11 inch Yoga with Intel's new Gemini Lake-Atom generation is also planned
• Last but not least the fifth generation Thinkpad 11e

ThinkPad 13 seems to be replaced by L380. Othwerwise I don't expect anything positive. Just ordinary laptops similar to HP, Dell, Acer ... no single attempt to be the ThinkPad.

I could hold out for a machine that will never happen again (7-row, 4:3 screen, etc.)... but if I'm not going to do that, the current and upcoming lineups both look fine.

I'm not really a fan of the X280 from an industrial design standpoint, but spec-wise it's not bad. I'm still probably gonna go with an X270 or A275 though since saving a few bucks matters more than having the latest toy. But I can't see any real problems with the X280.

My only complaint is that the whole lineup is just... cluttered. Like, yeah us nerds can figure it out, but holy hell do they have a ton of options nowadays. Not like the days of just the T, X, and R... Oh well. "MBAs gonna MBA" I guess.

Do not buy any X series if the memory is only 1 slot with no onboard memory. This will limit to single channel mode, needs dual channel mode (either onboard memory *with* memory slot memory module installed also, or two slots memory), to help with integrated GPU performance (important) and some people need much more memory as well.

New docking stations again. Side docking port instead of bottom docking port. Now I'm even happier that the TP25 was based off the older models. :)

I'm glad the industry is utilizing USB-C as a charging port. The next step would be having full compatibility from other chargers, unless they have lower wattage than needed.
As far as docks go, I'm not sure how long Lenovo will be making them.
Seeing how eGPUs are getting nice cases with USB ports, I wonder if Lenovo will ever produce one to compliment a future T-Series.

Yes Lenovo are still producing the same crap we don't want especially in keyboards and display ratios.

But with the latest kernel exploits the latest CPUs may still be vulnerable despite the Intel microcode updates.

With this speculation buying a new PC today might not be the smartest move. I think Intel will address these exploits properly in future design.

The paragraph about Dolby Vision HDR reminds terrible Dell's Dynamic Backlight Control (you can't turn off) users hated too much that Dell had to release a BIOS update to get rid of it :(

On the other hand Lenovo finally confirmed that 16:9 laptop is just overpriced video player :D

Hmm, pretty boring, the only new-look machine was the X280. No sign of the (presumably somewhat expensively) developed T25 keyboard. Wouldn't have thought it would cost much to have that as an option on a couple of models, just keyboard and palmrest / keyboard surround and maybe a bit of firmware. Would have differentiated Thinkpads from all the other laptops and generated a bit of goodwill / publicity. I guess it was always a slim chance, knowing Lenovo. There's always next year, when the slim-bezeled 13" X390 will have it as an option ... yeah right ! Better fix my (wobbly-hinged) T410s.

T480 is shaping up to be a great machine. If it could be fitted with the T25 keyboard+bezel combo, it would be an instant-buy...

Since the T480 is largely the same as the T470, it should be possible. But then the question remains of the keyboard will work and if not, how you will get it working.

The 2018 lineup so far (P series is still missing and won't be released until early Summer apparently) looks good. Its great that Lenovo finally will offer brighter screen options for the X1 models, the X1 Tablet now finally makes sense as a product with the much bigger 3:2 screen and full-size keyboard and as mentioned, the T480 seems like a topseller in the making. T480s is also a good update of the T460s/T470s (mainly because of the bigger battery).

I'm not sure what the setup in the X280 is. I would assume that if it's on-board then it would be dual-channel because... well, why would it not be? But even if it's not, those of us with workloads that aren't particularly RAM-bound (read: not GPU-bound, mostly IO-bound) it's not the end of the world.

Most of my work nowadays is dev, and even then full compiles aren't *that* much of my runtime. So to be perfectly honest I'm not sure I'd be able to tell a difference between single and dual channel in my work.

CPU, however, I absolutely can tell a difference. More L1/L2/L3 or better eviction algos definitely benefit the sort of work that I do, so new CPUs are always a welcome upgrade.

If anyone peruse the notebookcheck website for awhile, be noted that the performance figures for majority of notebooks is in single channel mode If they have either soldered down memory plus a empty memory slot or two memory slots with one memory filled. They should do the both tests with single channel and dual channel mode. This is vital to integrated GPU overall performance. Also a notebook have 4GB for windows 7, 8.x or 10, this will also impact the OS performance badly.

For some notebooks with soldered down memory only, this takes some investigation to see if this is actual dual channel mode.
Best examples are many chromebooks ships with 2GB or 4GB (2GB is 4 chips with 4 solder pads (single channel) or all 8 chips soldered for 4GB in use (dual channel) how I know because I looked up on memory chip part number. And DDR3L 2GB does exist as 1Rx16 4 chips modules. See this link:

How is the performance with asymmetric dual channel (two sticks of different sizes)?

Re: asymmetric dual channel.

Not recommended. OS fills the memory upwards then you are now stuck with single channel often especially with base soldered 4GB plus 8GB module. Win 7 thru 10 idles around 4-5GB in use with a browser open with a tab or few in 8GB memory size (dual channel) then switches over asymmetric dual channel as memory fills up more than 8GB in size on a 12GB machine. Also price of extra 8GB module to have matched 16GB set over just purchasing one 8GB module just sake of saving some money kind of foolish idea and problem finding matching memory to the now then old half once you wanted 8GB more yet purchasing two matched 8GB memory in first place is not too expensive in short and long term and peace of mind on reliability and best performance.

Otherwise for short term fix, just buy extra 4GB first matched if possible to the current 2 slot computer with 1 4GB module installed for now then purchase matched set of 16GB memory module later on.

Sometimes extra memory helps to fix some software, I seen this happen with 8GB on Steam breaking sometimes on windows startup, going to 16GB fixed that perfectly.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Well, I have a 16GB module in my TP25; so I would need another 16GB to have it symmetric dual channel. Kinda pricey... Replacing the 1x16GB with 2x8GB is not cheaper either.

I looked into this long ago, before i bought my T61. If i understood what i read then correctly, it's like this: if you have one 16 GB module, and add an 8 GB module, Intel chipsets are able to operate 8 GB of the 16 GB module and the 8 GB module in dual channel mode. The other 8 GB of the 16 GB module cannot utilize the advantage of dual channel in such a configuration.
