IPS display for the older T500 and W500 series

#1 Post by VarnTedra » Wed Jan 10, 2018 9:21 pm

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone on Earth (or even beyond) was or is working on a kit to put an IPS 1080p display into an old W or T 500, 510, 520, or 530. I know there are kits out there for installing IPS displays into a T420 or T430 and would love to have one for a W530. Those machines were the last ones with a nice, pleasant, and very welcomed center keyboard with no number pad to be found. I know this topic had been covered before but what wondering if any new developments had been made.

Thank you all

Welcome to the forum!

No IPS LCDs are to be found for *00 series, there's a LG one that fits T/W 510/20/30 and is FHD. A cable mod will likely be required.

What is the model for that? I remembered seeing a bunch of AUO panels but never seen a LG one before. You sure it is compatible with my T530 with proper EDID chip and stuff? The AUO ones aren't truly IPS Flexview, since their viewing angles can still suffer from extreme cases, unlike the UXGA panels I have.

A couple of members here have done that mod on their T/W 520 systems. I don't have a link handy but it's out there.

Nothing is really a FlexView apart from a FlexView, and these have been obsolete for a full decade now.

'FlexView' is just a brand that IBM and later Lenovo used to describe IPS displays. The Lenovo monitor INF file stilll describes every IPS display as 'FlexView' as far as I know.

Of course it's just a marketing term from many moons ago, but somehow when it's used even today I envision a 4:3 IPS display... :)

Was that LG display an IPS display? And what sort of cable mods will have to be made exactly?

Yes.

You need an extender from what I recall, the original cable is not long enough.

Some WUXGA TN panels for the T61/T500/W500 weren't that bad. Years ago I had a WUXGA T61p. The LCD failed, and I replaced it with a Sharp, that happened to be much better than the older one. Some time after that, I bought a W500, that I still use. This W500 came with an awful, dim WUXGA from Samsung, still worse than the LG my T61p had. I swapped it with the Sharp panel I've mounted in my T61p, and sold the T61p with the W500 Samsung LCD.

I think it's the Sharp LQ0DZA0043 WUXGA display. Still TN, but way better than the stock W500 WUXGA in terms of colour (once calibrated), contrast and brightness. If you find one of these at a good price, maybe you should give it a try.

Forget it, T/W 510/20/30 are 16:9. T/W 500 are 16:10. Even if you'd managed to build a modded cable, a T510 display would never fit in a T500.

The 16:10 display in 15.4" like T60/T61/W500/R500 is the Sharp lq154m1lw2a or lq154m1lw02

Assuming you buy a non-OEM 16:10 15" IPS display off Aliexpress, what's the relation of difficulty compared to just adapting a T510 display (the whole screen and case)?

It's smaller.
T500 has a 15.4" display in 16:10, while the T510 has a 15.6" display in 16:9.
According to my math, the chassis of a T500 only allows up to a 15" 16:9 display (and that is with ugly holes as your bezels).
Also you have to modify the EDID chip to make it accept any 16:9 resolutions (if not impossible).
Just stick with WUXGA (1920x1200) and call it a day. Plus you get 120 more rows of pixels if you use the stock WUXGA offering.

Besides the hassle or reprogramming the EDID, is there some innate limitation?

And for the chassis, couldn't the T510 monitor chassis be modified to house the T500? It would look absolutely ridiculous and be the epitome of "frankenpad," but if one is determined, life finds a way

Only asking out of curiosity. It seems completely impractical, but you never know.

Then you might as well get a dead T510 system and mod the T510 case to fit a T500 motherboard. The lid of these ThinkPads contain carbon fiber, which has the properties of glass (it shatters or creates super weak spots if you modify the shape yourself). Do not modify the lid unless you want your lid to have the strength of a piece of crisp.
