SOLVED: T61 won't work with the PCI-Express video in advanced dock

#1 Post by maxcreations » Mon Jan 08, 2018 5:47 am

Hello!

I have 14" T61 Frankenpad T8300/4Gb/X3100 in T60 case with the updated bios from this topic (bios version 专门网论坛_T61-BIOS from el-sahef post).
Also I have 14" T61 Lenovo T7500/4Gb/failure NVS140m with stock bios, Lenovo Advanced Dock 250310U with installed 1Gb HD5450 pci-e video.

The T61 with failure nvidia 140m boots fine in this dock 250310U with HD5450, while T61 Frankenpad won't start and only makes 1 long and 2 short beeps (that means problem with the video).
BIOS video setups are same on both laptops: video priority are set to the PCI-e option.

Does anyone have any suggestion?
Thanks in advance!

Please remove one of memory sticks and than try to boot with 2 GiG of RAM. This may solve your problem.

The problem is not related to the modules but poorly addressed TOLUD. This problem has been widely discussed on this forum, please check posts related to 2503 Adv.Dock. As far as I remember there's some kind of workaround but yet I cannot remind myself the solution of the problem.

If I remember properly, if you boot without being attached to the dock, then dock the system you can take advantage of the eGPU with 4+ GB RAM installed. It just won't boot when docked.

This is not entirely true. It depends on GPU chip series/family, and OS. It is even not always Nvidia/AMD related.

I could see chip/family affecting whether the system POSTs, but OS? There's no way the OS choice would cause a system to fail to power on past basic hardware checks done by BIOS.

Well I meant "take advantage of the eGPU with 4+ GB RAM installed". I have tried so far Geforce GT 640, GT 1030 and AMD RX 550. As long as you don't select them as a primary display adapter in BIOS settings, then there is no problem with booting the system - also with 8 GB of RAM installed. Problem is to be actually able to activate the GPU in the OS. Have had quite good results with GT 640 using both Windows 7 and Linux. RX 550 works almost OK, but it gets hot in the docking PCI-E slot, as there is not enough airflow there. RX 550 seems to be also more affected by the x1-bandwith than Geforce GT 640. Have had zero luck so far with GT 1030. All seems to be caused by TOLUD/DSDT limits set by BIOS - not enough virtual memory address space available to allocate all of GPU resources. For me it is still work in progress hobby-project. GT 1030 would be best overall, but GT 640 has worked best for me so far.
