X220: how do you tell if you have IPS or non-IPS screen?
how can one be sure the X220 they have has an IPS or non-IPS screen? I'd like to know what mine has and looking up by specs doesn't tell me if I have the IPS or non-IPS screen... how am I able to tell?

View the screen at extreme angles. There's a comparison between the X220's TN and IPS screens here.

Run some diagnostic software like HWinfo, and check the type under "display" tab. Retype it into google wieh "panelook", and voila!

Re: X220: how do you tell if you have IPS or non-IPS screen?
I hope this was a joke.
If a person can't tell a TN from an IPS with a naked eye using the simple test suggested above, they have absolutely no need to know whether it's a TN or IPS.
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), T490 (20N3), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG
X61 7673-V2V, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G, X32 (IPS Screen), A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

Re: X220: how do you tell if you have IPS or non-IPS screen?
If a person did not ever see an IPS panel, he may have difficulties - especially if there is AUO display inside.
Checking it with diagnostic tool changes the "I think" into "I know". And this is what OP asked for.
That's just my point of view

Did you check the comparison pictures in axul-delmeria's link? If someone can't determine after seeing those pictures, then they must be blind.
But I do understand your point of view. It makes sense. Even if you're blind you may want to know for sure (e.g., if you are selling/configuring a system for someone who can tell the difference and cares). So I have to concede that you are right, even if to me this seems akin to going to the manufacturer's specs to verify the color of your car, when the car is right in front of you.

Re: X220: how do you tell if you have IPS or non-IPS screen?
Well you know, I have too many times bought "IPS Dreamcolor panels in superb shape" that turned out to be a good TN with nice viewing angles when they arrived. If you have worked on IPS, I cant imagine not reckoning it at first sight, but we need to understand those who didntdr_st wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2018 3:15 amBut I do understand your point of view. Re: X220: how do you tell if you have IPS or non-IPS screen?
I bought an X220 yesterday. When the BIOS boot screen appeared, I immediately recognized that the display was somehow different from the X220 I already own, so I immediately asked the seller if it was IPS or not. He said he didn't know, so I moved the lid back and forth, and realized that yes, it was an IPS screen. Booting linux and running get-edid confirmed it, as it ID'd itself as LG125WH2-SLB1.
In other words, I've been staring at my X220's TN screen for so long (just over 3 years) that I can recognize an IPS screen just by seeing it for a few seconds.
Take note that it's my first time seeing an IPS X220.

To dr_st
But what does the manufacturer call the color of the car? Is it red, or maroon, or burgundy?
