T25 Frankenpad?

#1 Post by Wolfman_Jack » Sun Oct 29, 2017 9:25 pm

Has anyone yet figured out whether the upper from a T470 or T470s is swappable onto the T25 base?

I'm thinking about getting a non-touch FHD or WQHD options available on the T470/T470s.

T470s uses a different cable and is a different laptop design altogether.

I wound up answering my own question, so I thought I'd post an update in case anyone finds it useful.

I successfully "upgraded" my T25 to use the famed B140HAN01.3 LCD panel. I just had to get the non-touch LCD cable for the T470.

According to the T470 FRU BOM document, the FRUs for that cable are: 00UR481, 00UR482, 00UR483.

Brightness settings and everything else work as expected.

I also successfully installed Windows 7 x64 and can elaborate on that a bit if any other Luddites out there are interested.

Thank you for sharing this information. I am sure it will be useful to many. I imagine the B140HAN01.3 is brighter than the stock IVO LCD?

Personally, I prefer to run Win10 on a machine of this generation, but since may 'Luddites' as you point it out prefer Win7, I believe additional details would be greatly appreciated. :thumbs-UP:

Does replacing the screen void the warranty?

Yes, and quite thoroughly too.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

So if the laptop breaks just sneak the old screen back in.

How is the screen still holding up? I get my T25 soon and would love to know if it is worth it to break the warranty?

Is the B140HAN01.3 panel that good for a 14" display? I feel that I am not appreciating my modded T430s that much if this is true.

I would of though there were better color accurate panels by now.

@Saucey:
try calibrating it (this file is from V01_2, but should also work on V1_3): http://www.notebookcheck.net/uploads/tx ... AN01_2.icm

There's no real secret trick or anything, but I will put together a set of "tips-and-tricks" and post it in the T25-Retro Support sub-forum when I have the time.

If you know of a better one, I would hazard a guess that any 14" display will work. Some non-Lenovo ones might have screw hole alignment issues. FWIW, even though my B140HAN01.3 had the Lenovo FRU sticker on the back, its EDID is showing as AUO133D rather than LEN40A3 and yet the brightness controls work anyways.

Looks like the T480 is out now:

https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/t ... 2TP2TT4800

The dimensions are identical to the T470, I might bet that the T25 keyboard would be compatible. When they publish the T480 FRU BOM we can check if the T470 and T480 keyboards have the same FRU (but this would only be slightly indicative).

You get an 8th gen CPU and slightly faster RAM, while losing the nVIDIA GPU. "Worth it" is of course in the eye of the beholder.

So far no one even managed to demonstrate that the TP25 keyboard is compatible with T470, and you're talking about T480?

I guess I'm ambitious ;)

Have people demonstrated it's *not* compatible with the T470? I guess that would certainly be informative. But I also guess there might not be much incentive for someone to try it, unless they have both systems handy.

It definitely seems to me that the T470 and T25 are very similar systems. They share the same BIOS files for example. I was able to use the T470 3-pin LCD cable to get a non-touch panel working on my T25.

But point taken, I might be jumping-the-gun.

That is certainly ambitious already, but congratulations! I store my T25 in the box, and wash my hands before I use it. I don't want to get human on it
I have another 3 modern laptops laying around anyway ...

But, isn't the B140HAN01.3 quite old now? Why did you go with that one? I just recently put one of those in a T430. I think even the B140HAN01.8 is out now? Surely the T25 would be compatible?

Regardless, WQHD is one of the options I wish they offered with the T25. I may consider trying it in a few years when it's out of warranty. I assume it should work with the proper cable? It was an option on the T470? I hate touchscreens. I even have a BlackBerry Key2. Even worse than non-tactile interfaces are fingerprints all over a screen :BAAAD!:

Hello,
here in Holland i do also have a T25.
Very cool laptop, but the screen brightness is too low (off course).
What is the best (and compatible) LCD panel in 2020 for the T25.

Maximum solution for me : 500 Nits with touch.
Other options are also good for me.

Thx
