Wi-Fi card recommendation for Frankie

#1 Post by positive » Thu Feb 15, 2018 7:43 pm

Hi All,

Which Wi-Fi card would you recommend for the best performance in a Whitelist removed T601?

Thanks

Intel 7260 HMW gets my vote!

AC speed +Bluetooth 4.

I have a half-dozen of them in various units, including my T601F. They work great :D

Spec sheet:

Thank you. Do I need to cut pin 51, or alter it in any way? I think I read somewhere that this was necessary in an x220, but not sure about the T601f

I started with the Thinkpads in the T21 era. That said I have consistently had the best luck with Atheros based WiFi cards. Nothing wrong with the Intel or Broadcom, but I have always had stronger signal, and easier configuration with the Atheros. In sketchy areas, it seems to me the A will always pick a signal out of the weeds and lock it in.

YMMV

Every Frankie that left my house was equipped with the dual-band Atheros AR9380 (a.k.a. Apple Airport Extreme AR5BXB112).
Unbeatable in quality!
Admitted, that was before AC cards came into fashion.

So what would be the AC choice to replace your Atheros AR9380, that would also work in our older Thinkpads?
Z61p x3 (C2D T7600, 3GB, 500GB SSD, BCM70015, Advanced Dock x1, Mini Dock x2)
W520 (C2Q i7-2720QM, 8GB, 60GB SSD)
X61 (C2D T7500, 3GB, 250GB SSD, BCM70015)
X61s (2GB, 120GB SSD)
T43p (P M 760, 2GB, IBM Port Replicator II, 128GB SSD)
G41 (P4 3.46GHz, 2GB, 128GB SSD)

Positive, I taped pin 51 for the x220 and removed the original Bluetooth, so it runs BT4 from the 7260.

Never did it with the T601F though, oversight on my part. Next time I have to open it up for anything, it goes on the list of Things-To-Do!

Regards.

I like the Intel AC 7260 HMW and HMWG.R half cards in our T61p and X61 laptops.
