Confirming T61p FX570 Heatsink 42W2028 fits Frankenpad?

#1 Post by xsixt » Thu Feb 15, 2018 10:39 pm

This is the brilliant go to thread about building a frankenpad, where the OP suggests builds a machine with 42W2028 T61p FX570 heatsink.

However someone in the thread claims its a poor fit. Can someone confirm or deny?

Thanks in advance.

It needs only some super-basic extremely easy mod. Cutting 3 or 4 gills out of it, and that's it. Or even pulling them out.
If swapping to fx570m try to hunt for a 3-heatpipe heatsink (unless this is exactly what you've got :)). It carries just the same FRU, runs reasonably cooler than any other option (but is a bit louder than T500).

I will be disassembling my system in a couple of days, may take a a quick shot and post it for you.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

Just started last night with another T601F Frankenpad using the aforementioned fan/heatsink.

Confirmed that the 42W2028 fits and does an excellent job of cooling....38-40 degrees C at idle.

(In this case an Intel x9000 @ 2.8 Ghz in one of Tuus' NOS 44C3924 Nvidia NVS140M planars.) :D :D :D

Only minor shifting of the top fins at the rear of the fan were required for a perfect fit.

Arctic Silver 5 paste, original pads were still in the heatsink.

Core Temp shows 38C @ idle, 65C with light web browsing . :D :D :D

Going to spend the day finishing the assembly and running some Furmark tests to see if/how much undervolting will be required.

Regards.

Thank you to both of you - are we talking about those copper fins which stick up near the left hinge - and are conveniently the same width and fit the wifi cables?

Yep, 10-4 Good Buddy (as they USED to say on the road...)

Those are the fins on the top...as XSIST claimed, they just need a gentle "nudging" to make the fan fit in place.

No problem with the Wi-Fi wires.
