New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
Hello everyone,
last week I bought at eBay x200s, and yesterday it arrived. It is 7446-3sg model, with Webcam. I suppose, it has also UMTS modem, because I can see a SIM-Card-clot under the battery. It runs Windows 7 pro. After I updated Lenovo Software using "Update" Utility, I have no mark questions in the device Manager. But I also have neither cam nor UMTS-modem. When I check BIOS, I also see no Webcam or UMTS modem, but I see wireless USB. Can anyone give me a hint, how to test, if I have a cam, or not? And what "wireless USB" does mean?
I would appreciate any hint,
Regards,
Andrey

Re: New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
The presence of the SIM card holder doesn't mean it has a UMTS modem. Case in point, all the X61 units I've owned had a SIM slot, but none had 3G modems.
Strange. 7446-3sg doesn't show up in the MTM database, and model 7446 refers to the R400.
Regarding the webcam, try installing the hotkey features program, then use the keyboard shortcut for the camera.

Hey, sorry, I typed the wrong number, most probably.. will correct myself when I'm back home.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Thu May 03, 2018 5:06 amStrange. 7446-3sg doesn't show up in the MTM database, and model 7446 refers to the R400.
Concerning the Webcam: what should bring me the Utility from Lenovo, if BIOS doesn't list it?

A.

Re: New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
The specs of your 7466-3SG:
SL9400(1.86GHz), 2GB RAM, 250GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in 1280x800 LCD, Intel 4500MHD, Intel 802.11agn wireless, WWAN upgradeable, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 4c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32
You have a standard 56K modem, not an UMTS-modem.
UMTS would be part of the WWAN-upgrade that is possible (in USA back then for Verizon or AT&T).
UMTS is rather outdated and has been superseded by HSDPA and newer.
Don't know what (if any) WWAN-options they had/have for Europe.

thanks for the info. I have 150 GB HDD + Windows7Pro 64 bit (most probably, upgraded from Vista). And what about Webcam? And wireless USB? Can it be, that someone exchanged Webcam against wireless USB module? To be honest, I would prefer cam instead of (completelly uselesss) wireless USB.

Andrey

Read those specs again!
Your machine never had a webcam.
As for wireless USB card, check the HMM, page 109, if you have it (optional) or not.
I have never even seen any wireless USB device, so if it's there, remove it to save some energy.

I definitely do have a webcam. I disassembled the bezel, and found a cam inside. Unfortunatelly, it is not recognized by Windows as OS (no imaging devices in device manager) and Skype also doesn't recognize it.
Unfortunatelly, I had not enough time tonight to disassemble the laptop completely, I only removed the keyboard, but failed to remove the covering plate.
So, the question is - why doesn't cam get recognized there...

Andrey

Re: New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
It might be disconnected, or the LCD-cable went haywire, rather common for those machines.
Check your cable if it is for LED or CCFL, (and with or without Bluetooth) then replace it.

thanks for the hint. Could you give me a hint, where are the wires of the cam connected? As I said, yesterady I just could reach the cover plate under the keyboard.
Another thing I found yesterday: the Disk Manager of Windows shows me, that I have 2 HDDs - one of 1,37 GB (without any OS), and another one is 160GB with NTFS. I suppose, the smaller one is the Turbo Memory cache, isn't it?

Andrey

Re: New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
Yesterday I took some time and disassembled my laptop (or at least I tried it). Some results:
- I have 2 GB (according to FRU) Turbo Cache module
- I ocassionally broke the FingerPrint connector (and, I suppose, the slot on the main board where cable it attached to)
- I checked the cam - it is firmly connected to the cable going behind the display. So, I have no idea why this device is not being recognized properly
But, I have to say - I'm really impressed by its performance/speed. Especially comparing to the Dell D420 I used for my trips last 6-8 months.
Cheers,
Andrey

Re: New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
Take out Turbo Cache module every time. This only add more problems compared to helping with performance (not that any noticeable improvement) and 2GB is too small to help either. Reason for this was for Vista only and win 7 and later does not support this, in fact windows 10 will not install with this Turbo Cache module installed.

Re: New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
Helklo, I have read sveral articles saying TurboCache was nice idea, but became quite useless very fast. I removed the card, and now I have only 1 drive.thinkpadcollection wrote: ↑Sun May 06, 2018 8:06 pmTake out Turbo Cache module every time. At the present I have 2 empty miniPCI slots - one for WWAN and another one became free becauzse of TurboCache. Any ideas, how I could use them? Like mSATA drives, for example?
@RealBlackStuff: my display cable has FRU 44C9909. Do you mean, I should replpace this cable to get cam working? Can it be that only cam-wire got broken? The rest works - display itself, ThinkLight...

Re: New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
mSATA SSDs won't work on those slots. Among the X series, only the X220 and X230 support them.
The mSATA connector only has SATA and USB signals, while the X200's mini PCIe slots only have PCIe signals (WWAN slot also has USB).

it looks good, but my cable has version "VER 02A", and not "VER 04A" (like yours). Is it relevant?

Re: New user of X200s: questions about hardware (cam + UMTS modem + wireless USB)
Thanks for the hint. Yesterday I checked Bluetooth - it works. So I'm still not really sure, if the issue with cam is cable-related, or cam itself is broken.. or BIOS (which I updated 2 weeks ago via "System Update" of Lenovo) is faulty and simply ignores the cam. I found a thread on LENOVO-forum discussing exactly the issue with the cam on X200/X200s. So, I'm definitely not the only one...
Just an idea: can it be that the cam is not in the "white list" of devices? That someone exchanged it, and placed in the "wrong" module, which is not allowed by BIOS?

Andrey

you were right, I replaced the cable, and the cam is available. But the image is very strange - everything is pink, I can see only my silhouette. I checked the cable going into the cam - it seats very firmly. Is is a problem of cam/cable, or driver?
