Thinkpad T420 and I7 3840QM

#1 Post by Lean15 » Mon May 28, 2018 9:13 am

Hello! I'd like to know, if i mod the bios of my T420, will it be able to take the i7 3840QM Ivy Bridge CPU ? I can get it for pretty cheap if it could work.

I tried the CPU. Turned on, some LEDs lit up, but no display.

Did you apply Coreboot first?

No, im just asking will it work, cause i've only seen people try the I7 36xx and 37xx, not 38xx. yes, i have tried to search for the 3840QM

If you have coreboot , the machine will run with the 3840QM. But, I'm not sure if it will overheat. My 3630QM does not overheat but it may throttle, cpu temps reach 90C under extended load, >20minutes.
T420 i7 3612QM seabios; T420 i7 3630QM; T400 Q9100 seabios; T61 P9600; T60 libreboot; x62; x60s libreboot, led; x24 xiphmont led
