Parts upgrade questions on T430

#1 Post by s0uls » Tue Jun 03, 2014 6:37 am

I got a base model t430 (1366x768 screen, HDD, no backlight KB)

I would like to put a 1600x900 screen on it, an Msata drive for the os (64/120gb)

While the msata ssd upgrade is easy like a ram upgrade. I would like to know if the screen replacement is posible.

I saw many ebay listing for t430 screens running the resolution I want but I don't know if they will work on my machine.

Is there a way to validate that before ordering a display ?
I have already changed display panels on older thinkpads but always for the same FRU.

Thanks in advance!

You will need another LCD cable for the HD+ screen, either 04W6867 or 04W6868.
And you have a choice of panels:
04W3331 LGD 14.0" HD+
93P5685 SEC 14.0" HD+
93P5693 AUO 14.0" HD+
Don't know about their quality.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

as stated on previous reply, you need to ensure the LCD cable for HD+ screen is available.

Anyone know where to find one of those cables to replace my low resolution display with an HD+ one?

I may be wrong, but think the mSATA port is SATA1 whereas for the HDD is SATA3 = much faster. You would be better off replacing the HDD with an SSD.

Feebay seems to be the only source.
Most affordable ones in China
Reasonable USA here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/292554852279
Ask them first if they are willing to ship to Canada, or else -if you have a friend in USA- if they can ship there.

By the time you buy the relevent screen and display cable and shipping, you'll be half way towards the cost of the FHD upgrade. Have you considered doing that instead?

I've heard the FHDs have an issue with flickering.

I've heard that too, of older kits but there's a few reports both here and on Reddit of people using a kit from taobao (I think) for the 420/430 and being flicker free. Check out the recent threads.

Where on Reddit should I be looking? Here, there is only one person giving a report back on the "taobao" cables. Don't want to spend that kind of money if its not going to work right.

Would one notice the difference between SATA2 and SATA3? Would prefer to use the mSATA slot.

Except in synthetic benchmarks, IMO no you will not notice a difference in everyday usage. If you are moving massive amount of data all the time then yes but in normal everyday usage that consists of frequent reads/writes of small files, no.
