PWM in 370 ?

#1 Post by swallman » Tue Jul 10, 2018 9:47 am

So I've been reading a lot about PWM in many of the Thinkpad laptops. I'm assuming that PWM has been around for quite awhile and just really being talked about now?

I'm considering a Yoga 370 and I know it's not the greatest (around 217 PWM below 50% brightness), but I had my X230 (IPS) for quite awhile and never gave it a thought of whether or not it has PWM?

Just wondering if I'm being too worried...it won't be used all day long - just a personal laptop for occasional use at home more than anything.

I read about PWM when a relation of mine was looking at the Yoga 370 and the 380. My perception was PWM was probably more likely on the 380.

When I saw the 370 I saw no signs of PWM at normal settings and no PWM problems have surfaced since.

Is it possible to have PWM problems if you purchase a 370? Maybe depending on brightness settings.

But from my experience for the 370 PWM is not a deal breaker. YMMV

For me battery life could be more of an issue if you need 8 hours battery life in a day. Also with the thin chassis throttling could become an issue depending on your power requirements.

Because the 370 is a 2017 model there should be people reporting issues online.

For those still wondering, not really perceptible.
I have had a 370 for more than 6 months now, and I cannot perceive it. According to notebookcheck PWM appears in 370 when screen brightness is below 50%.
I have done the empirical test with the phone camera, and I can confirm that it exists, but it is rare that I have brightness below 50%.

Sorry if it seems that I am reviving a too old a thread. Just contributing.
