LF: IBM 701C(S) Dock and battery

#1 Post by TheForgottenKing » Sun Jul 08, 2018 8:57 am

Bought a 701CS off ebay in For Parts condition, does not power but lights turn on. Has no battery installed. Also would like a dock.

Yes, apparently the machine lights turn on, power and battery light flashes, power light turns on, but no boot. Might be display. Need an adapter to use VGA

I have 2 or 3 docks but they are bringing crazy prices so not going to sell cheap. Odds are your problem is the CMOS battery on the motherboard or the motherboard itself.

Thought the same. How much would you let one go for? Also, does 701CS have any ports?

You wouldn't happen to have any batteries, CMOS/System, or a motherboard? Also, I would prefer to switch to a 701C screen as TFT > DSTN from what I read

That pretty much looks like my collection of stuff. I seriously have collected that much over the years but there is not enough in that collection to make a working unit. The additional necessary parts are impossible to find so having the collection does very little for you.

I have a system I still need to sell for Bill Morrow and I need a dock for that and then I have my own personal machine and I have a dock for that. And I may have one (1) more I will check but I am thinking perhaps $75 plus shipping??!

The only ports 701CS has without a dock are the modem and the floppy/printer cable attachments and then the pcmcia slots to which you can actually attach a wide range of devices. They make pcmcia to serial, NIC, SCSI adapter etc. and I have a big collection of various pcmcia cards.

All the batteries I have beyond the 2 complete units I have are in pretty scruffy shape but could be rebuilt I guess. I have no working ones at all so the 2 "good" ones I have are for cosmetics.

The CMOS/system battery you can buy at a drugstore it is a matter of getting someone to solder it on. I have perhaps 7 or 8 motherboards, all of which throw off an error code which may or may not be fixed if you solder on a new CMOS. As far as replacing the screen, the Cs dual scan screen does not fit in the same housing as the TFT screen for the 701C so you have to find a whole screen housing but they are swappable. The motherboards are the same and will drive either kind of screen.

Not a bad idea, I might buy that dock and one battery off of you, I have the ability to rebuild it. When mine arrives I will try to resurrect it first, otherwise I might also buy a motherboard. Would ~125 be reasonable for dock/battery/board, if needed? If not I might just need the dock, time will tell

If I have the third dock. I will look tonite and if I do yes 125 would be fair as the battery would be rough and the board would need work.

That's fine, I can recell and do the other work. Would you also happen to have the screen assembly for the 701C?

Also looking into buying a 701C from a reddit user assuming he still has it as the listing is two years old.

I looked at my stock and only have 2 docks so I cannot afford to part with either. I have no available full screen assemblies but I do have some working panels. I do have some batteries and motherboards.

That's fine, because the machine actually boots, sometimes. Sometimes it does not power on and beeps twice, might be a bad CMOS battery. How much would you part one 701C screen and one battery for? Or, just one battery

Edit: Looks like its the CMOS battery, because I can power off the machine but leave the charger connected and it boots fine

I might try to rig the 701C screen into the 701CS, is the connector the same? If so, also interested in a bezel. How much for battery+screen+bezel?

I don't have any bezels. They are very thin plastic and most have deteriorated to where they are as fragile as paper. There are also at least three distinct bezels out there and you have to get the right one for your screen housing. The 701C and the Cs have the screw that holds the panel into the screen casing in a different place. I have tried to swap a 701C screen into a Cs housing and if you can make it work you are a better tech than I. The cable connections to the screen are the same so you can replace make a 701Cs into a C easily if you have the right screen and housing. I can send you a dead ugly battery for the cost of shipping. Screens I will have to test to get you a good one but maybe $35?

I'll take the battery for now, my bezel is a bit screwy because I overestimated the plastic and now have to rebuild it. With the battery, is the board and housing intact? I'll probably get the screen in a while, just don't want to throw too much money at this.

The batteries I have are intact but the leads are covered with that green stuff. I will look for a plastic cap which I am pretty sure I have a few of and can spare one.

That's fine, just bought a For Parts 701C for $120 that I can fuse with my 701CS (I damaged the bezel and the display -.-) to get the better display assembly, if it doesn't come with a battery I will definitely buy that off you

Won't need the screen or battery as I found a For Parts 701C that I merged together (Looks nicer) but you wouldn't happen to have any 701C screen backing or bezels? Thanks

I might hit you up. Mines a bit damaged, but I think I can repair it. 701CS lid can be modded to fit 701C screen with a dremel

I might also recreate the bezel on a 3d printer.

Don't need any parts at the moment though, thanks for information though.

Also, may I ask how you acquired this stash?

eBay....years of buying parts units....in many cases what I have now is stuff I replaced with better some time ago but always kept the old ones.

Not a bad strategy

How much for one 701C Lid + 1 not corroded Battery Chip (Or the whole thing) shipped to CONUS? Doesn't need to be in best shape, just needs to have intact hinges

I checked my stock and I thought I had more batteries. I have one complete with the cap and the extra I thought I had has the plastic mounts for the cap broken so no go. I did find a screen back in good shape. Plastic not broken and not sticky. You would have to transplant over your screen latches but that is easy to do. It has the right hinge bolted in (as you look at the screen) but the left is missing. I have lots of hinges and screws and mounting plates and could put a left hinge in for you. Post back if you want it.
