Trying to find a clear value for ThinkPad T23 (Large images)

#1 Post by Scrolls » Wed Jul 25, 2018 2:08 am

Hello all,

I’ve been snooping about the internet looking to find a value on my like new T23 that was given to me by a family friend that left it in his closet for 16 years. surprisingly the computer is fully intact, the original battery holds a 2 and a half hour charge at idle, and is fully capable of running civilization III with no stability issues at all. (I played as the Germans for two days and got a conquest victory ) which can sometimes max out the processor.

The only damage is minor cosmetic damage to the bottom left corner of the chassis.

Unfortunately discord is the only method I can use to convert images to links on my phone.

When using taskmgr 6% of processor resources and 115 mb of ram.

(This ones nearly 8 Mb)

It still has the origional spec sticker. (Although the ram has been upgraded to 512 Mb)

(Not so sure about the file size of this one but just assume a maximum of 8 Mb)

TL;DR: I have a middle spec t23 and am not sure of the value.

Welcome to the Forum.

On the bottom there should be a sticker which says something like: TYPE 2647-8NU S/N AB-12345
The TYPE is what people want to know.
Enter that TYPE in the MTM-link at the top of this page for more info,

To get a value, search fleabay for: IBM T23 in the PC Laptops and Netbooks section.
Scroll down on the left, and tick the box for Show only Sold Items
Sort those for Ended Recently.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Ok so I searched for the model number which is 2648-MU7 but none have been sold on eBay. All the ones I can find are 2647-MU4. Does this mean my machine is worth more or less than the standard one?

Not necessarily. Type isn't all that important, but it shows what the machine looked like ex-factory.
Overall condition is usually the most important.

Your machine:
T23 2647-MU4
PIII-M 1.13GHz (512KB), 128MB RAM, 48.0GB HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 8x-3.3x DVD, Modem, Ethernet, TV out, Li-Ion battery, Win2000

The 'rarity' part in your case is the SXGA+ screen, the rest is common for most.

Top of the line would be a pristine T23 with 1.2GHz CPU, SXGA+ screen, ex-factory wifi, DVD/CDRW, a working battery and 512MB or 1GB RAM.

I found this unit sold on eBay for $70
Since mine has a higher clocked processor, double the ram, and is in near new (if slightly scuffed) condition. what price would you say gets it sold? I’m hoping to sell this and a pair of old Motorola starTAC phones and make at least $200 hopefully more, and buy a t61p and a video card for my desktop.

"...The only damage is minor cosmetic damage to the bottom left corner of the chassis..."

That is major damage to me. The case is cracked through and I doubt a replacement will be easy to come by. It will also require stripping the entire chassis to replace.

I don't want it, so I'm not saying that to get a low-ball price. I'm just saying, to me it is major damage for a "like new" machine. I would never purchase a T5XX series with that sort of damage.

I should have fixed that. sure the crack is major damage, but the machine works, and the damage hardly hampers the experience of using the machine. And overall is minor damage when you’re taking the whole machine into consideration. Well, unless you’re staring at it. :)

I'm sure it runs very well, I'm just a stickler for cosmetics and a pristine looking machine.

Would you say the damage is enough to lower the price?

Yes.

You can put it on fleabay and see what you get, set the reserve price at where you'd like to see it sold and good luck.

As somebody who has gone through more than his fair share of T23 systems from eBay (last count was 58 machines), let me chime in with this:

1) Back when I was seriously collecting T23 laptops (about 10 years ago), the cleanest and cheapest SXGA+ systems I bought was for around $80-$90. Some were good right out of the box. Others had disclosed problems which in some cases were easily solved; like removing a defective MiniPCI combo (WiFi and ethernet) card. In fact, that was one of the reasons why I liked (and still do) the T23; some of the common problems had simple solutions. Others, like the infamous detached inductor(s) only required disassembly and some soldering time.

2) Nowdays even a fully spec'ed T23 (1.2Ghz CPU w/1GB, built-in wireless and SXGA+ screen) is barely capable of running Windows XP SP3. Possibly one of the many varieties of Linux would function better, assuming you could find one that still supports the ancient graphics processor. Firefox, and I believe Chrome as well, consumes so much system memory and along with the resource requirements of the various multimedia add-ons (Flash, Java, etc.), that even browsing the web can significantly slow the system.

3) The crack in the lower left corner is fairly common. I think I have had about a dozen systems with it. As was stated upthread, the only way to fix it would be to swap in another (used) plastic base. There's also a couple of other weak points in the bottom chassis; it tends to crack the thin keyboard bezel on both the right and left sides near the front corners of the keyboard. This is the usual result when a thin aluminum mounting bracket in the Ultrabay frame breaks. Repeated opening and closing of the lid then puts pressure on the bezel, which snaps.

4) My history on eBay has included some "bad" deals; mostly shipping-caused damage due to the seller not adequately packing the system. As to PayPal, it is a necessary evil in that in the early days of eBay, one could pay for items without having to use PayPal. And over the years eBay and PayPal has evolved into siding more with the buyer in a dispute, rather than the seller. Not to mention the increasing fees that sellers must deal with when using eBay. As my time on eBay has been primarily on the buying side (I have sold some high-end radio scanners and other electronics), I haven't been exposed to that end of the transaction as much as some other members here have. My opinion is that eBay and PayPal is still safer than Craigslist for buying and selling Thinkpads, but not as good as going through the Marketplace forum here. The "problem" here is that you tend to deal with a small group of people who are more "in the know" with what the system might be worth and are more critical with defects. Conversely, eBay offers sellers more eyeballs on an item and therefore more chances that the selling price could be higher. Minus all the fees of course...

Good luck with your sale!

I purchased a pristine T23 last year for just over $100. I had been searching for a while and was willing to pay ~$150-200 for a pristine and working T23 since they are now close to 20 years old and becoming more rare.

I think that people who are looking for a modern production machine are not going to be willing to pay as much as a collector would be.

My machine is dual booting a factory installation of Windows 2000 (I have the factory CDs) and Windows XP:

Stephen Fox's IBM ThinkPad T23 (2002)
ThinkPad 600E (Win98); T23 (WinNT 4.0); T41 (Win2000); T61p (WinXP)
My name is Stephen Fox. I am a '18 BBA and '20 MBA student at WCSU.

If you decide to sell it on eBay and auction it, I've found good success in selling items that end on Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 5PM to 9PM EST.
Whats your score on eBay? if you have 0 feedback, it opens the floodgates to scammers & spammers.
Luckily older IBM ThinkPads aren't hot items to these folks, unless there's a keyword that triggers it ('gaming i7 laptop') then you'll get people who 'buy it' and then tell you that their paypal email isn't working and if you can send them an invoice via paypal so you can save on ebay fees. Never do that, they'll ask & get a full refund and you lost your laptop + shipping you paid for.

The SXGA+ screen is desired, very neat for collectors if they don't have one. I haven't been following T2x prices for awhile, though I did pay $60 for a local T30, you could get more for that because working & tested models are becoming rare to get.

Due to its thickness and age of materials, I wouldn't be too confident in shipping it inside a USPS medium or gameboard box.

With the damage you have on the corner, I wouldn't bother try fixing it.
just make sure you erase user data, you can do it a few different ways, fully wiping the HDD with Darik's boot n nuke, or finding all the files to delete & then erasing free space with ccleaner.
Reinstalling an OS sometimes doesn't work, and with linux, you might not find the right system.
Your buyer will just probably install their own OS anyways.

On a good day, I'd estimate its worth $80 to $150, possibly more if you have the original box or manuals (and say that it comes with it in the listing title).
