Ditch the defender in favor of Spybot Search & Destroy, only use it's on demand portion... with noscript/adaware you can skip the resident part of spybot.
I would say you are pretty secure, prolly more so then a lot of machines I come across on a daily basis I cringe nowadays when I sit down at someones machine and see IE is their main browser... or even those who choose Firefox don't have Noscript & AdBlock

Coincidentally I just recently brought an 8086 machine w/ a 20 MB hard disk online to the internet. I upgraded it with a V30 and 8087-2, though.WA2SI wrote:Geez, you guys make me feel a tad old. I just ordered a W520 as an upgrade from my trusty R51. (Which will remain in service as a back-up, btw.) However, I remember buying my Tandy RL1000 running a fire-breathing Intel 8086 and sporting a whopping 20 MB hdd.

I run Slackware on a Thinkpad X120e with Windows 2000 in a virtual machine, isolated from the net. I use the machine for my office tasks (Office 2000 with the compatibility pack is still my favourite office suite). The nice thing is that it's distraction free (no browser, no email), yet I can still use Dropbox, since anything I save to the host OS Dropbox folder gets sync'd as usual.lemonstar wrote:Up until a year ago I had a T22 running 2000 but it only used with a standalone scanner - I never used it to connect to the internet - I only packed that machine away when the scanner broke and I had to buy a new one. I still have XP on a Samsung NC10 netbook - I tried a lightweight version of Mint designed specifically for netbooks (mine has 2G or RAM) but it didn't run as well as XP does. I till use that NC10 as it has a great keyboard and a 500G drive with a load of film on it -it great when I go away - I use it mainly for writing - songs/poetry - I have a 10" Sony tablet but I prefer the NC keyboard.

I used it from 1999 right through to around 2011 when stuff like browsers (Chrome comes to mind) were incompatible, also think later Office products wouldn't work on it.
Although Linux is my main OS I will always admire 2000 as a 'classic'... oh along with OS/2 Warp....
OS/2 Warp on a 760XD... if you were running that in 1997 you rocked!

For SATA to work under Windows 2000, you will need Intel's Matrix Storage Manager driver (126.96.36.1990). Although, that specific driver version does not support the SATA controller integrated in the QM67 chipset. It only supports the 6311ESB, 6321ESB, ICH6R, ICH6M, ICH7R, ICH7M, ICH7M DH, ICH8R, ICH8DH, ICH8DO, ICH8BM, and the ICH8EM.
Although, Intel's latest chipset driver (188.8.131.520) released for Windows 2000, supports the QM67 chipset. It also appears to have the SATA controller driver included in the chipset installation, as well as the other important drivers required for the QM67 chipset.
Next is the graphics driver: the Quadro 1000M or the Quadro 2000M is only supported under Windows XP and above. If you were to backtrack to the older drivers, the Quadro 1000M or the Quadro 2000M would not be in there either. However, if you are very desperate to get Windows 2000 working on your W520 for some reason, you can get NVIDIA's Quadro Release 261.19 WHQL driver. It has support for the Quadro 600 and the Quadro 2000 (utilizes the GF108/GF106 chip, just like the Quadro 1000M/2000M respectively), so you can edit that line and add your 1000M or 2000M's PCI ID in. I would usually advise against this, but well... its your call.
USB 3.0 may work, but that is something I have not tried yet. You need to have blackwingcat's extended kernel for it to work, as far as I know. Just get a XP x86 driver from NEC or Renesas for their uPD720200 USB 3.0 controller, and then run it with the extended kernel, it should work.
The Conexant sound chip's driver may work under Windows 2000 as well, provided that blackwingcat's extended kernel is installed. Similarly, I can not confirm if this works either.
If your W520 has a Realtek wireless adapter, it may work under Windows 2000 with blackwingcat's extended kernel too. The Intel wireless adapters, as far as I am concerned, do not support Windows 2000 at all. Even if it did, you would be stuck with basic WEP encryption.
In the end, you would have a very limited W520 running Windows 2000. I believe it would be better for you to run Windows XP x86 or XP x64, since Windows 2000 has a lot of compatibility issues nowadays. blackwingcat's extended kernel can only do so much, and it has not managed to fully simulate Windows XP's kernel yet.
I would strongly advise you to switch over to Windows XP, at the very least. Windows 2000 is only good for those old machines that are heavily bogged down with limited RAM or processing power.
