This T440p is the most boring laptop I've owned...

#1 Post by Scottfish » Thu Sep 27, 2018 11:38 am

Which is exactly why I love it. It just "looks" like a laptop. Nothing crazy. It just "works" like a laptop should.

No bells, no whistles, just some rock solid Linux running goodness.

Same here. They are all 'business' without cute colors, doo-dads, and other crap you don't need.

Very much like my T450. It just works. I dock it, get some work done, throw it in my bag, and go. Do I care if I scratch, ding, or scrape the machine? No. This isn't a Mac. I didn't carry art(not great art, just a shiner, overheating gray box) to get work done, I carry a machine to get work done. I treat my 30 and earlier series much better because they are really nice machines. This thing is a grey box with a good keyboard and screen. Past that, a gray box stays a gray box.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Funny, my T440p is as black as they come...
And not boring at all!

All T440p units I've seen had slightly brownish grey chassis with black keyboard keys, but in pictures it sometimes looks more black. Are the pictures misleading or did they have different shades of the chassis?

I guess mine isn't totally boring. It has the trackpad mod and backlit keyboard. Plus... 3 SSDs, so I have redundant redundancy.

I just put a T440p, an X230 and an X240 next to each other.
Colors indeed look a bit different and T440p looks indeed a bit "browner".

Thank you for these pics! :thumbs-UP:

I think the T440p and X240 colors are very similar. X230 is exactly like all CS09 systems with a deeper black. It's fascinating how color schemes have changed slightly over the years.

*40 generation introduced a new charcoal gray body color while *70 and newer Thinkpads are black again. I've seen P51 in person and it was as black as my T430 next to it.

Can confirm that with a T470 right next to my T450.

I like the real black better.

Wait, the CS09 machines have a deeper black? Didn't know that. I know my 755C's lid is very dark, but the 755CDV(rubberied) is a bit lighter.

And the real Thinkpad is brown...

Deeper than the CS13 (*40 series) that is; about the same as most other Thinkpads, including all the ones in my collection; not piano black like S30 series or something. :)

I owned a 760XL for years, and used it after College living at home, so imagine my surprise a few years ago I took my T550 home and my mom stated "oh you still have that old machine"... other than being astounded by her memory (going back nearly twenty years) she really did have a point....

Upgraded my CPU last night to an i7 4700.

Still say this laptop is boring. Aside from having to run out for rubbing alcohol to clean the heatsink, this took 5 minutes, little effort, and no issues.

This is the way laptops should be made.

This looks like an interesting machine and looks cheap enough ex-lease.

However the Optimus is super poor being a GT730 and good luck sifting thru all the 768p rubbish.

With a quad and perhaps an fhd or even a 900p screen it could be a goer.

Look for one with Intel graphics, FHD and AC-7260 wifi.
I used this PSREF when I was hunting for mine: http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad_T440p
I ended up with a T440p 20AN00C6US.
Replaced the clunkpad with a T450 touchpad+buttons.
It's the very last of the (upgradable) Mohicans.

Is the standard T440 substantially worse?

A quick glance seems to show that its about the same spec wise but obviously larger heavier cheaper.

T440p has socketed CPUs and can use up to quad core and has magnesium chassis, while T440 has soldered CPUs dual core Ultralow voltage and Glass fiber polymer chassis.
Also T440p has two ram slots, and T440 only one.
T440 has no IPS or FHD options, no smart card reader either.
Plus a few more options for the T440p, you do the math/search.
T440p = eminently upgradable, T440/T440s are not.

Mothers have a way of saying these things. She still remembers how I had an x61 in middle school that I used all $10.10 of my allowance at the thrift store to buy.

When she saw me come home with (my significantly more expensive x61 with a T9500 and massive, massive screen modding), the outside was still all the same, and she asked me why I decided to get my first computer all over again. xD.

Somewhere in the middle of that, I've had a Dell Inspiron and an ASUS ROG, but each of those was brought back home during University vacation periods because I didn't like them.

*and I got serious about a year ago - that's when I got my museum pieces (a 760XL [sadly dead now], a s30 (with XP and the high end CPU), and a PC110 [base unit only, the display is driven with a VGA out])

That chicken sure looks funny.
