SO I managed 3.8 for most of the AIDA64 benchmarks and results are located here (some could not be completed due to heat:
Wishing I had a cooling system as robust as that from the W700 :)
https://ibb.co/album/fHD13v

Other benchmarks have been updated to include FPU Julia, FPU Mandel and FPU SinJulia. Running at a poultry 3.4Ghz

Although daily use at 3.4 is reasonable speed wise. No complaints. With a core voltage of 1.225.

The benchmark scores you have gotten are not too far from my W700's '4GHz' score. It is pretty close in fact, to the point that I would not mind being approximately 200MHz slower for very miniscule gains. Excluding the memory benchmarks of course, since I don't think it is fair to compare a DDR2 system to a DDR3 system.

It is also pretty pointless to do anything with the W700 going at 4GHz, because not many applications benefit from the high clock speed. The applications that I do see noticeable improvements in, are single-threaded emulators. One example is DeSmuME, but that is all I can think of right now.

Still an amusing bench-off as you called it, it is about time that we got some information on what happens if the W700 went head-to-head with a T61p in the overclocking department. Nice benching with you though, it has been quite a long time since I had compared my benchmarks with someone else other than myself.

Speaking of the W700 at full potential, what would that look like? QX9300? Can the cooling system handle a quad core?

I jones for a lenovo quad core DDR3 laptop...

As for our benchmark / bench off results, yeah the difference is not as much as I would have thought. Good to get some more data out there.

Overclocking/tweaking without stability means nothing as it's not useful. Stability test along with proper screen shots are key to authenticity otherwise it's just another wild internet claim. That's our retro way of doing overclocking and is a practice that is generally followed to this day. You guys should check out some overclocking forums. Next up nitro!

Yes, the W700's heatsink can handle that, I just did not like the idea of having a slow quad-core. Most of my workloads tend to be very centered on single-threaded performance, which is why I never used a Core 2 Quad on my W700.

If I did recall properly about a W700 that had a QX9300 that was overclocked, it hit 3.2GHz on all cores. Must have been fast for sure, but I don't have a QX9300 to test right now. Though, I might get a QX9300 once I am done with my laptops that seriously needs repairs.

May 24 hours of Prime95's small FFTs suffice for your stability requirements? This is what I use to test if my overclock is anywhere stable.

T520 and T530 are good machines to throw a quad core into with a modified DGPU heatsink. The W520 and W530 are also good, with beefier heatsinks and workstation graphics, and can take up to 32GB of RAM. They can also sustain turbo unlike the 14" T420 and T430. All of them natively support FHD screens and there are apparently some drop in IPS screens as well.

T520 are becoming inexpensive, you can probably throw a quad core T520 with FHD and DGPU HSF modded in together for under $200. I built such a beast for $125 starting with a $50 sorry condition T520 on eBay.

Nevermind that a T520/530 CPU and platform is leagues faster and more energy efficient than any T61 mods.

Can you provide a download link please. Thanks, can't find throttlestop 8.50 anywhere on the internet.
Google a bit harder next time:

https://www.techpowerup.com/download/te ... ottlestop/
That's 8.7 NOT 8.5.

No, that was my mistake for not googling it. I was in a rush when the comments were posted and I wanted someone to find it for me because at the time I couldn't. If I caused any trouble I apologise.

As you probably know, the T61p does not have much in the way of cooling so we have bench settings and then what works stable for daily use. The art of refinement.

What is your CPU clocked at now, is it 3.8GHz or 3.4GHz because you mentioned something about running the CPU at 3.8GHz in a former post.

Right now and at most times 3.4ghz @ 1.225 volts. We ran 3.8 for most of the benchmarks in the AIDA64 suite. And 4.2 for the CPUz hardware validation. Which is 3rd overall for the x9000 at HWbot.org when going on just clock speed. :thumbs-UP:

EDIT: Did you get your version of ThrottleStop downloaded? They typically include the 8.5 version in a sub folder located in the root of the TS install directory.

I found 8.5 and downloaded it, but I'm having trouble overclocking my P9600 :( .

P9600 does not have an unlocked multiplier. The whole point of Intel Core Extreme series X9100, X9000, QX9300, X7900, X7800, and T7600G is having an unlocked multiplier so you can overclock which you cannot do on a normal CPU.

However your P9600 does have Intel IDA (precursor to Turbo Boost) so you may occasionally see him run one of the cores at 2.8 ghz. Then there are ways to force Dual IDA as well.

Ok, that's what I thought. I plan to buy a X9100 anyways for my R400, I just wanted to get familiar with ThrottleStop.

That's correct... Dual IDA mode for the win. You can force dual IDA utilizing the middleton BIOS in conjunction with throttlestop for a gain of about 13% but it sounds like you are upgrading CPUs anyway... In any event, in the throttlestop options you will see a setting for "start Dual IDA" check that box and you'll be off and running.

There's no Middleton's for the R400, but other mod bioses ex. bios-mods.com/forum may have Dual IDA enabled.

For those of you who disagree with the term retro I think we can come to a compromise here.

How about T61p "retrofit" instead?

Its been well over a year since this project was born. I just wanted to provide a quick status update:
-The T61p is still my go to laptop for most everything
-X9000 is holding up just fine at 3.4Ghz
-Heat is not an issue because I can control fan speed via TPFancontrol
-Did a fresh install of Windows 10 today and upgraded to a larger SSD drive

Hey storm-chaser,

That's one solid T61P build, nicely done. To me any computer that can run current software fluidly can not be called retro at all and i bet your T61p runs windows 10 just fine as it is nothing. The photos of the T61P in the album look like trash unfortunately, so you definitly have a retro camera there. :thumbs-UP:

Droider, storm-chaser,

Please keep the discussion civil. When talking to half-anonymous folks on the web, which you have never met face-to-face, maybe there are more polite ways of getting the message across other than calling someone's photos "trash" and telling the other guy he might look "like a fool".

Thanks.

Yes, I did another run just to check things out but it wasn't much different. Are you saying you have the same system running the benchmark in literally half the time? To be clear, you are using a T61p for this bench as well?

Yes, I did another run just to check things out but it wasn't much different. Are you saying you have the same system running the benchmark in literally half the time? To be clear, you are using a T61p for this bench as well?
sorry my bad, it was 49,2, but I think it was a lucky shot, the best I can get right now is 52.5 at 3.4GHZ, albeit its very hot today, so maybe thats a factor too
on stock clock of 2.8GHz I get 57.1,
at 3.2 GHz I get 56.8

Yeah heat definitely plays a factor. As you can see I was right at the redline with that last run. Both cores were at or about 200*F for at least half a minute. Not something I want to do every day, but once in a while is alright.
