T430s battery life with and without optimus

I've had a couple T430s machines in the past, and with dual batteries, they seemed to do pretty well (4 hours or so). My current T430s has the nvidia gpu and it gets about half the battery life. Is that normal for optimus? I thought optimus was supposed to only use nvidia when needed, and I rarely use any applications that need it.

In any case, I set the BIOS to integrated only just recently and it seems like the battery life improved a lot.
