Is anyone interested in a G50?

#1 Post by Screamer » Fri Dec 14, 2018 1:56 pm

Anyone? I was a little upset about the fact that it couldn't accept a Core 2 Duo, and I thought someone else would have a better use for this machine.

My original intention was to turn the G50 into a Socket M test bench for overclocking, since its heatsink looks like as if it could handle the heat. Although, because of the annoying BIOS roadblock (or embedded controller roadblock), this can't be done. Which brings me to giving it away locally, for a small price.

I don't feel like shipping internationally, due to the ridiculous cost that comes along with it (that would also raise the price to unreasonable levels).

EDIT: If there are any moderators or administrators reading this, please feel free to move this to the marketplace instead. Also, the G50's gone.

Indeed it does, and I did consider creating the post in the marketplace instead. Although, I felt that it was a little too ambiguous in my opinion. Give me sometime to decide, I guess... and thanks.

This sounds like a a sales post in its full glory, so I vote it be moved.

Otherwise, good luck I guess? I found a G40 in the Uni trash this last weekend, but I'm thinking of putting a lightweight OS into it and donating it to the major's common room at my University. IDK if it will even run software that comfortably, but one has got to try I guess?

G40 should be a full power P4. Not sure about the temperatures over there but here in NY, you could donate as a free warmer for those freezing students!

I ran a few different OSs on an L7500 C2D and with an HDD it was painfully slow. With an SSD that might change. I ran W7 on a T40 once w/ SSD and it wasn't horrible until anything over hello world was run. Then the Pentium M showed its real guts...or its lack there of. The L7500 kicks the crap out of the P4...so expect not much more than WinXP and Pinball...not to say thats a bad combo!
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

With Slimjet browser the web becomes usable again even on Pentium M. Other modern browsers are too bloated, and old but light browsers are too unsupported.

It is on full power P4, correct. Temperatures are about 2-12C right now, and today is nice and sunny outside with a chilling breeze - but this will go into the -3 to 7 range next month. Not as bad as NY (you're closer to Korea's temps right now), but bad enough that G40 can warm the room. It kept mine warm over the weekend as I was playing around with it.

Mine currently runs a 2.8GHz motherboard, because the one I found in the trash (at 3.0GHz) had dead mobo and LiOn battery and no AC adapter cord. So of course I drop 20usd on this other one I find on mercari haha.

With Fedora LXDE, it seems to at least run an OS, but the web does not load well. I would consider trying Slimjet, but it seems that is a Debian LXDE thing and I might have different plans completely for this computer soon.
