POLL: What's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors?

#1 Post by pianowizard » Fri Dec 28, 2018 2:43 pm

I was about to start a new thread asking whether anyone here likes the super-wide resolution of 3440x1440, typically found on 34" desktop monitors although some 35" monitors also have it, but then I decided to change this into a poll asking what's your favorite resolution for desktop monitors. When answering this poll, just assume that it's about whatever monitor size you prefer. For example, you may have different ideal resolutions for different sizes, but if your favorite monitor size is 24", just indicate what you feel is the optimal resolution for 24".

BTW, the poll can have up to only 16 options, so I have included only the 16 most common desktop monitor resolutions. Surprisingly I had to exclude only several resolutions. One of them was 2048x1536 (QXGA), which is often mentioned in the context of laptops and tablets, but my impression is that very few forum members have used QXGA desktop monitors (I seem to be the only one). Another resolution that's very common on 4:3 laptops is 1400x1050 (SXGA+), but very few desktop monitors have been SXGA+.

Let me make a prediction before people start responding to the poll: I predict that many will pick 1280x1024, 1600x1200, or 1920x1200.
Dell Latitude 7370 (QHD+, 2.84lb); HP Pavilion x2 12-b096ms (1920x1280, 3.14lb); Microsoft Surface 3 (1920x1280, 2.00lb);
Dell OptiPlex 5040 SFF (Core i5-6600); Acer ET322QK, T272HUL; Crossover 404K; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

Can I pick 22" 3840x2400 from the IBM T221 Big Bertha?

Other than that...dollar for dollar hands down: 24" 1920x1200. I only like them enough to get 7 of them.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

The highest possible. Basically everything larger than 0.25mm pixel is annoying and useless. Currently I use 20" 1600x1200.

I would say my prediction was probably wrong, because 1280x1024 has gotten only one vote so far.

Sorry, it's one of the 11 resolutions I cut, since I could list no more than 16 options. Among the 16 options, 2048x1152 is the rarest because only three or four models had it about 10 years ago, but the resolutions I cut are either even rarer, or are never mentioned on this forum. Also, for a while I really liked 2048x1152, so I felt I should include it because someone else might like it too. These are the excluded resolutions:

1400x1050 (only on a 20" ViewSonic)
1920x1920 (two Eizo monitors)
2048x1536 (21" IBM T210 and some greyscale medical monitors)
2560x2048 (a 21.3" NEC)
3280x2048 (a 30" NEC)
3840x1080 (a 49" Samsung)
3840x2400 (the IBM T220 and T221, both 22")
4096x2160 (a 31" LG)
4500x3000 (28" Microsoft Surface Studio)
5120x2880 (several brands' 27-inchers)
7680x4320 (a 32" Dell)

For a couple years I had 8 WUXGA monitors hooked up to the same minitower, all of them in portrait orientation. I still liked them even after getting a $1400 30" 2560x1600 monitor in early 2010 because in portrait mode 1200x1920 was still taller than 2560x1600, but WUXGA became irrelevant after I discovered 40" 3840x2160.

I suppose you would have picked 7680x4320 then. How much experience do you have with extremely high pixel densities? You are happy with Windows 10's ability to scale things up?

And I can't believe you are still using 20" 1600x1200. Why haven't you upgraded yet? If money is a concern, 27" 2560x1440 might be the best option. I was among the earliest adopters, shelling out $800+ in Sep 2010 on Dell's very first QHD display (the U2711 in my sig), but nowadays the cheapest ones are under $200. If you want to save space, the smallest QHD displays are 24".

Time. It takes at least one month or more to select monitor that isn't a total crap (uneven backlight, low PWM frequency, too high lowest brightness and tons of todays cutting cost issues). I can narrow it by the only two reliable vendors NEC and Eizo but still, I have no reason yet. An IPS panel without A-TW polarizer is not acceptable at all, it'd be a downgrade from the NEC 2090UXi. Waiting for OLED (or similar) to become common and reliable. As for money, I'd be worried to use anything below 1000 Euro tag but high price doesn't mean decent quality anymore these days.

Have a look at the Dell U2412M or U2415, both 24" IPS LED 1920x1200.
They've been around for a while, but have received (especially U2415) great reviews from all over.
If my HP L1965 19" 1280x1024 ever dies (bought new in March 2008), that would be the one I'd go for.

I only buy IPS monitors, but I am not as picky within the category.

My first LCDs were a pair of 20" DELLs - the 2007FP (1600x1200) and 2007WFP (1680x1050). Both are almost exactly 100PPI (0.254 dot pitch).

When I felt the itch, I've replaced them, again with DELLs - the U2410 (24" 1920x1200) and 2209WA (22" 1680x1050). This was mostly a physical size upgrade, although the extra width of the 24" 1920x1200 is nice. The PPI is lower on these - 94PPI and 90PPI, respectively, but I don't suffer from large pixel sizes.

The 20" DELLs were relegated to my old computer setups, where they are used to this day. At some point I also purchased an AOC i2353Ph for my parents (23" 1920x1080). I haven't used it as much, but when I did - it was good; It was a rather interesting model - cheaper than most alternatives, and one of the few ones that came in silver and not black (mom did not want a black monitor). It's ~96PPI, not far from the 24" WUXGA.

Then, for years, I had not built any new desk stations, and have not upgraded my monitors; I am very pleased that they all still work great (*knocks on wood*), and are still in use. The U2410 has seen the most use (to be fair - I replaced it once in the warranty period, so the monitor I now have is newer than they one I originally bought) - and it is the one I love best of the bunch; it is super-versatile, both in the available connectors (every major video standard, and audio input/output ports), and in the display modes - standard / wide gamut, 1:1 and 'aspect' modes, PIP/PBP (not that I ever used the latter). The only things it lacks is USB 3.0 (as it came out before that was standard) and CompactFlash (which was present on the older 2407/2408 models, but phased out).

After a long hiatus, I've finally built a new desktop this year, and felt that it warrants a serious monitor as well. If you asked me several years ago - what's a worthy upgrade to a 24" 1920x1200, I'd say - 30" 2560x1600; however, nowadays this segment is almost dead, and the monitors are very far from cost-efficient. So I bit the bullet and entered the high-DPI monitor era by getting a BenQ PD3200U (32" 3840x2160). That's a massive 137PPI. I am still adjusting but so far so good (at 125% scaling). The 32" UHD monitors are also not really cost-efficient (both larger and smaller screens are far cheaper), but I've decided after much deliberation that this is just the perfect size for me at this resolution.

The great thing about Windows 10 is that it has Aero Snap not only to screen halves, but quarters as well - so I can easily divide the screen into four equal FHD windows. If you want to use an older version of Windows, or some Linux distro that lacks this feature, there are plenty of third party utilities to enable it.

At work, things have been not as interesting. For a long time I worked with two 19" 1280x1024 Lenovo L192p monitors (the only VA monitors I've worked with extensively). Then I moved to two, and later three 20" IBM L200p. Now I have a pair of 24" DELL P2417H. They are only 1920x1080, not 1920x1200, but get the job done.

A few more votes have been cast. I must say I am VERY surprised that 3840x2160 is leading. Had I known "4K" is so popular on this forum I would have included more of the high resolutions that I excluded (see my previous post).

Thank goodness I am not as demanding as you are! But in a way I am much more demanding than you: there's no way I would have settled for 1600x1200 for all these years.

After a 15" 1024x768 LCD and a 19" 1280x1024, I got the Dell 2407WFP (1920x1200) in 2006 for $581.35 shipped. That was a really good deal then, made possible by two stackable coupon codes on dell.com.

Currently my monitors with the lowest pixel density are the 30" 2560x1600 LCDs in my sig, 100.6 DPI. I do find their pixels a little too big, because by now I've gotten very used to 40" (39.5" viewable) 3840x2160, which gives 111.5 DPI.

I completely agree. I do think 30" with 16:10 aspect ratio is a great form factor though, and I wish the 30" 3280x2048 panel with 128.9 DPI were much more common.

32" UHD panels are actually only 31.5", corresponding to 139.9 DPI. LCD manufacturers should stop cheating by rounding up! I don't scale at all on my 32" (31.5" viewable) Acer UHD monitor. For short-term use I don't mind, but for extended use I much prefer my 39.5" UHD monitors' 111.5 DPI.

Because there are no better options? 1920x1080 is downgrade of all older 1600x1200 or 1920x1200 ones. 2K resolutions 2560x1440 and 2560x1600 aren't so common so the 4K is the way to go.

If I upgraded it'd be 4K only. Currently even my phone has better resolution, 5.2" 2560 x 1440 OLED. That's why I am still waiting for OLED desktop monitors because once you try them, there is no way back :D Also the 2K high density on such small display still makes sense. I have Lumia 950 and 650, both have OLED dispays, but the difference between 5.2" 2560x1440 and 5" 1280x720 is very noticeable. I use the smallest font possible and it is very nice on the 950. Both OLED displays have no issues except the factory color calibration was terrible but you can adjust it.

No, not significant, and not immediately apparent (unless side by side). Some examination is required. I slightly prefer IPS because of the lack of color shift (only brightness/contrast loss) at angles, and also because actual response time is lower (and I do play games, not frequently anymore, but sometimes). But my 42" LCD TV is a VA, and it doesn't bother me.

Some of them, like the PD3200U, are actually 32"; others are indeed 31.5". It is not always easy to know (but I must say I probably would not have made this a critical aspect when deciding which monitor to get; it just so happened that the PD3200U which I preferred for a variety of reasons uses a 32" panel).

Eizo used S-PVA panels extensively in the past but moved to IPS as well. As for the "brightness/contrast loss", the A-TW polarizer resolves this issue. That's why I don't want to downgrade from my NEC 2090UXi to some cheap office grade only IPS panel that looks awful at first glance. During last few years vendors have found several ways to cheapen IPS panels (e-IPS, terrible uneven LED backlight with low PWM frequency, minimum brightness higher than 20cd/m2 and so on) that the IPS tag itself no longer guarantee any decent quality anymore. That's why buying a new monitor is too stressful for me, 99% of them is crap :) It took me two months of research and inspecting various (mostly [censored] ones) monitors to finally find the NEC 2090UXi.

Apparently, there are some downsides to A-TW (more than just cost):
From the description of a youtube video about the new non-A-TW 2690:

NEC reps says "There are good and bad points with the A-TW. Some color critical users do not like the green/magenta glow at each corner of the display, and a neutral gray is more acceptable. Also the contrast ratio is increased with this panel."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2pIysomGPI

My guess is that these "color critical users" that didn't like the A-TW are major corporate users that buy hundreds of high-end monitors.

I'd say that in general, if you compare to 10 years ago, the average quality of LCD monitors on the market has gone up, but so have our demands; and you seem to be particularly picky.

Voted for 1,920 x 1,080, because this is the resolution of my current desktop monitor. Not that it really is better than 3,820 x 2,160, but it is a very common resolution and also has some advantages for PC games (which I still occasionally like to play). As powerful as my ThinkPad P51 is, games in 4K UHD are unfortunately not really a possibility. I will probably upgrade to UHD when I get a PC that is powerful enough for PC games in 4K.

Funnily enough, my internal ThinkPad display of the P51 has a resolution of 4K. Admittedly, the extra sharpness is appreciated, but I mainly have this screen because it is better in terms of color reproduction than the stock FHD screen option. For the internal ThinkPad screen, I would prefer 2,560 x 1,440, as it is still not too high to be used without scaling on 15.6 inch. Unfortunately, this is not an option. In fact, I have not seen any 15.6 inch laptop with this resolution so far – it is either FHD or 4K. My W550s had a 3K (2,880 x 1,660) screen, but that resolution was already too high to be usable without scaling for me (just barely).

I'd say that in general, if you compare to 10 years ago, the average quality of LCD monitors on the market has gone up, but so have our demands; and you seem to be particularly picky.
Average ... but the distribution of the quality across all models is very uneven. I am picky as long as it looks terrible. Just use a sheet of blank paper and compare it side by side with white color on the monitor. Most of the gargabe monitors shows reddish, greenish or any other than white only color surface. It takes few seconds only to discover it. Calibration won't help because it is isolated into smaller areas of the screen only.

I run two identical 24" IPS 1920x1200 ThinkVision monitors except for the fact that once is IPS and once is VA and the difference is apparent...
Several years ago I had two Dell 2007FP's, one with IPS and the other with VA. Comparing them side by side I noticed a difference, but didn't find the difference significant. I did find it a little amusing that I had paid $150 for the VA one (new in 2008), and only $38 for the IPS one (used in 2013).

Some of them, like the PD3200U, are actually 32"; others are indeed 31.5".
I suspect the ones listed as 32" are just typos.

For 15.6" laptops I would prefer 2560x1440 and 2880x1660 over both FHD and UHD. I think I searched actively for 2880x1660 Thinkpads on eBay for a while, but eventually decided to give up on traditional laptops altogether, in favor of convertibles and detachables.

My Dell 3008WFP had this problem, and it was extremely pronounced, but it bugged me for only a week or so, after which I couldn't care less.

I suspect you are wrong; the panels are listed as 32.0" in the manufacturer's datasheets, which also has 31.5" panels in their portfolio. I may measure the viewable area later to be sure.

I wonder if this falls into the same category of how a all TVs in BestBuy(or circuitcity or whatever store you shop for TVs in) are listed as 50 or 70" but in fine print it says 49.5" or 69.5" viewable respectively.

Maybe it's the same marketing BS here?

The PD3200U panel is definitely 32.0", not 31.5". The dimensions I measured match the datasheet almost down to the millimeter:

Looking at the poll results, I am surprised that more people picked 1920x1080 than 1920x1200. On this forum there has been so much discussion of the superiority of WUXGA vs. FHD.

Thanks for measuring. I just updated my Excel file listing all the sizes and resolutions of laptop and desktop LCD panels.

FHD is just a lot more common than WUXGA. Also, back in the day, many office monitors had the resolution 1,680 x 1,050 (WSXGA+). When 16:9 came around, those weren't replaced by 1,600 x 900 (HD+), but by 1,920 x 1,080. Obviously, this is a comparison that is a lot more favorable for FHD – might be a reason for the popularity of FHD.

But in this poll I am asking about what people consider to be the ideal resolution, which isn't necessarily the best resolution they have actually used. Whenever I use FHD I feel that it's too short -- for instance it's not tall enough for viewing many PDF files at 100% -- so even if FHD were the highest resolution I had ever used, I would still have voted for 2048x1152 or 1920x1200 because I would extrapolate from my past experience and expect that having more rows of pixels than 1080 would help.

Have a look at the Dell U2412M or U2415, both 24" IPS LED 1920x1200.
I think you were recommending these to Puppy. Unfortunately he is very super incredibly picky, so these probably won't work.

One of the first expensive monitors I bought was the Dell 2405... funny story... the first LCD monitor I ever paid for was a HP 15" back in 2002 or 03? This was when these were several hundred. They were excess merchandise... ie. buy 5 x HP rack servers get a free monitor.

Anyway... I wasnt too impressed with the line of Chinese 22" units coming out and the Dell 2405 was revolutionary.

Then I also got a Dell 2407 HC? HW? a while later.

So this cemented 1,920 x 1,200 as a favourite res. although at 24" I find there's some need to move your head to grab in all the detail.

Otherwise I'm not too fussy. I tend to dislike cheap 22" FHD units as I feel there's not enough height.

Maybe close to 10yrs ago I bought a Dell SP2309... this monitor although its a VA or TN crapper has a unique 2,048 x 1,152 res and its high enough and compact enough.

And that's as far as I go. I see some sub $200 27" FHD units now but I wonder if its too big? Also I havent got into the crazy high res or high refresh units. Like I dont have any DP monitors.

Me too. I had one or two when they were still a fairly novel entity but the novelty wore off quickly. But Acer, Dell and I think ViewSonic have 20" (19.5" viewable) FHD monitors which are not a bad idea if you want to save desk space. 20" 1600x1200 is even better for saving desk space and is taller, but FHD is better for watching videos and viewing two windows side by side. I have the Dell D2015Hf, which I find rather cute, despite its having only VGA input.

Yes I too had the Dell sp2309 about 11 years ago, and then bought another one a couple years later. Acer, Samsung and probably Asus also had 23" 2048x1152 monitors, and I had the Samsung one which I didn't like as much as the Dell. I liked 2048x1152 because: 1) it's what "Full HD" should have been; 2) it actually has more pixels than WUXGA; and 3) it's almost the highest resolution that VGA supports.

During the Black Friday and holiday sales there was a Dell 32" FHD monitor for like $120, and a couple of 27" FHD ones for $110. All these were IPS panels and easily available, i.e. they weren't "doorbusters" that only people waiting in line overnight could get. I was actually somewhat tempted by that Dell, but 2560x1440 would be far more appropriate for these sizes.

Are we still talking desktop monitors like the title says or TV displays? That's why I didnt mention 4k60 or HDR or anything that is actually interesting...

I would love to see a 24-27" LCD w/ 4k 60 HDR but these really arent moving on PCs.
