T42 / T42p - Wi-fi chipset upgrade
Hello.
I have a Thinkpad T42p which is in the upgrade process.
Since that the original intel PRO 2200 b/g is old and I want to replace with the most advanced chip compatible with this device.
Someone knows which the most advanced wifi chipset module to buy?
I saw that it's need compatible with mini PCI type III, but I dont know if it`s type A or B.
Someone knows if the wifi chipset compatible with T42/T42p is: mini PCI type III A or B?
I still need to search more to buy the correct wifi module.
I saw this model:
WMIA-251GN
802.11b/g/n Mini PCI Module, Atheros AR9227, 2T2R
‧ Standard: 802.11b/g/n
‧ Interface: Mini PCI Type III B
‧ Chipset: Atheros AR9227
‧ Antenna: 2 x U.FL connectors, 2T2R
‧ Data rate up to 300Mbps
‧ Enhanced wireless security: 64/128-bit WEP, WPA, WPA2
‧ Support Linux
on ebay, there are Atheros AR-9223 chipset at great cost.
Will work with T42p?!
So, it`s correct that the wireless N is the most fast connection possible.
I think that combo wifi plus bluetooth is available only by mini pci-e connections, right?
I will apreciate your opinion,
Thank you for read my post!

Re: T42 / T42p - Wi-fi chipset upgrade
You'll need to apply the "no-1802" hack first in order to remove the whitelisting from BIOS but the card that you're looking at should work after that, as long as it's in the proper mini PCI format..
I've been using TP Link 861N cards which utilize the same chipset for a decade or so now in A3x and T4x systems.
Happy upgrading.

Advanced, as in the most feature-rich wireless adapter? That would be the Atheros AR9220 or the Atheros AR9160.BlueFalcon wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 3:53 pmSomeone knows which the most advanced wifi chipset module to buy?
Both Type IIIA and Type IIIB will fit in just fine, as long as it is a Type III. The only difference that a Type IIIA card has over a Type IIIB card, is the card's length (seen from the side of the card). A typical Type IIIA card is about 6.35mm longer than a Type IIIB card. That is not too much of a difference to worry about, though.BlueFalcon wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 3:53 pmI saw that it's need compatible with mini PCI type III, but I dont know if it`s type A or B.

Yes, it will work once you have applied the no-1802 patch as ajkula66 has stated. Apply the no-1802 patch first, then install the card that you have bought.BlueFalcon wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 3:53 pmWMIA-251GN

Based on how there are no such abgn+ac MiniPCI wireless adapters sold on the market, of course.BlueFalcon wrote: ↑Sun Jan 13, 2019 3:53 pmSo, it`s correct that the wireless N is the most fast connection possible.

In this case, yes. Technically, I believe that it is possible for a Bluetooth adapter to be integrated into a MiniPCI card (those wireless+modem combos?), although nobody has done that yet.

Re: T42 / T42p - Wi-fi chipset upgrade
It's possible on mini-PCIe and M.2 because they have USB signals on the connector (the BT part is almost always USB-based). I don't know if the Mini-PCI connector includes USB signals, though I doubt it.

Re: T42 / T42p - Wi-fi chipset upgrade
It probably does, since the MSI MP54GBT3 seems to have Bluetooth integrated on a MiniPCI package. It looks like it is powered by some Ralink chip, too.

Re: T42 / T42p - Wi-fi chipset upgrade
Hello.
Thank you for your posts, guys!
Well, I searched on google, and, really, there are no modern combo wireless N plus bluetooth 3.0 or above, may be too sophiscated to this old interface (MINI-PCI). Wireless N plus bluetooth 3.0 or above are available only to interfaces pci-e and m2, or half pci (I do not understand about this interface)
So, yes, about most advanced, I think that is about versatility (dual band), because it, I think that the Atheros AR-9220, may be an excellent option, however I don't saw performance tests over others chips, as AR-9227 or AR-9223.
As the AR-9220 is a dual-band Wireless N chip. Because it, at this moment, until I found other, it's my favorite chip.
A negative thing about AR-9220 is that WPA2 is not supported.
About MSI MP54GBT3 is a very interesting combo module, however, wireless N is not supported and a bluetooth version is slow.
But I have a doubt about this upgrade.
Is the original bluetooth of the T42p integraded on the wireless chip?
After the upgrade with a wirells N wifi card, the original bluetooth will work normally pressing Fn + F5?
I'm sorry about this asks, because I don't understand how it works.
I only will purchase the components and I will go to my trusted technician to make the upgrade.

Re: T42 / T42p - Wi-fi chipset upgrade
I don't think that they are too sophisticated for the old MiniPCI interface, it is more of that there isn't enough demand for modern MiniPCI wireless adapters.
The AR9220 does support WPA2, and I used to own one that connected to a WPA2-secured network without a problem.
I don't think you would need a performance comparison, because the only difference between the AR9220 and the AR9223/AR9227 are the wireless standards that they support. The AR9220 is a 802.11abgn chip, but the AR9223/AR9227 are 802.11bgn chips.
No, it is integrated onto the CDC card. The CDC card usually serves as a modem, though. In your case, the CDC card is a modem + Bluetooth combo card.
Yes, the Bluetooth that you have will still work normally as it should.
That's fine, it's better to ask questions to know more of what you are trying to do.

Ok, Screamer,Thank you for you post!
I read a datasheet about AR9220 and threre are nothing about WPA2, but, if you said that support, excellent!
I purchased a WNC-DNMA-92.
Thank you for your explanations about bluetooth.
About the wifi card, I want only upgrade to get more speed at 2.4 and 5ghz.
About the upgrade, I want to prepare this laptop to run old (win 98se/xp) and current os (win 10/linux)
Thank you!

The last MS OS that will install on it is W7.
Happy upgrading.
