noting: T430 keyboard will not work in T420

#1 Post by angelofthesouth » Thu Jan 24, 2019 3:58 pm

I ruined my T420's keyboard by accidentally tearing or snapping the ribbon cable. I accidentally bought a useless (due to a broken screen) T430 at eBay, and, keeping it around, decided I might as well see if its keyboard worked in my T420. It doesn't. It fits in well enough with a little effort, but once plugged in, its keys enter the wrong characters.

I haven't encountered the problem of keys entering the wrong characters when I briefly tested a T430 keyboard in a T420. Which keys input which characters?
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), T490 (20N3), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG
X61 7673-V2V, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G, X32 (IPS Screen), A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

Argh. Now I can't answer your question, because the T420 I was working on has suddenly developed a presumably unrelated problem: no video on the screen while the computer appears to be running (I can see the fan spinning). I'm checking to see whether I accidentally disconnected a cable somewhere, but I don't think so. I can't believe the coincidence. I should try to hook up my TV screen--I've never needed or wanted to connect an external monitor, but the Thinkpads have connections for it, don't they?--and see if the computer's still dead beyond the fan spinning, which would suggest the CPU just happened to die while was I working on it.
