Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
Hi, how do you do?
So, I have a Thinkpad T60 Type 1951 15' inch screen with the Intel GMA 950. I decided to change its cpu from a Core Duo T2300 1.66 Ghz to a Core 2 Duo T7400 2.16 Ghz. I have a revision 3 board and my bios version is 2.11, I decided to not update it since I found out Core 2 Duo processors on this motherboard require a bios version of 2.06 at least so I thought I'm ok.
The bios recognizes the processor but Windows 7 32 bits does not. It gives me a blue screen of death with this "Uncorrectable Hardware Error". But it starts in safe mode without an error, which is odd.
Do you think I've got a defective cpu?
Thank you!

Bios 2.12 had cpu updates. Update your bios to the latest.

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
I've just updated the bios to v2.27 but it still gives me the same blue screen of death error. I'm assuming the processor is defective because I swapped it back to my old Core Duo T2300 1.66 Ghz and it's running good again, in fact I'm typing this message from my T60.
What do you think? I wanted some extra performance from this Core 2 Duo T7400 2.16 Ghz, do you think it's worth to buy a Core Duo T2600 2.16 Ghz? I've found one pretty cheap.
Thanks again!

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
A T2600 would give you a bit of a speed boost so give that a try, but an SSD would speed it up much more.
You might need to load fresh Intel drivers to fix that BSOD with the T7400.
Good solid Thinkpads the T6x models.

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
Did you try to reinstall the operating system? I have a feeling that it might be Windows itself, since I did recall that a BSoD may happen once the processor has been swapped for something significantly different. It might be worth it to give it a try.General9913 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 29, 2019 4:48 pmI've just updated the bios to v2.27 but it still gives me the same blue screen of death error. In my opinion, I don't think that it is worth the purchase. The Core Duo T2600 does not have SSSE3, EM64T, and the extra 2 MiB of L2 cache offered in the Core 2 Duo T7400. Also, the Core 2 Duo T7400's architecture executes more instructions per cycle on average, when compared to the Core Duo T2600's architecture. Remember, the Core Duo T2600 is essentially two (Dothan) Pentium M cores on 1 die with a shared L2 cache.General9913 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 29, 2019 4:48 pmWhat do you think? All of these improvements may not be noticeable however, unless you are running something that demands a lot of processing power (e.g. DeSmuME 0.9.11).

Also, the T7400 is 64-bit, where the T2600 is still only 32-bit.

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
Thanks everyone!
I figured out what went wrong, I updated the bios (First time I ever did it) with the C2D T7400 inside it (Yeah I assumed the risk of bricking it if it was really defective but I supposed it weren't since the bios recognized it and I could go in W7 safe mode) but I didn't turn off the laptop, I just reboot and windows was probably still reading the old bios 2.11.
So everything is alright! I'm typing this message from my T60!
I've noticed the fan can't handle this new processor very well, I've undervolted it with RMClock 2.35 to 1.038V at 13x step but it still runs pretty hot, 69ºC at full load undervolted compared to the Core Duo T2300 68ºC full load with stock voltage is odd! Not to mention that at idle it runs about 3~5ºC hotter than before.
I've heard Merom runs hotter than Yonah but to be honest it surprised me. By the way, I've used Arctic MX-4.
Thanks!

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
This was known to the designers at the time, actually; that's why the 'Napa Refresh' T60 models, that came with Core 2 processors stock, have a revised heatsink/fan design, although I do not know how much of a difference it makes on integrated GPU models. In any case, none of the assemblies in the T60 line is considered optimal, and that's why many modders were pulling in fan assemblies from T61/T500 series for improved cooling.General9913 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 30, 2019 6:46 pmI've noticed the fan can't handle this new processor very well, I've undervolted it with RMClock 2.35 to 1.038V at 13x step but it still runs pretty hot, 69ºC at full load undervolted compared to the Core Duo T2300 68ºC full load with stock voltage is odd! Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
I see. I'll check out if I applied the thermal paste correctly, I guess I applied less than necessary.
By the way, do you recomend tpfancontrol for this T60? The fan is always on in the 2800~3000 RPM range but it can't handle AIDA64's cpu stress test very well, 71ºC during a 15 min test undervolted to 1.025V. While a Core 2 Duo T8300 2.4 Ghz laptop I've here undervolted to 1.087 reaches 62ºC during the same test, the fan runs much faster and louder.
I use tpfancontrol in my X31 because the bios activates the fan only when it reaches 68ºC which is awful. I really love my X31, after I undervolted it to 6x 0.828V and 15x 1.244V it operates as a fanless laptop while idling, that's amazing!
Thanks for your help!

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
I run TPFanControl on my T60, but I never used it for anything other than monitoring. 71C temps wouldn't bother me, although they may be high indeed for an undervolted CPU.
I do recall that the BIOS defaults on the X32 seemed awkward to me, just like on your X31. It causes a cycle where the fan starts, cools the CPU to get under the low threshold, stops, then as the CPU heats up, starts again. It's actually more annoying than having the fan on all the time.
The rule I use for applying thermal paste is - put a pea-sized amount at the center of the CPU die, and let the heatsink squash and spread it. Never needed anything more than this. For a laptop CPU - probably even a bit less than that.

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
71C? That honestly doesn't look so bad for an undervolted Core 2 Duo T7400, especially with that fan speed.General9913 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 11:35 amBy the way, do you recomend tpfancontrol for this T60? I would only suggest TPFanControl to reduce your processor's temperature by forcing the fan to run at a higher speed, although I don't think that would be needed.
Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
I think it might be a good idea to repast the cpu and gpu. After the last time I took my system apart and oiled the fan bearing the temperature was down by 5-10 degrees Celsius, I don't know what I did differently but now I can use my Intel graphics T601 with fan off and temp ~60 degrees under normal load (surfing internet etc.) if undervolted to 0.95V .
Ambient temperature is also a major factor and if you live in Brazil I imagine your room is warmer than normal compared to most in US and Europe?
(A fan off or running at 1500-2000 rpm resulting in an almost completely silent laptop is a real blessing, I have set min to 1600-2000-2500 rpm and even under full load it almost never is above 2000 which is almost silent if fan bearing is oiled.)

Chicago had -55 Fahrenheit (-48 Centigrade/Celsius) the other day.
In my neck of the woods it was 'only' -6 F (-21 C).

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen
Ohh yes, it's pretty hot this time of the year indeed!
I opened it again and repasted, I thought I applied little thermal grease but nope, I applied more than needed. So now I applied the correct pea sized amount. Temps stayed about the same with an undervolt value of 1.050V, yes I had to back up two steps after windows gave me a blue screen!
I installed TPFanControl and configured it to fan 6 at 64ºC. Fan 6 runs at 3500~3600 RPM. I can tell you it's much better to use it my lap now! I also configured it to 50ºC Fan 1 so now it idles fanless and runs most of the time in Fan 1 which is about 2500~2800 RPM but I think it's an error since it's quieter than bios default. The default bios values runs constantly at 2800~3000 RPM.
By the way, I noticed Fan 3, 4 and 5 are the same speed (Which are the same as bios default values by the way) and Fan 6 and 7 are equal too. Something similar happens with my X31 as well!
Thanks everyone for your support!
