LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
LG Gram 17 is a big laptop that weighs less than 3 pounds
https://liliputing.com/2018/12/lg-gram- ... ounds.html
It has 2560 x 1600 (very low resolution on 17" size) but 16:10 display Lenovo "can't" get.

Re: LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
Exciting news! Thanks for sharing! I am happy with the screen resolution, and of course with the weight. 2560x1600 on 17" gives 177.6 DPI, which is not too high and not too low for Windows at 100% scaling. I don't like the keyboard, and in general I am skeptical of LG products (have had bad luck with a TV, smartphone and monitor in the past) but on the whole this is a compelling laptop. I do wish it were half a pound or so heavier, because a 17-incher weighing a mere 2.95 lbs has got to be very fragile.

Re: LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
But doesn't LG make their own screens? That may be how they can get a 16:10 one without much trouble.

Re: LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
2560x1600 @ 17" is around 177 DPI which is still more pixel density than
2048x1536 @ 15" 170 DPI
1920x1200 @ 15.4" 147 DPI
1920x1080 @ 14" 157 DPI
So it'd be like the old QXGA but wider. And that was already too small for lots of people.

Easier said than done....and most consumers don't care. Therefore..its not terribly profitable.

It is not very well known today, but IBM used to make its own displays under the brand-name IDTech. Notably, they made the IPS Flexview screens for late IBM ThinkPads as well as the "Big Bertha" monitor. IBM withdrew from the joint-venture, because it was unprofitable for them.

Ahhhhh....Big Bertha. I'll take two! I really want to get my hands on two of those....but it will probably be a pipe dream.

Re: LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
Hmmm I wonder how WQXGA will be in 17", I thought the Apple 27" iMac was perfect.
I found QHD to be too much on 14" (X1C3) and on 15.6" (Zbook Studio G3) for my eyes... but I think its due to the display looking 'grainy' like SXGA+ X61T.
At least they put the touchpad in the middle and not offset to the left.

Yes, I'd love to have a trackpoint for my 17" notebook. I'm not into paying much more than $500 for a notebook these days, so the Gram would be out for me, but sub three pounds on a 17" notebook is pretty amazing.Thinkpad4by3 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 06, 2018 9:34 amIf it had a trackpoint...I might have considered getting it.

Re: LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
I vaguely recall that about 3 to 4 years ago, I commented on this forum that my dream laptop would be a 17-incher weighing 4 lbs and with 2560x1440 resolution. Compared to that hypothetical dream laptop, this LG Gram 17 weighs a full pound less, has a higher resolution, and a larger screen area due to the 16:10 aspect ratio. I agree this is "pretty amazing".
Too small only if people don't scale the text larger. Most of us weren't happy with Windows XP's or even Windows 7's ability to scale, but Windows 10 seems to do a reasonably good job. That being said, I am happy with Windows' default scaling for all pixel densities below 220 DPI, for example my Microsoft Surface 3 which is 213.7 DPI. For me this LG's 177.6 DPI panel would be very easy on the eye.

Now shipping from Amazon.
I don’t plan on using scaling. It should be fine at 17”.
Retina at native resolution on 15” was just a tad too small for my liking.

Re: LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
After three days, it is going back. This is not a laptop that anybody on this forum would enjoy.
The screen was perfect by the way. I once commented that 1440p at 17" would be nice. As it turns out, 1600p at 17" is perfect with no scaling.
It was everything else that was the problem. Build quality, buggy UEFI, keyboard flex. Scratches in the screen from the keyboard. Backlight bleed at the top left due to flex from the plastic housing. The UEFI would lose the date/time and reset to 01/01/1998 constantly. The CPU would overheat and shutdown under minimal load....once even during the ncurses-based Slackware installer. Completely unacceptable.
I know that most review sites parrot one another, and the one complaint that I see the mindless tech enthusiast reviewers regurgitating is that there is an offset keyboard, but that actually did not bother me. Centered on the machine itself, without looking and trying to find the home row, I only ended up two keys off to the right. In other words, the net effect is that the numpad only seems to shift two keys off center, and not four keys as would be expected. Not nearly as bad as the idiot reviewers make it seem, and certainly nowhere near as badly offset as say, a P52, or even my P71. I did not mind the key feedback, but I hated the chassis flex.
I don't know who the target audience for this laptop is. People who know they want 16:10 at a resolution that doesn't integer scale, and who are willing to pay $1700+ for such a machine are probably not the people who want consumer-grade trash that might not last the first month of daily use.
So I'm thinking the laptop is just a tech preview for LG displays. Lenovo needs to get their hands on this display and offer a 17" X1 Pro.
Back to hauling around the P71 all over the globe, I guess.

2560x1600 at 17" is perfect. This shows the stock Windows 10, but I used OpenBSD+Window Maker and Ubuntu + Gnome-Shell.

Re: LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
What kind of surface treatment does the screen have, is it matte?
Do you know the color depth (bpp)?
Do you know which model screen it is exactly?
"read-edid" (debian linux and derivatives at least) would dump the screen name, or you can use sysfs, for instance identifies the HV150UX1-100 in my R61, the LG may be in a different directory to the LVDS in drm/ since it is likely to interface via eDP.
It may be possible to use that screen in the W700 with some effort.

Re: LG Gram 17 - 16:10 display
I agree it's a pity. At 5.27 lbs it's also a little heavy by 2019 standards, although this still makes it the lightest 17" 1920x1200 laptop ever, beating the 6.6-lb late 2011 Apple MacBook Pro by a fairly wide margin.

Dell's 17-inch Precision 5750 mobile workstation and similar XPS 17 9700 gaming model get leaked specs
In the leaked slides, Dell advertises the Precision 5750 as the world’s smallest 17-inch mobile workstation. It weighs only 4.7 lbs and appears to have a fairly thin profile for the specs that it integrates. Speaking of specs, this model will integrate a 4-sided Infinity IGZO display produced by Sharp with 92% display/body ratio, 16:10 aspect ratio and HDR400 certification.
