X201s with Intel 7260 wifi - no bluetooth?

#1 Post by Edward Mendelson » Sun Feb 10, 2019 4:10 pm

I'm getting ready to sell a maxed-out ThinkPad X201s which has an Intel 7260 wi-fi card (a replacement for the original Lenovo card) - and a modded BIOS that removes Lenovo's whitelist. The machine dual-boots Windows 7 (32-bit) and Windows 10 (64-bit).

As far as I can tell, there's no bluetooth available on either system. Fn+F5 brings up a menu with wifi but no bluetooth, and there's no sign of bluetooth in the Device Manager.

I seem to remember that this is normal when you swap the slow Lenovo card for an Intel card. If anyone knows any details, I'll be grateful to learn them.

I found this solution: (the very last post on page 2)
Last week I noticed that some people were able to use this card by insulating "Pin 51" which allowed the bluetooth to work.

Anyhow I decided to try it, and it works.

Pin 51 is the last contact on the far right of the strip when viewing the side of the card that contains the antenna connections.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
Lenovo: X240, X250, T440p, T480, M900 Tiny.

Well, that's certainly worth a try! Thank you! Now that you were generous enough to get into this thread, here's an ignorant question: How do I insulate that last pin on the right?

Kapton tape or some form of insulating tape.

Last time I did anyting like that, I used "Heat proof" tape as I have plenty lying around from making my personal design mugs and that worked perfectly fine ;)

Thanks. Will try. Just wrap some tape carefully around the last pin?

I isolated pin 51 on a 7260 card in my X201s, and also in my X61s. No luck with either one, after installing bluetooth drivers, etc.

Both these machines came without the Lenovo bluetooth daughtercard in the lid, and I don't want to try installing one. Is there another wifi card that might work well in place of the 7260?

Both X201s (42T0969) and X61s (39T0497) have the (optional) bluetooth module mounted in the lid, along the bottom.
Have a look in their respective HMMs.

I was trying to avoid taking apart the lid, but this makes it sound easy enough, at least on the X61s:

Try putting the card in the WWAN slot. The WLAN slot in some older models do not have USB signals wired in.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

AFAIK you won't have wifi in the WWAN slot!
