IBM x41 with 778 Pentium M?

#1 Post by SabrinaBella » Thu Feb 07, 2019 10:07 pm

These seem rare that are non tablet, but I would love to add one of these to my collection for my portable needs. I notice there are plenty of tablet versions available, but is the weight difference that much of a difference? Any help would be greatly appropriated!

Tablet is much heavier and bulkier due to the extra depth.

X41:
4-cell without X4 UltraBase: 10.5" x 8.3" x .81-1.06"; 268mm x 211mm x 20.6-26.9mm
with battery: 2.7 lb (1.23kg)
8-cell without X4 UltraBase: 10.5" x 9.3" x .81-1.06"; 268mm x 237mm x 20.6-26.9mm
8-cell battery models: 3.3 lb (1.49kg);
X41 Tablet:
4-cell: 10.8" x 9.5" x 1.14-1.26"; 274mm x 242mm x 29-32mm
8-cell: 10.8" x 10.5" x 1.14-1.26"; 274mm x 266mm x 29-32mm
4-cell battery models: 3.5 lb (1.61kg); 8-cell battery models: 4.0 lb (1.84kg)

Heavier due to the hinge, digitizer and protective glass on the screen.

The best option would be the X41 without the tablet feature, but these are so difficult to find in good condition. Hopefully somebody in the forum has a spare one they can sell. Greatly appreciate the help :)

I have one actually. Since my real love is R, A, G and Z-series I have no great interest in X-types.

This particular one I own, however, is in a close-to-perfect inner shape. Drop me a PM if interested.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

I've been looking at the G series and those are workhorse thinkpads, even if they were "made by acer" :/ Those can go up to a 3.5Ghz Prescott processor with virtual core (hyper threading). They also have a dedicated geforce graphics (better drivers) and still bare the original IBM branding before the lenovo transition. The G Thinkpads are a true example of a international business machine! <3

Off-topic: I don't think they were made by Wistron/Acer.

The G40 and the G41's motherboards were manufactured by Quanta, judging by their schematics' names (G40 = Quanta BF1, G41 = Quanta BF4). Additionally, the G40 and the G41's plastic parts were manufactured by Elitek, which can be easily told by the stickers that were pasted on the parts.

The G50 is a little different, as Foxconn made the motherboards instead, but the plastics were still handled by Elitek.

Let's be honest here, Prescott was not a good architecture for its time, even with its hyper-threading capability. It was also hampered by insufficient memory bandwidth in this case, which was caused by the G41's 82852GME memory controller hub lacking dual-channel support for DDR1 RAM modules. This meant a theoretical maximum memory bandwidth of 2666MB/s, which was 1.6x lower than what a 533MT/s Prescott would have needed for optimal operation (4266MB/s).

Well, the GeForce's better driver advantage is rendered null by the fact that this was a GeForce FX Go5200. This particular graphics chip was using the NV34 core, which was the very same core that was being used in the GeForce FX 5200 (approximately equivalent to a GeForce4 MX 440). To make things worse, the GeForce FX Go5200 is slower than the GMA 950 in gaming. It does not have a native driver for Windows 7 either, unlike the GMA 950.

Wow, that's truly awful.

IMO all Netburst iterations (Williamette, Northwood, Prescott) were bad. On the flip side, it allowed AMD to take the lead with K8/Clawhammer, forcing Intel to drop Netburst and develop the Pentium M, and eventually the Core achitecture.

Yes, that's true; however for a short period of time (before reaching the clock frequency / heat wall which marked the dead-end of the architecture), the top-of-the-line P4s with hyperthreading were still beating the top-of-the-line AMD could offer. Only the first Athlon64's started truly beating the P4s.

HT-capable Northwoods are especially remembered fondly, because they were sometimes outperforming same-clock Prescotts with lower heat output.
