Reversing a replaced X250 Trackpad with original Trackpad - Get 1-3-3-1 beeps when booting up

#1 Post by niche » Sun Feb 24, 2019 9:53 am

Hi all,

I've seen others had this problem but I can't see any solutions!

I had an X240 and replaced the "trackpad" with a 3rd party one - worked fine for ages. I'm now selling it so re-fitted the original trackpad. It worked for a while but now beeps 1-3-3-1 when it boots up. When I unplug the trackpad it boots fine - just no trackpad of course.

I thought I may have damaged the cable so bought one on ebay -but the same happens on this (new) replacement.

I'm on the latest BIOS and the RAM is fine.

Any other suggestions please? Even if I re-plug the 3 button trackpad that has been fine -it now beeps 1-3-3-1 on bootup. Wish I'd left it alone now!

thanks

Take the RAM-module out, use a small brush or compressed air to clean the RAM-slot.
(If you try to boot now, it still beeps 1-3-3-1 (meaning: no ram).
Clean the RAM-module's gold contacts on both sides with an eraser till they shine again.
Remove any eraser remnants before reinsertion.
Still beeping?
BTW: X240 only takes 1, 2, 4 or 8 GB RAM.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!

Do you by any chance have the adapter for the 3rd SSD in there?
(Metal plate under the internal front-battery).
Having the cable inserted, but no drive [or a defective one] in there, will also prevent booting.

Ah, I've been there and done that.
Will prevent, but it will at least turn on the screen and tell you (without resulting in BIOS beep codes).

When you re-inserted your cable for the trackpad, you didn't chip off a part of the plastic connector by forcing it in too hard (I hope)?

No. I was really really careful as I thought i'd done that on the original so had to buy a replacement, which sadly made no difference :-(

I see. The only other thing that comes to mind would be the difference between ALPS and Synaptics trackpads, but I'm not sure it makes that big of a difference.

Frankly, if I had an already retrofitted X240 with the X250 trackpad, I would be really happy and give you a top rating. I think it is fine to sell it with the known-working X250 trackpad.

[Anyway, maybe your next Thinkpad could be an X250*.]

*Yes, I am biased.

Did you damage the cable at all by over flexing it?

The original - possible - but as per the original post I bought a replacement cable which I was VERY careful with but no luck. I've read of several other people with the same experience but no solution either :-(

Are you sure nothing got into the connector on the motherboard itself? I would use some air and clean out the connector on the mobo. Also if you could add some pictures of everything relating to the trackpad and its connections, that might help.

Also I would recommend running memtest86+ just to check. You never know what might show up. I know you said the RAM is fine, but I had wierd issues with my T430s doing something kinda similar so....

thanks. Took some time to clean it up, but sadly no luck. I've also been monitoring Ebay and managed to get a bargain refurbished x240 which arrives tomorrow.

Assuming it works all ok, I should have enough to work out the problem!

Once I get started I'll update and also post some photos, I'm hoping it will be simpler to troubleshoot.. I guess we'll see.!

OK, so for anyone interested I have received a 2nd X240 to try and find out the problem.

The good news is that my motherboard works fine on the "donor" X240 so i haven't broken anything :-)
What surprised me is that this "new" X240 has a different setup for the trackpad - in that it is "sealed in" - my one is screwed in and easy to change - so now I understand why people talk of having to prize it out. I'll take some photos incase people are interested.

I did also get another $10 cable -new and yet with this cable (which looks identical) I still get the 1-3-3-1 on my original trackpad/keyboard.
I will keep trying but I have found other people who had this 1-3-3-1 beep when doing the same swap of trackpad - and no-one seems to have posted a resolution - infact people are saying they had to leave it disconnected and use an external mouse :-(

The RAM tests fine and now i have "my RAM and motherboard" working fine in a donor X240 i know it is something else. Really frustrating though.

Any other ideas welcome.

*SOLVED* Re: Reversing a replaced X240 Trackpad with original Trackpad - Get 1-3-3-1 beeps when booting up

#15 Post by niche » Mon Mar 25, 2019 10:41 am

OK, so I have finally worked this one out.

In changing the X240 "upgraded" 3 button Trackpad to the original "clunkpad" I managed to damage the ribbon cable but ALSO the motherboard. I know this as a new ribbon cable still made the dreaded 1-3-3-1 beep. I got hold of another cheap refurb X240 device and put that motherboard into my machine - and 100% worked.

When I put the motherboard in the other "loaner' device I didn't connect the trackpad as it was just too fiddly and I didn't want to disturb that unit. So I was wrong to assume the motherboard of my old machine was ok - it was - but just not when using a trackpad!

So - be careful out there. As per my earlier posts - I've seen 3 or 4 others with this same problem (usually when upgraded from clunkpad to Trackpad though..) I'm assuming I damaged the ribbon cable which shorted something out on the motherboard. Disconnecting the ribbon from the trackpad/clunkpad (once "broken" neither work ) stops the beeps - but then you have no mouse/trackpad.

Hope this helps someone. I got a real non loaner X240 motherboard for around $40, so not too bad in the scheme of things...
