High cpu usage on t440s

#1 Post by manolis kokotsakis » Sat Mar 02, 2019 7:07 pm

Hi,have a T 440s i7. The cpu usage with windows 10 is 30% even if i dont have anything active. Not even the browser. Is this normal on windows 10 ?
Exept that, there are so many things running on task manager that i dont believe are need to run. Intel programs, Thinkpad programs and on and on...
Which one of them can i stop the from running ? What else can i do ?
Thanks for your time.

Shutdown all the unneeded W10 spyware and stop W10 from uploading your system to other users.

It is a while since I have used W10 but you can research on the internet. Check your data uploaded and downloaded to investigate further.

How long have you had the machine and how long do you let it sit? What version of W10 do you have and do you have updates deferred?

You say that CPU usage is 30%, but which processes use it?

You have to check data uploaded and downloaded through your network icon on the taskbar. I found data usage in services couldn't be trusted.

In reality it is probably updating to the latest version which is 1809 I think. It is probably safer to defer updates but that is your call.

I would ramp up your W10 knowledge database and this forum won't do that for you.

The only thing I see there is the svchost responsible for Windows Update taking 25% of the CPU. That's completely normal when searching for updates.

It may have gotten stuck. Have you tried rebooting or are you just sending PC to standby every time?

1) Try restarting the PC. Shutdown and restart are not the same thing in Windows 10.
2) You can try the suggestions to disable automatic updates here. This may also reduces the frequency of update search (not sure).

If you don't care about automatic updates, just disable them.

I did from services. I set it to manual. Processor went down to 2% of use.
Now i have to turn it on manually ? How often ?
This is not a problem itself of installing updates ? I mean, even if i turn it on , will it work ? Or again will search for ever ?

If it hasn't searched for a long time, it will take longer.
For Win8, you may need to install the Servicing Stack Update manually to fix a problem with Windows Update search being stuck:

I've got something like WMI Provider on my T450 taking up around like 25% of the CPU too. Is that the same story?
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Don't mean to hijack, but I've just realized something about W10: Windows Defender scans all I/O operations.

That can really put a damper on speeds, and ramp up CPU cycles.

It's not hijacking but thread necromancy--the last post was over a year ago.

Apologies.

It looks like every thread in this sub-forum is from atleast 2 years ago.

Doesn't seem to be much love for Win8 (understandably).

Win8 was a disaster. It was Microsoft trying to get into tablets, but forgetting its desktop and laptop users.
A Start Menu that eats up the entire screen is unacceptable.
