The X201 is a wide screen; 1280x800 or a 16:10 aspect ratio screen. The X61 screen you are talking about is a "normal" 4:3 ratio screen. Both are 12.1" diagonally measured panels, however with the aspect ratio difference, this means that the X201 LCD is shorter (i.e., less tall in the vertical dimension) than the X61's.

In short, the answer is "no", the X61 panel will not fit inside the X201 lid. At least not without some major cutting of the lid. The X61 screen will stick out. I'm guessing about an inch (too lazy to do the geometry right now). Of course this all assumes that the electrical connections are compatible, something I highly doubt.

edit: Here's a screen aspect ratio and dimension calculator: http://www.silisoftware.com/tools/screen.php

Height of 12.1" 16:10 screen is 6.41 inches. 12.1" 4:3 panel is 7.26 inches. 0.85" is the difference so I was off by 0.15" :) .

The height of the X200 lid is exactly the same as the X61 lid.

But nothing about an X200 is compatible with a 12 inch 4:3 screen except the raw physical dimensions of the machine.

A 1440x900 screen from an X200s would make a far better transplant ...

I mean, it is the connector that will not work.

That said, as my signature says I own an X2001 -- which is an X200 AFFS screen installed on an X201 base. The X200 and X201 do use the same connectors (unlike the X60 and the X61).

If I may ask, what are you hoping to achieve from this screen mod?

Looking at the pics, it has a cut-down X201 bottom case, with the right side of an X61 grafted in.
That has to be one of the strangest Frankenpads I've ever seen.

He did the same thing with a X210 board.

I observe that the battery is an X61 battery. In other capture shots from the X210 board version, I saw the audio and usb plugs on he right side lined up, so it must be using the original daughterboard of the X61/X62. The power plug appears both on the left and right side of the laptop, but it appears the correct plug is the one on the left side. I think the only reason the left side of the laptop is replaced with the left side of a X201 is to get ports properly covered. I'd like to see how the screen cable is handled.

I am shocked how similar the X61 and X201 are for this frankenpad to be possible.

X61 batteries have the release slider on the machine while the X201 batteries have it on the battery. There's all the proof you need.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Good eyeballs you guys have.

I'm just looking at the photos I archived of the same frankenpad hack with the X210 board in the X61 and the battery has the mechanism as well.

I also realize now I've been looking at the photo wrong the whole time. I left thinking the zipper part is close to the side with the vent, but it is the opposite side. So, the bottom of the Thinkpad is 95% X210 shell (and the top being 100% X61).

Nice, I'm also suspecting the keyboard connector is identical.

If one were to have a spare X61 AFFS with a dead motherboard and a good X201 motherboard but dead screen.... the marriage of the two would create an ideal Thinkpad. It's not worth buying a X210 board for cramming into a X61. If you are shelling out $$$, makes better sense to buy a better screen for the X201 and modding it to the X210. The Sharp screen is very nice and I understand there are even better 3K screens available that will now work with the X210 motherboard.

Have you posted somewhere about your X60F Core Solo U1300 ?
I've described it in an old post, but have yet to post pictures. Then again, it's a butt-ugly laptop so I'm not too eager.

It's basically an X60s system board with possibly the slowest CPU option (Core Solo U1300, 1.06GHz). It's a leftover of a Frankenpad I sold long ago (X61T L7500 board in X60s chassis).
It lacked a heatsink (used in one of the spare X61Ts).

The X60 chassis is from my aunt. Its lid was badly scratched by the house cat who liked to sleep on it, so I transplanted its system board on a spare X61 chassis I had (whose board died under mysterious circumstances). Her X60 had a history of overheating, so I used the X61 heatsink on it.

So I simply attached the leftover X60 heatsink on the X60s board, then installed it in the X60 chassis. I have enough working batteries for it, so I figured it's worth building.

It's sloooooow. Ran a 7-zip benchmark and the score's a bit lower than a single-core Atom netbook (I have two half-working ones on hand).

It runs cool. It's a challenge to get it to 60c as the U1300 is a 5.5w TDP CPU, while the X60 heatsink is rated for at least 31 watts.

With an SSD it's usable though a bit sluggish, with an HDD it's downright annoying.

It makes a lot of sense. The X60/1 were notoriously bad for overheating in the long-run. So I understand why you are using the solo processor. I thought those few Core Solo units that were only ever produced to satisfy those extra-cheap businesses who want to save a buck and subject their employees on slow machines to save the bottom line. I ended up getting assigned a Core Solo T60 at work when it was time for a laptop refresh. Horribly slow machine. And then one day I got the X131e (for fun) and that re-defined "slow" :) lol Makes the Core Solo appear as a cheetah

I love your mashing all the parts together. I'm the same way. I have a huge drawer of X60, X60s, X61, X61s, X60T, X61T systems that mash together when I need to build a new machine. Mash together the best parts of each particular machine to build a dream machine :)

I got annoyed with the Core Solo and pulled out the X61T L7700 from storage. It has a broken hinge, but I'm hesitant to dismantle it as the pen digitizer is still working.

I don't have a working battery for it, so it's locked down to just 1.2GHz due to the limiter built into the BIOS. The limiter is tripped when using the 65w charger no battery is installed. It's necessary for Thinkpads with normal-voltage CPUs (the Core 2 Duo T series can consume over 50 watts at full tilt) , but IMO it's not needed for the X60s/61s and Tablet models with 17w TDP (and a max of below 30 watts).

Even at 1.2GHz, it feels a lot faster than the X60F due to having two cores. 7-zip benchmark score is around 2200 (as opposed to < 1000 for the Core Solo).

I didn't realize the X61T did limiting based on the adapter used. I know there are settings that can be adjusted in the BIOS, but I didn't know it would limit the CPU based on the power adapter used (that could not be overriden).

My W520 has the limiting but the plug has a notch in it that tells the system if the proper adapter is used.

IIRC, all the mainline models from the T60 generation to the T430 did it. My X220 has an unusual behavior though: Linux somehow ignores the limiter, while Windows abides by it.
