W520 CPU cooling swap
W520 CPU cooling swap
Hi, I just bought my W520, and I decided to upgrade it every possible way.
Everything went good, but I have problem with CPU cooling. I have 04W1576 (45W TDP) unit which works fine, but up to 96*C.
I decided to buy 55W TDP unit, but only one I was able to get right away in Poland was 04W0437.
Ok U might think what's the problem then ?
Well my old unit have bigger base for graphical unit. This bigger base covers nvidia's RAM too.
So my dilemma is, should I run on this 55W unit without cooling for graphics memory, or stay with 45W one, or maybe try to build new option from those two ?
But my biggest question is, was there factory option running on nvidia q1000m or q2000m with 04W0437 cooling unit ?
Maybe video ram don't need that much cooling ?

In my opinion best way might be to switch fans, and put one from 55W in 45W unit.
Or switch nvidia base, and put 45W on 55W unit.
And I'm still looking for one of those 04W1574, 04W1575 55W units. Which looks like mine 45W. And in my opinion has better heat pipes set too.
Please advise me.

I would suggest you to stay with your current 45W heatsink assembly, considering that it covers the graphics chip and its VRAM chips. If I were you, I would not want to run the risk of operating the VRAM at a higher temperature.
For the W520's configurations that came with a Quadro 2000M, yes. For those that came with a Quadro 1000M, probably not.
Probably, but for such a high-end configuration? I doubt that it is worth the risk.
According to the pictures that you have posted, I don't get the idea of transferring that 5V 0.23A Panasonic fan (UDQFLZR22FFD) to your 45W heatsink assembly. Your 45W heatsink assembly appears to have a 5V 0.4A Delta fan (KSB06105HA), which I believe, is more powerful than the 55W heatsink assembly's Panasonic fan.
The other 55W heatsink assemblies (FRU 04W1574, 04W1575), seems to be identical with your current 45W heatsink assembly. I did not notice a difference with their heatpipe configuration. The fan also seems to be the very same Delta KSB06105HA.

But again I thing those 3 heat pipes together will work worst than 2+1 configuration.

That heat sink is the one factory equipped in my W520, with Quadro 2000M and i7-2860QM. Note however it will still reach 96 degrees and go into throttling, if it's worked appropriately hard enough.
It is of the 55W 04W1574 heat sink. Given the images of your 04W0437, it sounds like this one may be better suited to your needs.

That's interesting, I have the same CPU/GPU configuration and the seems that the same temperatures on officially 45W TDP.
I have 96's during renders in 3d Studio etc. So I thing there is no real difference between 45 and 55 W heatsink.
Maybe when Intel introduced 55W CPU's, they tested old cooling solution and it did work good enough, so they add new item just to show that, yes they have option for that too.
And by the way earn more money when people will swap CPU later, or chose higher option.
I will try to recognize differences in fan's if there is any.

There have been a few discussions over the last few years about the differences in these heat sinks/fans and in general the consensus has been "nobody knows" what the differences are.
Based on what you've got it sounds like the difference may in fact be just the fan. I've read before (I believe in the thread I linked) that the Delta fan is superior, which would align with the thought that the 55W heat sink is only such because of a stronger fan, with the same heatpipe design, compared to the 45W sibling.

Ok maybe I will buy this 04W1574 and make few tests to settle this once and for all.
What tests you propose ?
Will I need something more, I have thermal grease tg5 of course
, but I mean thermal pads maybe ? If so what size ?

Basic tests I would run include using the various heat sinks, then pulling up TPFanControl and setting fan 64 (max fixed) and monitor temperature of CPU and GPU and running furmark to load the GPU, and Prime95 to load the CPU. Then use CPU-Z to monitor CPU clock speed after temperatures stabilize.
One would conclude the heat sink that allows the highest clock speed/lowest temperatures is the best.
Here is some testing I did a few years ago, which we can use as comparison possibly?

Before AS5 application, I loaded 8 threads of Prime95 for small FFT testing (maximum heat). After a short time the CPU temperatures stabilized at 80C, with CPU-Z reporting the clock at 2.5 GHz, occasionally jumping to 2.6 GHz. TPFC fan speed was 64 (maximum) at roughly 4700 RPM. To load the GPU after this, I loaded FurMark. After five minutes the temperatures stabilized with the GPU at 89C (or 75C as reported by FurMark) and the CPU up at 96C, although the CPU had throttled back to 2.4 GHz, occasionally dropping to 2.3 GHz.
After the AS5 application, I repeated the same series of tests. 8 Prime95 threads for small FFT tests had the CPU stabilize at 72C - with the fan running at level 7 (3800 RPM) AND the clock rate was 2.6 GHz, occasionally dropping to 2.5 GHz. Five minutes after loading FurMark, the GPU ramped up to and stabilized at 91C (or 77C as reported by FurMark), although the CPU only reached a peak of 87 at a steady 2.5 GHz. Quite an improvement (at least in CPU temps)!!!
Single-threaded FurMark GPU torture
Five minutes after unloading the CPU of the Prime95 torture (only FurMark running), the CPU was mostly 3.3 GHz, occasionally jumping to 3.5 or peaking at 3.6, regardless of pre or post application. Temps before application were CPU - 81C, GPU - 71, after application CPU - 73C and GPU - 72.
Conclusions
Overall, the GPU temperatures didn't change enough to warrant any claim that the AS5 paste reapplication improved or worsened its temperatures. The reapplication of AS5 to the CPU, however, showed impressive results in both temperature and throttling. The multi-threaded tests ran 8C cooler while at a lower fan speed setting AND a higher clock frequency. Multi-threaded tests with a loaded GPU allowed the CPU to run 9C cooler without throttling back to less than full clock speed.

That's interesting already, my CPU newer drops lower than 2,6GHz and goes up to 4,6GHz on single thread loads. I cant wait to do more tests.
