what SSD do you run?
what SSD do you run?
If your running an SSD in your thinkpad what brand and size do you run? I got an awesome deal on some server SSD's awhile back but want to know what you run if any... I'm trying to decide on what I should order (I missed the good deal on Samsung 860 Evo 500GB)

Re: what SSD do you run?
I have a Samsung EVO 850 500GB in my T520 and an EVO 850 250 GB in my T500.
Both run like tops. The drive in the T520 is nearing three years old, and the drive in the T500 is about 9 months.

Re: what SSD do you run?
I was thinking about going on eBay and finding a used 1TB server ssd for around $100 for the gaming Thinkpad as I only have 100GB left on my 500GB HDD... I wanted to wait for 1TB Samsung drives to hit about $100 new but it hasn't happened yet and I need the space... it's the reason not all my machines have SSD's yet.. I might have to wait on getting a new drive as they are still like around $150 for 1TB SSD... too expensive for me..

Re: what SSD do you run?
Ah, I think I will be flamed hard for this, but I just bought the cheapest ones from China (because why not ッ - I have an online backup system if it comes to it).Whitieiii wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 7:00 pmIf your running an SSD in your thinkpad what brand and size do you run? [I can update with exact part numbers at some other time if someone really wants to know, either just comment here or PM me.]
My x250 has a Kingspec m.2240 1TB, and a Colorful SSD 960GB. I'm considering either the Kingspec m.22 2240 256GB or 512GB or the Toshiba 256GB m.2 2240 for the 3rd drive, but I have yet some time to decide because I need to get the FHD screen replaced first (cracked it like an idiot).
My x61 - I valued it for space, so I got the SSHD Seagate FireCuda 2TB.
My x2001 - I just put my old 1TB HITACHI 7200rpm HDD in it (it was from my old ASUS ROG gaming computer).
Everything else has always used a 5400rpm or slower HDD and enough memory for the OS it runs that disk caching was kept to a minimum.
So that's my story. I wonder about others here?

Re: what SSD do you run?
When SSD was $400+ I'd worry about type, brand, etc. Now that 120 GB SSD are $30-$50 Cdn on sale locally I don't worry about any of that anymore. Grab the cheapest one. Use and abuse and carry on. 90% of my desktop and laptops are only SATA II so max speed is not an issue. Even turning on and using hibernation on my laptops, I've yet to have a SSD fail on me. One of these days one will. Don't care SSD are cheap and readily available.

Re: what SSD do you run?
I wanted to get a 1tb ssd but they are still too much money for me... 500GB isn't enough for me anymore and I believe if i buy a T460p i will only be able to install one drive in it since the configuration I'm thinking of will have both a wireless card and cellular wwan card in it and with no cd drive I can't stick a hard drive in there so I'll be stuck with a 1tb 7.2k spinning hard drive for awhile... Most all the drives you got are good drives but if i can find a name brand ssd 1tb for $100 or less ill grab it

Re: what SSD do you run?
Yup i know... I'll have to wait for just awhile more.... I don't know if the sshd fits in the T460p's main hard drive bay but I'll check.... I've currently got 100GB left on my T440p's 500gb hdd and the T460p would replace my T440p so I'd need to start with a 1TB sshd drive... I'll see what can be done.. I may just have to go HDD if it come down to itmadicetea wrote:Even the cheap China Colorful brand was like 960RMB which is closer to 150usd -- sorry dude, you'll need to dream for a while yet.
The FireCuda SSHD might be the only thing within that range, and for those, I think you can even get 2TB at right around 100 (before tax), but just remember that SSHD are frauds still to the world of SSD (even if they are decently higher performing than most HDD).

Re: what SSD do you run?
Funny. Here I am recalling how I purchased my first SSD in February 2014. It was a 500GB Evo 840, and at $300 that was a good deal back then. And it wasn't even a very good SSD - some performance issues were discovered (most of which were admittedly resolved, even if it took a while).
Nowadays the new and improved version is sold under $100...

My X220 is sporting a 60GB Kingston mS200 mSATA SSD, which I bought over 3 years ago. These days mSATA is not a cost-effective option for SSDs, so I'm weighing my replacement/upgrade options.

2.5 inch SSDs are that cheap you can just buy a spare as a backup drive or as I have for a smaller data drive.

Re: what SSD do you run?
I use a few with great results, Sandisc 1TB being the latest.
However, this particular one I bought to replace the DVD/Optical using an approved caddy. Everything fits well, but the system (T540P/Win8) does not see the SSD. I've swopped with other smaller SSD's, updated BIOS etc but still unable to sort it. Anyone had similar issues?
Some www solutions for HP laptops are not usable for the T540P...unless I can change SATA IDE settings somewhere in the BIOS.

I have a 120GB Mushkin M.2 SSD in my HP along with a 2TB Seagate platter drive. I'd like to get a 2TB SSD for the main bay of my notebook. Not for the performance, but because a SSD would be more quiet as I only use it for storage. The least expensive new 2TB SSD I've seen is $180, which is too expensive for a storage dive.
I just upgraded my desktop to a 1TB Sandisk SSD. I always said if I cold find a 1TB SSD under $100, I'd upgrade and I did. I used to keep my files on an external platter drive. It liked to hang sometimes when clicking on a file, so the better latency of the SSD is much appreciated.
My Mac uses a 90GB OCZ Agility III from 2011. My HTPC uses a 120GB OCZ Agility III, also from 2011. Both are humming along well.

Re: what SSD do you run?
We bought a large capacity 2.5" Samsung 850 Pro (with that 10 year warranty) for our X230 & T410.
If/when one day these computers retire (they are running just fine under Win10 !), we can re-use these 2.5" SSD for either data backup, or as a USB recording device for our family TV
We also bought a 1 TB Samsung 850 Pro in a portable external SATA enclosure, as a homemade portable USB 3.0 SSD drive.
It works brilliantly!
[Edit: Samsung 850 Pro uses MLC, hence much more write cycles, hence 10 yr warranty. Most newer SSD nowadays uses TLC or even QLC with (much) shorter write cycles.]
A few months ago in 2019, we also tried to procure that rare 2 TB Samsung 850 Pro 2.5" SSD again for its 10 year warranty, but alas, we missed the chance.
Rare because there was only a very short period of time when 2 TB 850 Pro was introduced, before the 860 Pro series was announced.
If you wanted to catch that narrow timeframe when 2 TB 850 Pro was on clearance sale to make way for 860 Pro, the time window is even shorter!
All of them are now Samsung 860 Pro or above, which comes with only 5 year warranty (which is still "good", we suppose).

Re: what SSD do you run?
Will be running a Crucial MX500 in my T440p. Seems to be the best value right now. Also considered the Samsung 860 Evo, which is considered to be the best. Bit too pricey for me.
Re: what SSD do you run?
X131e is using a Crucial MX500 250GB, flawless.
T61 is using a Crucial M4 256GB 7mm SSD (that's about 6yrs old that SSD, it was in my X230, then in my Elitebook 8470p and now its new home is the T61 Middleton BIOSed)
My Elitebook 8470p uses a 500GB WD Blue 2.5in SATA SSD which is pretty fast for £50.
My Asus G752VT uses an NVMe Samsung 256GB OEM drive, which I might or might not upgrade.
And my GT640 (I couldn't fit all my units in the sig) uses a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB. Still working nicely.
And my little oddity Fizzbook Spin NL2 uses the Sandisk 250GB SSD that my X131e had for a little bit, and it's sluggish and was worse in the X131e.
