X1C6 charging voltage

#1 Post by dandreye » Thu May 23, 2019 4:48 am

Hi All,

Apologies for this simple question: which particular voltage does X1C6 use through USB-C when charging off the standard charger? The USB-C spec tells me there are 2-3 different voltages, in particular 5VDC and 20VDC, hence wondering if a high amp 5VDC charger could be used to charge it.

Many thanks in advance!

Some X1C6 travel chargers I see on Ebay are rated 3.25Amps @ 20VDC. Does that look about right? What I'm trying to figure out is whether I can charge my X1C6 off a USB power outlet I saw in economy class Boeing 777-300 aircraft seats on a London-Tokyo flight recently: can't find any specs of those USB power outlets anywhere for some reason.

w0qj:

Thanks so much. Do you think the X1C6 will charge off 5VDC at least slowly after detecting no other voltage available? The fact the 4X20M26276 has 5VDC besides other voltages gives some hope.. The USB power outlets in question are all Type-A, which tells me 5VDC is the only voltage they can deliver.

1. ***Anyone else with USB-C charging experience can shed light on this X1C6 question?

2. Sorry, we've specifically avoided this USB-C charging thingy.
So no hands on experience with USB-C charging...

3. Notebookcheck.net had a tidbit about your X1C6 (circa 2018) power supply:

www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X ... 682.0.html

"...We were pleasantly surprised at the degree to which the X1 Carbon draws power given that it has an ultra-bright WQHD HDR display. Jumping from minimum to maximum brightness increases power consumption by around 5 W. The idle-max values were around 11.9 W even with keyboard backlighting turned on...

The increased TDP limit noticeably affects energy consumption under load. 52.5 W is needed for the first 28 seconds of our stress tests, after which the energy consumption settles at 43 W. While our test device comes with a more than sufficient 65 W USB-C power supply, the standard one only measures 45 W. The additional 1.19 Euros (~$1.47) for the 65 W version is negligible, and one which we recommend you purchasing."

...in which case I suppose it'd be 15V/3A or (more likely) 20V/2.25A circuit of the 4X20M26276 as the other 2 just wouldn't give enough power. Perhaps the 5V/2A circuit of the 4X20M26276 could be used for other applications such as smartphone/tablet charging. Thank you for digging out this review: I think it implicitly answers the question that 5VDC isn't used by the X1C6.

Charging voltage is indicated on the bottom label, and it is 20V. It will not charge on anything less, especially at 5V.

Thanks for the confirmation: it says 20V 2.25A/3.25A on the rear of my X1C6 indeed, so looks like I'm out of luck.
