Windows 10 Now Require a Minimum of 32GB Storage Space -- April 2019

#1 Post by w0qj » Mon Apr 29, 2019 2:41 pm

As of April 2019: Windows 10 Now Requires a Minimum of 32GB Storage Space on your hard drive or SSD.
www.extremetech.com/extreme/290401-wind ... rage-space

Mainly more HDD/SSD storage space for Win10 upgrades.

This has implications for older ThinkPads, and for those whose HDD/SSD are almost full.

Before I had a copy of x86 Windows 10 running on a 32GB mSATA SSD for a T430u, and it didn't take long before the drive is totally filled, despite installing all apps and data on the HDD. Made the upgrade to a 256GB one and never regretted it (despite the price tag).

You can use empty USB flash drive as a temporary storage for the upgrade.

It seems they will launch the sequel of candy crush any day now with the additional storage requirement

And to think....

My first install of a Windows GUI (Windows for Workgroups 3.11) required all of 8 MEGABYTES

Where will it end??

It won't end, but the hardware upgrading cycle is slowing down at least. Tbh 32GB requirement isn't really a problem for me. My ThinkPad T43 came with 40GB HDD (Being the first ThinkPad that can actually run Windows 10 setup)… I get that the 32GB mSATA users are gonna be in trouble, but they are already in trouble as I have attempted that 2 years ago that ended up with <100MB free space (and lots of wear on the drive as a result)

Man, that takes up nearly all of my 10MB MFM drive!! What will I do now?

(but really I don't see this a problem in a day and age where you can buy a 128gb SSD for 20$ at the local shop)
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Update/Clarification from MS:

www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-10-ma ... 39576.html

"...[Microsoft] clarified that the 32GB requirement is only for new devices from its OEM partners."

ie: Older devices not affected by this new 32 GB minimum of storage space.

[Edit: Just to clarify, MS said this 32GB minimum requirement is aimed at small form factor Win10 devices such as MS Surface, where the device's total storage perhaps maybe 32-64 GB in size only! Guess MS is prodding the OEM makers to increase their storage capacity.]

I just installed Windows 10 Enterprise 64bit on a Dell Precision T3500 tower, including all updates, and then disabled hibernation and ran Cleanmgr /sageset. Excluding the paging file, this install takes up only 9,595,342,848 bytes, or 8.93 GB.

Just to clarify, MS said this 32GB minimum requirement is aimed especially at small form factor Win10 devices such as MS Surface or other similar devices,

One of my clients has two Lenovo N22 mini-laptops with only 32GB SSD/eMMC soldered to the system board-- they're practically Chromebooks with Win 8 bolted on. An in-place Win 10 upgrade is impossible. They have to use external HDDs to shuffle documents in and out because the free space is too small.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Just add a microSDXC card. 512GB ones are now under $100, for example: https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-High-Perfo ... way&sr=8-6

When my (relatively cheap) phone has more space than a laptop...well something is seriously wrong with the laptop. 32GB of storage? I mean my T42p came with twice that from the factory in 2005!

I'm pretty sure that's the equivalent of plugging a punctured gas tank in a car with duct tape and saying it now has enough gas.

It's probably the same as the N22 Chromebook but with Windows shoehorned in. Well, they bought it without consulting me, so that's their problem. :P
