T430 Fan Noise - Need FRU for good replacement

#1 Post by CoolRunnings » Wed Jun 05, 2019 10:21 pm

I'm upgrading a whole bunch of Thinkpad T420 and T430's to Windows 10 and found a number of them with bad or terribly noisy fans. I do recall that there were several FRUs available for the T430 fans and that they fixed the noise issue on one of them. I can't seem to figure out which FRU that is. All of my models are the Intel graphics only ones - not the Nvidia models. Could anybody there hook me up with the FRUs for the good model of fan on the T420 and the T430? Also, I'm in the market if anyone's got them for sale. Thanks!

Well if you like hand work and cheaping out, you can consider lubricating the axle of the fans by disassembling the housing of the heatsink, and then attempt extracting the plastic spinner out of the body and dip oil inside the axle hole. It doesnt hurt since worst comes to worst you get a new fan assembly anyways

Here's some details for T430 only - two fan makes used - Delta and Toshiba. Delta fan and heatsink units are quieter - the heatsink cooling fins are greater spaced so that more air flows at lower fan rpm. Also there are less fan blades and wider gaps between them which also keeps noise down. Toshiba units rev higher and have higher airflow speeds through narrower cooling fins. The dedicated graphics units with an extra heat pipe for the gpu fit fine into the Intel integrated gpu laptops - same gap in the roll cage so you get an extra heat pipe to dissipate heat. Thus, it doesn't matter which you buy for your igpu machines. I replaced a noisy toshiba igpu heatsink and fan with a Delta dedicated unit. There is some debate about whether the toshiba with it's noise and faster airflow cools better than the Delta with it's lower velocity but presumably greater volume flow. Any experts out there? Either way, it you're going to put a quad core cpu into your igpu laptop, install a dedicated graphics cooling unit.

Part Nos for heatsink and fan units: Delta igpu 04W3268, dgpu 04w3270. Toshiba igpu 04w3267, dgpu 04w3269.

You'll find plenty for sale on ebay or amazon; the toshiba units are the most plentiful. Plenty of sellers put up ads with pictures of both sorts and all the part nos without specifying what you'll get. I messaged a few in my hunt for a Delta unit, and most were selling toshiba. Good luck if you are hunting for a Delta.

I have this on my agenda as well to change out a noisy fan. I am curious if you recorded any temperature difference by installing the delta model with the extra heat pipe ? If so, what were the compared readings? Also, what specific model number did you install ? I am curious about the particular details.
Thank You

I bought a delta dedicated gpu heatsink and fan which is part no 04W3270. Here's an ebay link to the exact item - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-IBM-Thi ... SwfjZdCy~D. I got it for a T430 I'd bought which was quite noisy under load and I was mainly looking for quiet - which is what I got. Never really hear the fan working; I'm getting temps from 45C to 70C but I'm not really a power user. I figure the toshiba igpu unit it replaced must be well worn as it was annoying even under light use. I installed tpfancontrol to see if I could get some relief - I set it to not turn on until approaching 60C, which meant more quiet time, but then it would go to max and roar like a jet engine even though I'd set it not to go to maximum revs till over 80C. Now I don't use tpfc at all.
Interestingly, I'm tinkering with another T430 I've just bought which has an igpu toshiba fan and it's quite different - you know it's there most of the time but it's not really noisy. I probably could live with it. Comparing it to the Delta, I think it runs the same temps or even slightly less, and it definitely has faster air flow out the vents. I think the performance guys might use the toshiba dgpu units and live with a bit of noise but you'd have to ask, I can't really say. Hope this helps a bit

@thelash, Thank you. This helps me tremendously. I am not a power user. just wanted to replace the noisy fan with the quietest option and try to keep the temps between 45-65C. Sounds like this one worked for you. much obliged for the link and this info.

PS/Update/Edit for the record.
I have purchased 3 of the fan heatsink units from the ebay seller on the link in post #7. I have had good transactions, fans are super quiet and work great. I have used thermal grizzly kryonaut as recommended by RBS in various posts. Even upgrading to i7-3620QM cpu, temps stay mid 40's to low 50's. And quiet. as of 12/26/19, link still works.
